I have a 2006 civic hybrid 1.3L CVT. When it goes into gear, it has this horrible metallic like sound that gets faster with speed, but when neutral or park, it’s gone. Rick Moises, when these transmissions start to whine most of the time is the metal band. Could be for many reasons, most common reason is final drive is chipped somewhere. If you drained the fluid and didn’t see any chunks of metal yet you could also remove the axles and remove the seals where the axles joint and most likely chunks of metal gear will be present. Once the transmission is whining and not moving is done!! And yes when in park or neutral the noise goes away.

Yeah, this is also called cvt drive belt. It is common to fail, to be honest is a really weak part and i wouldn’t be surprised if ur car has the same problem.
This video does NOT cover the failed CVT drive belt. This is the FLYWHEEL failure. Flywheel failure AND belt failure are both extremely common on these. Flywheel repair = simple. Belt repair = nightmare.
I was driving my car today by the LA Zoo. When taking off from a stop sign I heard a trump and coasted to a stop. I couldn't get the car moving in drive or reverse. The engine would just rev. Is the flywheel problem you had the same symptoms I'm having?
@tearsbeers that is a different issue you have. Honestly maybe you can still salvage your transmission. Most of the time when I get that specific issue I drain and fill the transmission with fresh cvt fluid from Honda along with the little bell looking external filter. About 3.5 quarts if you are doing the filter, 3.1 without filter but I strongly suggest filter. Also check your torque mount. That torque mount is the one in the middle bottom with 2 short 17mm held by a bracket to the transmission to the long single 17mm to the subframe. By doing those two things usually solves that vibration when pulling away from a stop now if you transmission already suffer damage will help it a 90% meaning you will feel a very light vibration but not bad at all.
The one on the driver side need Battery out, fuse box clips off (there is a trans Mount bolt under fuse box you will want a swivel) you will need many extensions and swivels in both 1/2” and 3/8”. I think I also had the air box out that is just 2 10mm. For the passenger side Mount, I did unscrew the egr valve and tilted it slightly, and had to try hard with a low profile bolt with swivel to get at the bolt next to/under it
Don’t forget to jack up under the oil pans slightly where you are changing the part also jack it up to get the bolts to align. For the passenger side you need to remove a 10mm cable and two big bracket bolts for which you will need a deep 1/2” 17mm socket
Al H it did not since the flywheel is a mechanical part. No check engine or any codes at all. The flywheel was just spinning around the transmission shaft.
Hi, LJ if you are only replacing the cvt flywheel you don’t need much clearance I did it with a set of 3 ton jack stands and they were at the 3rd took. That with be between 14 and 16 inches give or take of the floor. The transmission jack I used is pretty low profile and super convenient.
I have a code of p1571 and p1600 and Honda said they don’t see anything about the code and ask if they can check the transmission for some censor. I have ima light on my 2005 hybrid. So do you have any idea what could that be?
Noypi Boy, I think the problem is going to be your hybrid Battery. P1600 is for the IMA battery and the 1571 is for ur motor assist which is in between the engine and the transmission. It makes sense that is giving that code for incorrect torque since the battery is not working properly. I got my money on the battery. Let me know what happens!!
Al H: If you are talking about the 17mm on the transmission up top. Yes you need a long 17mm wrench. You will have to place the 12 point end to the bolt and the other end sticking to the top of engine. you are going to grab another wrench and place the 12 point onto the open end of the wrench so you could have leverage and loosen it up. If not getting any loose instead of the second wrench for leverage grab a jack bar and set onto the open end of the wrench and try to push it loose or hammer the end of the bar. Its hard but doable. Better than dropping the exhaust. Good luck
Did you get any codes before you changed the flywheel? I have the same problem, wont move in any gear but have a p0717 cvt input speed no signal code. Do you think that would keep it from moving at all?
Eduardo Cuellar, my car did not have any codes. Your code is for one of the sensors the transmission has and sometimes they go bad but also when the transmission fluid is too old metal shavings start to build up on those sensors cause they are magnetic, so they will interfere with the signal. Take them out and clean them up, if u see a lot of metal shavings change the transmission fluid and it might work for a while but if the transmission has worn down too much you are gonna have to replace the transmission. In this case I think ur transmission is gonna be toast and not ur flywheel. What I’m saying is my car never gave me a code cause the transmission was working fine and the car didn’t sense a broken flywheel cause that is a mechanical part. Basically the engine was rotating the flywheel but the flange on the flywheel had no teeth therefore not engaging into the transmission shaft. Let me know if you have any more questions.
@@spintheboost8888 just checked the sensor and there were metal shavings on it! Guess it's time for a new trans. Thank you for your input really helped me.
No problem, try cleaning the sensors and drain and refill ur fluid with original Honda cvt transmission fluid, u need 3 quarts and see what happens. The transmission may work for a little while. Don’t try rebuilding this transmission cause it’s expensive, ur better off buying a used one in good condition. Good luck!!
In 2006 the Honda Civic Hybrid started a new body style with updates on the Transmissions 2006 to 2011 Honda Civic Hybrid transmission was way more robust then the 2003 to 2005 flywheel stripping was not a major problem as it was with the earlier generation it is very important to change fluid more frequently and used only OEM Honda CVT transmission fluid
2010 Honda Insight auto transmission need to replace … I need how to remove transmission saying have to remove engine and transmission together but ur is just take down transmission
Fernando Gonzalez, the car would turn on normal, no check engine or any flashing lights on the gears. When changing from park to drive or reverse car wouldn’t move. Felt like when car is in neutral and you press gas but goes nowhere. So turned out to be the flywheel flange that was worn and the transmission shaft was floating around the flange gear. I hope that answers your question.
@@spintheboost8888 ok so this is what my car is doing. The exact thing... No check engine light, starts fine. Added transmission fluid & still nothing. So I guess it's the flywheel. 😩

@ Jay Ochoa. Sorry to hear that. When you drained the transmission fluid did you see any metal shavings or chunks of metal on the drain plug? Did you have check engine light with transmission codes or even flashing gear lights on the dash? How about when the car was on idle? Did you have clunking noises coming from the engine bay? I think I also had the air box out that is just 2 10mm. For the passenger side Mount, I did unscrew the egr valve and tilted it slightly, and had to try hard with a low profile bolt with swivel to get at the bolt next to/under it
Don’t forget to jack up under the oil pans slightly where you are changing the part also jack it up to get the bolts to align. For the passenger side you need to remove a 10mm cable and two big bracket bolts for which you will need a deep 1/2” 17mm socket
Did it throw any codes before the trans was removed?
Al H it did not since the flywheel is a mechanical part. No check engine or any codes at all. The flywheel was just spinning around the transmission shaft.
Hi, how high you need to lift the car from ground in order to fit that transmission jack under?
Hi, LJ if you are only replacing the cvt flywheel you don’t need much clearance I did it with a set of 3 ton jack stands and they were at the 3rd took.
That with be between 14 and 16 inches give or take of the floor.
The transmission jack I used is pretty low profile and super convenient.
I have a code of p1571 and p1600 and Honda said they don’t see anything about the code and ask if they can check the transmission for some censor. I have ima light on my 2005 hybrid. So do you have any idea what could that be?
1600 as to do with the battery in the back
Noypi Boy, I think the problem is going to be your hybrid Battery.
P1600 is for the IMA battery and the 1571 is for ur motor assist which is in between the engine and the transmission.
It makes sense that is giving that code for incorrect torque since the battery is not working properly.
I got my money on the battery. Let me know what happens!!
Any trick to get the bolt under the exhaust without having to drop the cat and exhaust?
Al H: If you are talking about the 17mm on the transmission up top. Yes you need a long 17mm wrench. You will have to place the 12 point end to the bolt and the other end sticking to the top of engine. you are going to grab another wrench and place the 12 point onto the open end of the wrench so you could have leverage and loosen it up. If not getting any loose instead of the second wrench for leverage grab a jack bar and set onto the open end of the wrench and try to push it loose or hammer the end of the bar. Its hard but doable. Better than dropping the exhaust. Good luck
@@spintheboost8888 The sway bar forced me to pull the exhaust. 17 year old bolts were solid rust and i drilled them out. Thanks again!
Al H. I’m glad you were able to get the job done 👍🏽
Did you get any codes before you changed the flywheel? I have the same problem, wont move in any gear but have a p0717 cvt input speed no signal code. Do you think that would keep it from moving at all?
Eduardo Cuellar, What year is your car?
@@spintheboost8888 it's a 2003 civic hybrid cvt trans.
Good luck!!
i have 2007 fit with cvt transmission, when you accelerating, it makes grinding sound. are thats flywheel problem? thanks for the answer
2010 Honda Insight auto transmission need to replace … I need how to remove transmission saying have to remove engine and transmission together but ur is just take down transmission
hello why was the reason you changed the Fly wheel
Fernando Gonzalez, the car would turn on normal, no check engine or any flashing lights on the gears. When changing from park to drive or reverse car wouldn’t move. Felt like when car is in neutral and you press gas but goes nowhere. So turned out to be the flywheel flange that was worn and the transmission shaft was floating around the flange gear. I hope that answers your question.
Thanks yes my car not moving
@@spintheboost8888 ok so this is what my car is doing. The exact thing... No check engine light, starts fine. Added transmission fluid & still nothing. So I guess it's the flywheel. 😩
@@cjayw yes 99 percent sure is going to be your flywheel
I fixed the flywheel and now we’re starting to think it’s the transmission and the flywheel because the flywheel didn’t have teeth but we got one and still isn’t going into drive
All those things come into play. Mine didn’t have anything of the above. I hope you connected everything back together and refilled your transmission fluid as well.
@@spintheboost8888 no bro it’s most definitely the transmission we found out it just got a lot of west but I mean it’s almost has 300,000 miles so I think it’s just likely time
where did you post the tools and part numbers? thanks for the video!
peetre, idk if you read the other comments but I don’t have a part number.
The best way to look it up is typing Honda Civic Hybrid CVT Transmission Flexplate Flywheel 2003 2004 2005 1.3L SZCA
The tools are 19mm 17mm 14mm 12mm 10mm 32mm for axel nut, towers, 1 floor jack and the transmission floor jack.
@@spintheboost8888 thanks!
Was this the manual?
Automatic!!
Did you drain the fluid?
@ Andrew Doig. Yes I did.
Thank you !
You’re welcome
If anyone is interested the Honda part number is : 22100-PZA-000

Aye bro, I need some help with this one
just put mine in the shed 3rd time splines stripped out on the flywheel so i can replace it again
dónde puedo conseguir la pieza
hola donde puedo conseguir ese repuesto por ese precio saludos
Man you live in washington.
I don’t!!
You guys can see
Doggie! Ty
i live in east la anybody know someone that can ghelp me out
What is the part number for that clutch flywheel
Hi l Len, sorry for the late response.
The easiest way is to type in 2003-2005 cvt flywheel/flex plate 1.3L.
Honestly I’ve seen some on eBay but the price is ridiculous anywhere from $200 up to $400
U can find it on Facebook market, Craigslist or offer up.
I got mine for $100
As long as ur car has the 1.3 and the donor car is a 1.3 the flywheel should fit.
Good luck, if you have any other questions let me know.
