- Today, Zach is taking a look at the Yamaha SY-1, a unique synthesizer straight out of the 70's Yamaha organ craze. From the lineage that brought you the all-time great CS-80, the SY-1 is a preset-heavy analog synthesizer that was created and used for lead lines and all kinds of nostalgic tones. Best sounding mono synth ever, along with the SY-2.
The very vocal quality of the filter suggests to me that they use various degrees of a low pass and high pass filter in series on the different presets. This series filter combination is something that I find is neglected on most synths, who chose to only offer low pass filters, or a choice of low pass, band pass, or high pass that are not combinable. They also seem to make ample use of pulse wave sounds instead of just the typical saw, square, and triangle waves available on most synths.
This one sounds like it needs a little love. It shouldn't distort like that. Preventive maintenance is key in old synthesizers. The schematics for it are available online. Great video.
I had one, bought it on a flee market maaaany years ago. Sold it a few years ago, it had real character. Achtertouch too. It could really growl. Sold it too cheap I think. But it was a collector.
selling one in perfect condition.
It's an interesting piece. Always enjoy your synth presentations 🙂
The cheapest way to get an SY-1 is to buy a CSY-1 which is a home organ with a build in SY-1. They are often sold for a fraction of the typical price for an SY-1 and you also get a drum machine and of course the organ voices. Only downside is that it is big and heavy. The worst problem with both of them is that the important circuit boards in the synth are sealed in epoxy resin making them impossible to repair. The "official" reasoning for this was to keep all the parts at the same temperature, but more likely it was to prevent competiting companies to copy Yamaha's designs. I bought an SY-1 for a very low price but found the envelope generator to be defective. I had to construct a new envelope generator from scratch to save the synth.
Great sound and explanation!
Love the croaky character. This is an untapped acid beast I just know it.
Ordered and delivered, thank you and well done! By the way, if you wanna know about prices, a good way is to check ebay for ended auctions, so you really see what they went for. Did that and saw prices like 800 to 1000 Euro. They were a lot cheaper just 2,3 years ago, usually around 400. About the sold units i couldn't find information either. Just as a perspective, The CS-50 which of couse was a lot more expensive and came later was like 2.000 units; this is lowest of the CSs I could find infos. The SY could have been more actually, cause more consumer friendly and a bit cheaper - let's not forget the Electone market in the 70s was pretty hip and they integrated the SY-1 in some of their most expensive ones (below the GX that is). I must say I'm pretty amazed by its sound. It has something dry and raw to it and the growl is pretty good. I also like the filter pretty much, sounds like they have more going on than just a low pass. Anyway, with that thing as limited it is, you could make sounds the Minimoog wouldn't have been capable to do. Excited to listen to its competitors.
Your videos are so technic and cool to watch, love them!!!!!!!!!!
Consistent quality is second nature for this guy.
heard this in so many afro-boogie records...thanks for demonstration
Bassline heaven!
To me, that filter sounds pretty different than my other Yamahas (cs10, cs20m, sk50d.) Seems it wants to get growly.
this is my favorite youtube channel so pls dont stop lol
I have an electone (D65/405) and personally id love to sit one of these on top, its like a little baby version!
Good job. LOVED this instrument!
I personally would even re-think to get it as a gift how much if i find the use for it, for my needs of course.
Love all you videos but This video is truly missing where the sy-1 shines, drenched in reverb or phaser. It can produce beautiful kitaro type soundtracks. Easy for me to say, but please follow up with a video showcasing the ambient side.
Will explore further!
I have read that the SY-1 use the same “potted” (epoxy-encased) modules (VCO, VCF, EGs, etc.) as the GX-1.
ive used everything since 1978 but i cant remember using this and I can only relate to cs5. nice video
Closed Captions: Wooow, woooww, wooooowww wooooowwww, bmmm, bmmm, bmmm...
It looks like it borrows from the ARP Pro Soloist which had aftertouch, and came out in 1972 or 73.
Have two, wouldn’t sell them. You can also wiggle the keys, side to side for tremolo.
Paid $200 and $175 for mine.
great presentation but you forgot to mention the stringking arp solina and of coarse the Logan I happen to have this Yamaha and the filter is the best thing it has
Please sy1, sh1000, 700s comparison video!!!!
Had 1 in the mid 80s and wired it up to a set of bass pedals
Yes a growler twanger and would have been a lot better then my Orange Farfisha 4 voice combo organ. Lol
I'm gonna get one and run it through a hologram microcosm with some tr-77 beats later
That might cost a fortune now
