I have floaters only, and started getting them in my mid 20s. Just a small amount and very small floaters. No flashes of light. I’m 64 now, and have been getting annual eye exams. I only see floaters or notice them when I look at a solid white or light color wall or look up at the sky. My doctor basically is monitoring and told me to let her know if I start seeing flashes of light. Though many have this due to aging, healthy foods also plays a role in good eye health. The American diet including chemicals and pesticides in the water and air plays a part in our health.

I had a detachment in my early 40’s. If you see flashes get to the eye doc ASAP as this is a very serious issue. I went right away, had buckle surgery, and fortunately did not lose my vision. That was 19 years ago.

      @scr347 Месяц назад +6

I agree!! Always go ASAP if you see a flash.
I had a "flash" during covid and thought it was just a migraine aura. Had a grey haze in my eye for 7 days and finally called the eye doctor. They told me to "come in NOW" and 30 minutes later I was having laser surgery for a "significant" retinal tear. Everything turned out OK but I still have lots of floaters and a grey have in that eye.

When I had peripheral flashes that started suddenly, my local eye doctor treated it like an emergency and fit me into one of the first appointments of the day. You can get them treated, the fluid in your eye can be flushed out and replaced with a clear, saline solution. There are some who also use the laser procedure to zap the floaters. Both options are expensive, not part of standard healthcare.

A very important issue. One day I had an unusual (to me) number of floaters so I contacted my eye doctor (an optometrist). He examined my eye and said everything is fine and this just happens when you get older. I was in my early 50s.. Several years later, my vision got very strange, where straight lines looked like curves to me. Went to Duke Eye Center where they determined I had had a retina detachment when I had all those floaters. I had to have a vitrectomy to remove scar tissue from my retina. Not fun. My vision in that eye has never been good ever since.

Being a diabetic I see an ophthalmologist 3 times a year. He examined my eyes and found I do not have a detached retina. I had flashes and floaters for about a year. My doctor monitors me and reassured me it would go away. It did go away and I have no other symptoms. I am grateful to my doctor for such good care. I enjoy you both and look forward to more videos. I can instantly see them looking at a plain coloured wall etc. I have a game where I try to fix on one and follow it around. Damn critter always escapes. I've also has flashes a year ago when looking sharp left or right (keeping the head still), they've not repeated thankfully, yet. New to my list is a dry right eye, particularly noticeable when ready for bed and the first few minutes when waking up in the morning - it goes away during the day. Eye doc says "it's your age" and I told her "I'm hearing that more and more!". I'll not bore you with the rest of 'the list'. Getting old is 'fun'.

For about 9 months now I've had a large floater that is attached to my retina directly in my field of vision. My work is 100% on the computer and it's really become a struggle to read the monitor. I had a retinal scan at the optometrist and it confirmed the attachment to the retina but no signs of retinal damage. I was referred to ophthalmology but the soonest they could see me was summer 2025! I'm reassured by this video but it's also a bummer to hear that nothing can be done.

Hold it right there! I had cataract surgery in 2017 and a proliferation of floaters by 2018. I was referred to a retina care specialist in Or. because they don't do this procedure here in Ca. The first thing he found was a torn retina, and he laser sutured it right there in the chair. It had to heal for a month(?) and I scheduled an app. to return for a vitrectomy, a procedure to suction out the vitreous and replace it with saline. I'm 72 and weld almost daily. Any opthalmologist should have this information, perhaps a brochure. Very short out-patient surgery, one eye at a time like the cataracts. Thanks Docs.

Got a question non-related to this topic. This is regarding vascular disease. A few weeks ago I had to have an Angioplasty done for right ilio femoral artery. In 2019 I had surgery done, right ilio femoral bypass graft done. The Angioplasty was done just above the graft and a stent was also placed. I had a horrible time trying to understand all the procedure. My surgeon went in through the left elbow to the right iliac artery. What I was scared of and not understanding was how can they get there from the left elbow? I thought that he’d have to go through the heart itself. That freaked me out. I cannot find any written or RUclips videos to explain it. Everything I found went from either the wrist or elbow to the heart to place the stent. Something I didn’t expect during the procedure was that when the balloon was expanded, it actually hurt. Pain meds helped. Otherwise never felt a thing. Surgeon is hoping that this will help with cutting down pain in right calf as blockage in femoral artery is about 75% or so. I must say that so far feet are a bit warmer. Let’s hope I don’t have to go through major surgery. Thanks very much for info you always give us and I really hope one of your colleagues can explain this procedure to help others. 😊

I cured my floaters by eating a medium raw carrot per day. The floaters were so bad at one stage, it was really annoying. Anyway, I was looking around youtube and came across a nutrition channel, and there was a segment about floaters and the recommendation of eating a medium raw carrot a day. I was at the stage where I had to try anything, so I did, and to my surprise, it actually worked. My floaters disappeared and when I do stop eating the raw carrot, the floaters do come back. I told a friend about it and she tried it and it worked for her also.

Someone once said look at the foods that help us, if you look at a slice of carrot, it looks like an eye and other things like a half of walnut piece looks like a brain and sure enough, it has healthy fats good for our brain. Heard pineapple is also good for eliminating floaters but it supposed to be the nutrients in the core more than the pineapple meat but both probably effective.

I'm 65 and I had one in each eye. The first one happened a few years ago and I'd call that one an "unfriendly" detachment that I induced by hitting my head. The other was a "friendly" one that happened naturally when I was sitting on the couch. The first time I has a lot of flashes and a great deal of floaters, some of which was blood, and the infamous weiss ring floater. The more recent one occurred just a few weeks ago, involved a minor circular flash from 9 to 12 o'clock for just a few minutes. Just a couple of floaters including the weiss ring. I knew what it was so I did not panic. Both times my eye Dr. got me in the next day. Most Drs. take it very seriously until they rule out a retina tear. Light duty for a few weeks after. I'm told that catarac surgery will make floaters more noticeable.

You have given sound advice but let me just emphasize that I am one cheap bastard but that eye checkup was the best healthcare money I've spent this last year (sorry, you all are Canadian, I'm American, everything healthcare related here is f'ing expensive).
Edit: It's one thing to have a YT video say "it's normal", it's entirely different to have a doctor do all the tests and say "yes, your case is pretty typical for your age, don't worry about it"

Government health insurance doesn’t cover eye doctor appointments unless your below a set age or above a set ago.
If your on a provisional disability it is mostly if at all is only covered is you have a health condition that affects the eyes other wise it’s not and you pay for it.
Government health insurance covers family doctors visits, hospital visits, a lot of tests but not all, and specialists but you wait a long time to see them.
It is nowhere near what a lot of people think. If you need an ambulance to the hospital you pay, you need crutches you pay or rent, again some tests you pay -some bloodwork for genetic tests, allergies, some gluten intolerance test and Morse I don’t know of.
You have to have some form of health insurance to cover some it not all of medications, dental, eye doctor, counseling, and more.
Google it pick a province and check what is covered on their Heal Insurance Plan.

@@kandymich4861in Canada there are some other cases where eye care is covered, or partly covered, where eye disease already exists or visually correction is at the extremes.
This still doesn't help with getting timely care, unless the patient is already under the care of an ophthalmologists (and one that has not already gone into retirement). In Canada this means the best options for most is to head to a Hospital's Emergency (where an affiliated Eye Care Teaching Hospital will lead to the fastest assessment).

My husband has only one eye with significant floaters. A couple Retinologists have talked about doing a Vitrectomy to pull out the vitreous but he hasn’t pursued it due to the very small chance there could be an issue causing him to go blind. So there is an option but only in extreme cases.
