The only time I ever felt togetherness in iskcon was during really rousing kirtan. The rest of the time I was felt very alone. Relationships with other devotees were at best superficial and benign, at worst bullying & traumatic. Iskcon is a very disfunctional society. The sexism, misogyny and homophobia are vile. Twenty years after getting out I still sometimes wonder whatever was I thinking? The best thing I ever did was leave, at age 31, after 9 years in. Thank you for your thoughts. I agree. 🙏

Most people were never meant to JOIN the hare krsnas, ie reject their current situation and take up residence in temples , change their appearance and so on.. Even in the introduction of Bhagavad gita ,Prabhupada quotes lord Caitanya saying don't change your material situation just stay where you are and add Krsna to your life.THATS IN THE INTRODUCTION. If its a spiritual practice how can your material situation be relevant.?
Fact is most of these people wanted to run off and 'join the circus ' and thats what they got. ie there was a lack of sincerity and just a hope against hope if i don the robes all my doubts will dissappear and i'll be on cloud 9. It doesn't work like that , God isn't stupid he looks at your heart and your motivation. (and yes the organisation did encourage you to do that )
I say this as a person who lived in x 3 different temples in the late 90s and yes it was very hard to 'catch up' when i left and i would agree there are definitely culty aspects to living in a temple environment and some culty characters ,largely thats why i left. (though this is changing)
For some reason the organisation at times hasn't allowed individuals to progress from where they're at, in one sense you weren't allowed to be yourself , even though it's all about self realization !! Thats the irony and i think where the cultism arises.
My advise is trust your heart , read the books and don't get swayed by the crowd, if you find yourself loosing touch with your current reality you could be doing something wrong.

Again, majority of the people simply pray to the Lord to Krishna, and go to Temple for service, and to meet fellow devotee and have a good time. No one‘s telling you to permanently live there and give up everything. Also, I’ve never heard of anyone couldn’t be themselves, I mean, how would they stop me from saying what I want to say. Obviously I wouldn’t go to a temple and say anything against God, but other than that, it’s pretty casual.

According to the Vedic scriptures, Krishna is God. And to believe and have faith in God, you need not join any cult or society. The essential thing is to understand the Bhagavad-gita with scientific mind, and have faith in Krishna. If you're reading Bhagavad-gita As It Is, you're already connecting with guru (spiritual master) and Krishna (God). Having faith in God, chanting his holy names, and avoiding meat and intoxications, that is how one becomes a Hare Krishna devotee. It is as simple as that. Your physical appearance need not change. Your heart and mind should change.

A more accurate title would be what is so bad about Krishna Cultism. I am a Hare Krishna and you know that the views that I have are loving and not bad. Please reflect this in future videos to help make people aware that there are actual loving versions of the Hare Krishna practice that are not of the type you are talking about here. WE EXIST but are few in number.
The actual practice leads to amazing happiness and you actually experience the blissful results of feeling actual affection for The Goddess, God and others. You do experience your eternal form and personality and you actually focus on making the world a better place while doing so.
Even IF you do not accept that there is a Goddess or God we still value others far more in fact than is ever possible in a strictly secular way. In my practice we actually do value others far more and put that into action in our lives.
It does make one's life better IF a person actually practices the real thing independent of the culty traditions.
I and others I know are in the process of writing new scriptures as we speak.
Its very sad for me to see Hare Krishna bunched in with Krishna Cultism as if they are the same thing.
They are not even close to being the same thing.
We also do not base our views or practice on what is found in books or commentaries (although we can take inspiration from them in certain specific aspects, our practice and views are not based on them)
Hare Krishna is NOT the same as Krishna Cultism, and we are also NOT a branch off the Krishna Cult practice either.
We exist, we are here and we are all unique individuals with our own very uplifting stories that can inspire many people.
I look forward to our interview so that I can speak about this on your channel.
    THERE IS ANOTHER WAY.
Formfulism, Hare Krishna (the non-cult versions) and Dynamic Theism are things unto themselves that are very uplifting, valuable and tangible in terms of real results in both aspects of life both secular and eternal. If someone does not believe in the eternal stuff, so what? We are also very loving people in secular terms also.

I totally disagree! I think the Hare Krishna religion is harmful in and of itself independent of any cult organization.
That being said I'm not going to go out of my way to make the distinction because there are a few people in the world who practice the religion in ways that are less harmful.
I actually believe that religious progressives share some of the responsibility for the bad things that regressive religious people do, because they legitimize the practice of religion. That was something that was said by Dawkins and while I'm not a big fan I think he got that right.

@@GauraRader Well it will be important to clarify exactly what aspects of the non-cult versions of the practice you think are "harmful" in a way that you can prove and actually verify. You can also use me as an example if you want regarding in what exact ways you think I have personally been "harmed" by it.
From my personal experience I have not been harmed by my practice at all. So that is an assumption you have that is just simply not true and I can disprove that assumption very easily also.
I have not even actually explained my practice to you fully yet either. Which is precisely why I would like to do a one on one chat with you first then we can do a public one also.
Let's talk over video and Facebook/phone some more first to come to some common ground before we do our public talk. It will also help both of our channels if we do and open more discussion between devotees and more "secular" minded people. This is what we need more of, open discussions, finding points of agreement. Debate is kind of redundant, no matter how good each of our points are. People tend to stay with the views they already have either way, "secular" or "theistic" for lack of any better terms.
Although I do not like referring to individuals according to either term personally.

    • @TheLustyDoll
      @TheLustyDoll 3 года назад +2

@@GauraRader I can easily have a "debate" and I have no problem with that at all. My foundation is solid in both rationality and in actual affection for other people. I can easily do that.
You would not be able to "expose" anything harmful about my practice in terms of how it supposedly "harms" me.
Others might see my practice as harmful, but that is just their opinion, or simply not agree with me, but I am not actually harmed by it personally. Quite the opposite. Many people have been greatly helped by the stuff I have shared with them to their benefit.
But honestly there is really no need to debate at all brother. Its better to just have a discussion where we actually focus on points of agreement. That will get us alot further than debating ever could.
You and I both know that most people tend to have confirmation bias anyway. It really makes very little difference how solid our points are either way.
Discussions focused on points of agreement tend to bring people closer, however debates tend to drive people apart unnecessarily. It really makes little difference what the actual points are when it come to this fact form what I have seen. The effect of people being driven further apart is not worth it in my opinion.

The daily rules are really touch. But the truth is now we are more aware, conscious towards our actions in our life and towards the whole society. Another uncomfortable thing is that they advertise and advocate only their publications of Vedanta philosophy as correct, rest are not, one should read only prabhupadas books others are incorrect. Like being in a hospital, one shouldn't be surprised to see people in a diseased condition. Doctors will do what they can, but eventually, no one escapes some discomfort and eventual death. Most people want to make some adjustment in this world, to solve their problems, but the problem is having a material body with selfish desires that keeps one in the cycle of birth and death. Fantastic video. You are very empathetic for the rest of the Hare Krishnas and ex-devotees. It is nice to see that you care about making the world a better place. You are sharing information on the religion which is very informative, and hopefully the people that watch this will learn a thing or two before the consider joining, or hopefully they find some solace if they've left the community.
I agree that capitalism as we know it has a lot of downsides to it, people struggle with mental health problems and financial difficulties, employment etc - and that religion is not necessarily a solution that will make the world a better place. It may not answer the most existential questions people have in life, and for seekers of truth - they may end up believing in things just because someone fed it to them in with a spoon and they were treated nicely by the other person.
I guess Hare Krishnas dissociate from the word "religion" when they preach on the street and in their lounges and temple, its propably why the Krishna's like to call their religion a science. But its not science. Its not peer reviewed. Its not empirical. Its theories are unfalsifiable, and there's no scientific research which proves their validity. At many times, they are anti-science, and indeed pseudoscience, and furtheremore, believing in conspiracy theories that the scientists around them are evil atheistic materialists.
Hopefully people can be more rational in their beliefs and not so arrogant, forceful, culty, pushy, deceptive, and superstitious. Therapy is so important in this day and age, counselling, group therapy, self-healing, introspection, philosophy, vulnerability, empathy, intimacy. And yes, unfortunately people have to turn to a cult to find this, even though it only resembles true community. Yes, Kirtans and Vegetarian Cuisine is great, singing dancing, spreading positivity, but there is a dark-side to this spiritual façade. There are child abusing and rapist gurus, misogynists, spiritual bypassing, sectarianism, forceful preaching, denialism, covering up crimes, gaslighting, manipulating, narcissism, love-bombing. I mean I'm sure its just as crazy as every other religion out there. Scientology, The Catholic Church, Wahhabi Islam.
I definitely think that the regressive ideas of spreading misogyny should be done with, and its unfortunate that a lot of the women in their groups have internalised misogny. I mean who in their right mind would justify this statement, or try to play contextual word games to reinterpret what Prabhupad said? Take this literally, because that's what it means.
"“In this regard, the word vikhyātam is very significant. A man is always famous for his aggression toward a beautiful woman, and such aggression is sometimes considered rape. Although rape is not legally allowed, it is a fact that a woman likes a man who is very expert at rape.” (SB 4.25.41)"
No thanks. We don't need this. Swipe left, block and delete.

Sure, coping and calling out to God is fine, but does not anbd should not equivocate into the realm of real world issues. Religions train people to be delusional to cvarying degrees, and in my opinion, the sooner we let go of this first attempt at humans to explain the world, the better.

At the heart of addiction is trauma. How is a Hare Krishna therapist supposed to help a fellow member if they can’t acknowledge the basic fact that joining the organization that they are both a part of is central to understanding their trauma and that leaving that organization is the only way to begin to fully heal.

I am really appreciating these videos . I met the Hare Khrisnas when I was 18 in 1978 . I used to love being in the temple , I still love kirtan and prasadam . I always knew I would not join as I did not see it as a feasible life for me . As I used to tell the devotees , attachement to loved ones is what makes me happy so why would I want to give it up ? I also always disliked the segregation between men and women and that little matter of being subservient to your husband was always outrageous . I remember reading the bit about women needing to be protected because they were not as intelligent and could go astray and I was told , well that was written years ago and women and men’s souls are the same , so I just got a body that is not as valuable in this life ? There were never any real answers . I continued to visit over the years with my young children who lived the Sunday feast and because I had made friends who were kind and welcoming . Then all the sex abuse info , at the manor came out , suddenly we had the internet and more access to information and I could not justify it anymore as a practice that I would not adhere to but that it was harmless . My interest in religion I realised was very much more focused on the anthropology side of it than the spiritual side of it . What I enjoy is connecting with people , and I think there were very few deep organic friendships if I was never going to join . I still love the chanting , I would still love to be in the middle of a kirtan , so basically I still only like the 2 things that first attracted me to it . The stories of the friends that I had made there , are not happy ones , especially the ones that are related to people who got married whilst they were devotees .

Well, people say they want God of course, but there’s no reason to thank God exists so what we do as psychologist is understand the underlying motivations of someone who says they want God. Another way of phrasing that is, what are peoplewho join religions and cults missing from their life that causes them to join such organizations. And of course, with any human phenomenon, the answer is always multifactorial. We know that religion fulfills some basic needs like the need for community and need to manage existential terror.

One's life should be focused on seeking a higher purpose instead of entertaining own body. The more you seek pleasure in the illusion world, more the suffering it causes. One reason people come out of spirituality is they can't forget their material pleasures. Supreme can be realized only when someone detaches from everything. Two pleasures most people fall into are, 1. taste- People put almost everything they find in their mouth because of taste. When the food crosses the tongue, there is no taste. everything becomes the same. Tongue here is an illusion. Natura wants you to eat more so you can expand and grow, The Next pleasure world after is sex, a man spends his entire life chasing after women and spends his entire life focused and building a family. sex and the associated organs are an illusion here. In this context, nature wanted us to increase in numbers. Ultimately nature wanted us to do two things, grow, expand, and increase in numbers. Spirituality is not for everyone. Only a highly evolved soul through various births can disconnect from material pleasures and devote itself entirely to the divine.
Apart from that, there is balance in nature so good and bad people always coexist each other. It does matter hare Krishna or the minister of the so-called parliament.
The real problem is that we do not know what real surrender means. What is after all yours, your material possessions, definitely not, then what is yours, it's simply your mind. Giving your mind to the master or the hare Krishna is real devotion and real surrender. Once again it is not for everyone.

Dear friend, you have not even understood the basics like body, soul, God, happiness, life, incarnation and the like. And you started to concoct your own definitions of happiness and all the rest. Your definitions are are widely prevailing in the society which is suffering in and out due to false conceptions bass on petty material whims and fancies. I am a working person, I earn and I am a very active ISKCoON member. Please wake up to the reality of life and you will find absolute bliss and happiness which is missing in today's society due to the misconception about life and the essential components that make life happy. I invite you to one of the ISKCON centers to live there and learn about life and happiness.
My initiated name is Damodar Das from ISKCON Jagannath temple Sheshadripuram, Bangalore.

Illuminate me this: if the Hare Krishna religion isn’t a cult then give me some examples of cults and explain why those organizations are cult and Iskcon is not.

So you left the cult behind so you could be a socialist communist leftist. So now you're a happy camper?

Not quite. As I matured I gradually jettisoned irrational beliefs and gradually aligned my core metaphysical, epistemological and moral beliefs with objective rational principles :)

would you say most of the people in Nazi Germany were good people but got caught up in a cult ?

    • @GauraRader
      @GauraRader  Месяц назад

I think that's a tricky question. Most of them, by definition, were averagish humans, which means normal people are capable of great evil. There's a sense in which the people of Nazi Germany who supported Nazism were quite normal humans but also quite evil. So, normal people are capable of great evil. We see that now as well with virtually everyone in the developed world. Despite having various privilidges we do almost nothing about the horrific levels of deprivatio around us. Very few of us donate any significant amount of money or volunteer significant amount of time to help fix things. We as humans are very influenced by social norms and prevailing behavior standards of groups we are a part of, which is why cults focus on brining people into the group rather than winning people over through logical debate. Anyhow, from a moral philosophical perspective, the clearest thing we can say is that their actions were wrong.

Thank you. I am wondering if you have checked deeply the religion of Al Islam, ALLAH and His Glorious Names including His 99 names, our Beloved Prophet Muhammad's Character (peace and blessings be upon Him). I've got to say you shall be fascinated (for real hoping that you reaally do study it deeply, morally and wholesomely 💖🌸💐)

The most impersonal materialistic power-monging culture that I've ever experienced.

they are extroidinary narcisstic and dictators. Mine is my grandfather who is my only parent right now he will NOT let me eat meat. Put your bias aside for a second I am a *GROWING* girl, there is no data to support vegetarian/veganism is very good for *growing* teens and also he does not want to share his food with me anyway, and I have to provide for myself, so I am extremely poor, and when I do get my hands on some meat it is so difficult to eat it because he makes fun of me, looks down on me etc, when I try to get sleep he wakes me up screaming at me about something I did not do, I do my best but it isn't good enough I think I am going to end myself at this point right before my 18th birthday cus I can't take it anymore.
The two basic things I've needed throughout my childhood was food and sleep and I get neither of those, all because of the narcissism and dictatorship. I get it, it is his house, but I think I am going to get diabetes or a serious health illness at this point, so maybe I should just cut the head off of the chicken (myself) and call it a day.

No point writing comments, you are screening and retaining the comments that suit your ugly and false views about Hare Krishna. Iwrote a comment and it was not included in the list of comments. Come clean, come face to face with our senior devotees and sanyasis. They will help correct your misconceptions about life, soul, God, happpiness and society. For more contact me personally. I am Damodar Das from ISSKCON Jagannath temple, Bangalore.

I don't screen or delete comments. I think YT does that automatically sometimes. I am happy to have a conversation or debate with any senior devotee or sanyasi. I'm easy to find and get in touch with. So far no one has sought me out for a debate or conversation and every senior devotee or sanyasi I've tried to engage with has had no interest in genuine conversation about anything of these issues.
