One of the most distinctive wolves in the Greater Voyageurs Ecosystem

- We are still trying to unravel a little mystery surrounding the most distinctive looking wolf (at present) in the Greater Voyageurs Ecosystem-or at least, we think he is the most distinctive wolf currently but check out this montage to see if you agree.
Wolf Y1T is the dominant male of the new Blood Moon Pack, which took over the Moonshadow Pack territory this past winter when the Blood Moon Pack was 4 wolves strong.
But we aren’t really sure how this came to be. Before Y1T settled down in this territory, we had several videos of him on various cameras throughout our study area traveling alone during the winter. I.e., he did not have pack mates in tow and appeared to be a lone wolf.
So then, the question, is: where did his other pack mates come from? Are they vestiges of the Moonshadow Pack or from somewhere else?
It is possible that Y1T just usurped the breeding male of the Moonshadow Pack, Wolf V079, who eventually died of starvation last February, and the 3 remaining wolves are V079’s mate and his 2 offspring.
Or, it is possible that the Moonshadow Pack dissolved in early-to-mid winter leaving a vacant territory. Y1T might have opportunistically found another a group of transient wolves and together they took over the territory.
Our only real chance at figuring this out will likely be genetics-in particular, if we can get genetic sample of the female and her offspring.
The Blood Moon Pack did not produce a litter of pups this year (the female clearly was not pregnant) and the two young wolves in the pack appeared to have dispersed in late spring or summer.
Currently, the Blood Moon Pack is just two wolves: Y1T and his mate who have been traveling together for several months. If they remain together this winter, they should produce a litter of pups next spring and we should get some good genetic samples from those pups to perhaps resolve this mystery.
Of course, these are the kind of simple dramas that play out all the time across the Northwoods that are very challenging to understand because observing wolves on a regular basis in these settings just isn’t feasible. Fortunately, we have trail cameras to get a glimpse!

Looks more wolfy than the rest if that makes any sense, beautiful wolf and some great footage as always!
beautiful
I love watching the wolves. Thank you for the videos of them and the other animals that you capture on videos
I hope Y1T & his new mate make it through this Winter & produce a litter of healthy pups next Spring. I know the term Lone Wolf, but he looks pretty strong & could make an excellent pack leader in his area. Thanks for this beautiful video.
I love that my GSD just watched this whole video with me. The look on his face was almost mysterious. Love that dog so much. And I adore and admire wolves 🥰
Wow, the colors on this guy. So nice to see them looking relaxed and healthy.
I like the theory the territory was vacant & Y1T combined with others ♥️🐺 (I’m admitting I’m not a scientist of course) May they thrive!
Beautiful
Hey man my name is Alex and I am new to your channel on RUclips. So I saw some of your video yesterday and include this one today. So I say I love your videos so keep up your work and I will see you in the next video
Wolf love you ❤❤❤
How Interesting! I do hope that the Moon shadow pack lives on truely.
EXCELLENT Video 👍👍
THANK YOU for sharing 🥰
😊
Thank you for this beautiful video. It put a huge smile on my face watching them frolic in the snow at the end of the video.
That is one special wolf!
Very Handsome guy. So much rust instead of gray and black. Hope that he marks his puppies.
Thank you for the beautiful video. GOD BLESS WOLVES FOREVER.
What an absolutely gorgeous boy! I hope he will go on to have some pups with his coloring.
Unfortunately, does he stand out more in the winter?
Also, I am sorry to hear about the loss of the other one. 🥺 We need all of mother nature's creatures, they all have a role to play.
I wish humans would learn that.
Love these videos, thank you!
Amazing. He is beautiful
thanks! these videos help in such an awful time, it makes me calm
I NEED WolfQuest to make a coat of this guy
Real
Thanks for the video.❤
What a beautiful boy he is and he is not keen on the trail cams, wise man, love from Scotland 🏴 ❤
Love that coloring. That little play scene was cool to.
1YT is a gorgeous male… so I hope they have a healthy liter with strong genes !
'maybe tomorrow...."
Are those possibly the same pair of wolves, that were seen in the Tamarack territory earlier this year, maybe?
🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
tag or not to tag that is the question. some of the time it would be nice to just let things be as they are.
Love Wolves. #ProtectWildlife
you did splendid -matte. )
Cool Video cool RUclips 👍🏻
I wonder if Y1T is a wolf-dog hybrid. There is a particular case of a group coyotes in Canada who possess fur patterned with gold. The cause of this coloration is attributed to a dominant genetic trait from a Golden Retriever ancestor. It is only speculation, but perhaps Y1T is the same.
Are those coyotes you speak of in Newfoundland? Because I've heard of a line of pale cream coyotes who descend from a Golden Retriever gone wild from there, the locals call 'em Snow Coyotes.
@@emilycarrick3570 Yes, those are the ones! Funny how these oddly colored coyotes have gained a mythical reputation.
It's possible, considering high content wolfdogs can be up to 99% wolf and do not look much like dogs at that point.
However, his coat, while distinctive compared to the other wolves in this area, is still a normal wolf coat. It's possible that the gene has been carried for a while and only now expressed itself in the local population, or it's possible he's from a far away pack and simply dispersed farther than most.
It'd be interesting to see if they can't get a blood sample to test while he's getting tagged.
Incredible
What state is this
🤗🤗🤗💕💕💕
seems to be a loner yes?
i hope you never catch it and put a radio collar on it or tag it's ears
Why? It'd be great for information, and also make the animal less likely to be shot by Hunters.
That’s one of the way they’ll be able to get his genetics or track him, he’s a unique specimen and it’d be beneficial?
I don’t like these people who are all about animals being wild, they ARE still wild even after being collared or tagged, it doesn’t interfere with their life after the initial catching and won’t hurt the population in any shape.
Why wouldn't they? Not only will it help collect data about the species, it's not going to "domesticate" him in any way. Collared animals aren't always pets.
@@woooooooolfy4820 I don't need to dislike you to disagree with you. In my opinion the transmitter boxes are too big and must be a drain on the animals energy levels. If an airtag can be the size of a button why do these transmitor boxes have to be so big? And if they can't be smaller don't use them. Regarding the tags I have a weaker argument and would just prefer only one ear to be tagged - frequently it is two ears and this seems excessive.
@@imbored3416 I do not like them to be interfered with to this extent, the boxes are large, they look cumbersome and uncomfortable. The argument that they may be less likely to be shot by Hunters may be strong, I do not know.
