Very interesting video. That's why I prefer videos of solo travelers. They also show the nightlife. Couples almost never do that. Leblon - nearby - is very cool in the evenings too. And Lapa...

Tbh, not so much anymore because of covid. many establishments struggled to keep open, even though things are opening in rio right now. However, it still is vibrant just not as much as it used to. Hope it goes back to normal soon. There are a few new hotspots though! I highly reccomend visiting "Largo de São Francisco da Prainha" in the Port Zone. Same kind of appeal and just as vibrant as Lapa used to be

Rio safety issues are overly exagerated.
this is a microcosm of Brazil: Dude is in the richest part of town and yet there is black, brown, blond, white people dancin with each other, mixed couples everywere, everybody watching flamengo play. After that rich people will go home and more humble people will go to the favelas wich are beside the rich neighborhood. Tomorrow morning everyone can go to the beach. :)

Nope. Masks just got liberated. You still can wear them if you want to, but covid has been more or less controlled within Rio. Keep in mind that some establishments still ask you to wear, same for public transports and uber/taxis, but the're not madatory on streets nor on bars/restaurants and most shops
They got rid of the face mask mandates. It feels like it's back to normal in my opinion.
What area (barrio) is this?
Gávea neighborhood! Baixo Gávea is an area within Gávea. Many neighborhoods have a "Baixo" area such as Gavea, Botafogo and Leblon. That stands for something like "hotspot" and it indicates areas withing those neighborhood that have got more bars, nightclubs and such
Bairro, no barrio here. Just say neighborhood if you are not sure, at least you won't sound like a schmook.
