In an interview Dimash explained this song is aimed at immigrants who have to leave their homeland for example, for their safety. You will immediately be transported into an oriental adventure film. The instrument used here is the Qobyz and it was a great idea by Dimash to use that here. The Qobyz is a very old two stringed Kazakh folk instrument and it’s wide spread among Kazakhs. The man who often is playing the Qobyz in Dimash’s performance (also here in Stranger) is the best on this instrument and a good friend of Dimash. His name is Olzhas Qurmanbek. You often can hear this instrument when Dimash sings in his native tongue like Samaltau, Qairan Elim or Òmir Òter. As a Kazakh he speaks Kazakh and Russian fluently. He sang Stranger for the first time at New Wave in Sochi, Russia in 2021. This is an international competition for young artists, founded in 2002 by Igor Krutoy. Dimash sang here as a guest and was also a member of the jury. Igor Krutoy, like so many other masterpieces, wrote this song specifically for Dimash and his incredible vocal range (in this song alone he sings 5 octaves F1-F6 I think). And the last note he held for 20 seconds. The way he switchs so affortlessly between the different registers and octaves in one song is so mesmerizing and unbelievable. As already mentioned before, Stranger was written by the famous Russian/Ukrainian composer, producer and songwriter Igor Krutoy. His and Dimash's collaboration created true masterpieces. The instrument is a kobyz, an ancient precursor of the violin. The pianist is Igor Krutoy who composed it for Dimash. They have a close partnership. It must be thrilling for Krutoy to be able to write for someone who can hit every note humanly possible. He doesn't reside in China except when he's there to perform. He has spent several months in the U.S., California to be exact. He performed three quite different songs at this venue and won an award for being the young award winner who had gone the farthest in his career.

It was nice to see you discover Dimash through Angel Love but it was funny watching you work your way through Stranger 🤣 Dimash has songs of all genres, with his training there's absolutely nothing he can't do. I would highly recommend watching his music video Be With Me which is in English and then follow that up with The Pearl Fishers Duet. You mentioned Pavarotti? Well, Pavarotti was one of The Three Tenors, the other two were Jose Carreras and Placido Domingo. Dimash does a full on operatic duet with Placido which convinced even non opera lovers that it wasn't so bad after all.

Stranger was written by Igor Krutoy (on piano) especially for Dimash. They have collaborated on a number of songs, all brilliant. The instrument featured here is a Kazakh one called Kobyz or Qobyz & you will hear this beautiful instrument in a number of Dimash songs, especially his Kazakh folk songs, which are always fantastic. Another Kazakh instrument used a lot is a Dombra or Dombyra, which Dimash also plays. He truly is a once-in-a-lifetime artist. Although some people continue to say the song is about immigrants or refugees, it was not written about that at all. If Dimash had sung the additional verse that was missed out from all of his Stranger performances perhaps it would have been much clearer what the song was about. The missing verse talks about remembering the feel of a sword in his hand and his skin being branded by fire, but now there is no sword and no scar. It is about reincarnation of the soul into a new body while still remembering something of his past life. This might be challenging for some people as the existence of reincarnation is not accepted by everyone. I am always happy watching as new people learn of and recognize Dimash’s incredible talent, but even more so, I love as people recognize his humanity. Dimash is a phenomenon who truly is a world representative. Of the three songs premiered by Dimash during this same concert series (Fly Away, Ave Maria and Stranger), Stranger is my favourite but my favourite is always the last one I listened to! Lyrics to "Stranger" were written by US song writer Sharon Vaughn, inexplicably enough because her song writing history (which is a long one) includes almost exclusively songs for US country artists----nearly every major country artist of the '80s, '90s and beyond! I am not aware of how she came to write this one, or if it was written specifically for Dimash or if he just found it somewhere. Hopefully someone else knows.

👉 Part 2: In 2017, Dimash surprised everyone, not only in China. His first album was certified 1x platinum in 37 seconds, 3x platinum in 47 minutes and 5x platinum in one day. (Each country has its own regulations)
He opened the eyes of his critical compatriots. Today, Dimash is his country's "cultural ambassador" and a "national treasure" (no official title). He himself is a proud Kazakh and patriot and is passionately committed to peace in the world.
Dimash plays at least 7 instruments, traditional dombra is a must in Kazakh familys. He speaks 3 languages: Kazakh (mother tongue), Russian without an accent (second language in Kazakhstan) and English. So far he sings in 16 languages (phonetically). Dimash says dancing is difficult for him. But he moves great on stage and his hands speak. He is a grandiose and sensitive story teller. Dimash trains his voice 3-4 hours every day...but he says: "You don't have to know how hard I've worked, you just have to enjoy the results."
In professional circles, Dimash is considered a lyrical baritone with a typically wide range. Some believe that he does not sing his high notes as a countertenor (Falsetto)but as a natural soprano (Head voice). He is the first singer to sing all 5 voices: bass, baritone, tenor, alto, soprano.
His current pitch range is G0 - D8 (outside the piano), 7,7 octaves! At least that's what Dimash shows us so far. 😃

The cool instrument is called KOBYZ. It is an ancient Kazakh instrument. This song was written for Dimash, by Igor Krutoy, the bald guy who played the piano. He is a famous Russian composer who came out of retirement just to work with Dimash. He wrote several songs for Dimash.

He is so awesome, isn’t he? Stranger is one of my absolute favorite songs. I get goosebumps every time I hear it. I love these mythical sounds. You will immediately be transported into an oriental adventure film. The instrument used here is the Qobyz and it was a great idea by Dimash to use that here.
The Qobyz is a very old two stringed Kazakh folk instrument and it’s wide spread among Kazakhs. The man who often is playing the Qobyz in Dimash’s performance (also here in Stranger) is the best on this instrument and a good friend of Dimash. His name is Olzhas Qurmanbek. You often can hear this instrument when Dimash sings in his native tongue like Samaltau, Qairan Elim or Òmir Òter.
As a Kazakh he speaks Kazakh and Russian fluently. He sang Stranger for the first time at New Wave in Sochi, Russia in 2021. This is an international competition for young artists, founded in 2002 by Igor Krutoy. Dimash sang here as a guest and was also a member of the jury. Igor Krutoy, like so many other masterpieces, wrote this song specifically for Dimash and his incredible vocal range (in this song alone he sings 5 octaves F1-F6 I think). And the last note he held for 20 seconds. The way he switchs so affortlessly between the different registers and octaves in one song is so mesmerizing and unbelievable.
As already mentioned before, Stranger was written by the famous Russian/Ukrainian composer, producer and songwriter Igor Krutoy. His and Dimash's collaboration created true masterpieces. He writes songs that only Dimash could sing with his vocal range, such as Olimpico, Stranger or Ave Maria. You’ll often see him accompanying Dimash on the piano. If Igor Krutoy is there, the song was also written by him. The two have no contract. Their cooperation is based more on mutual trust. It’s more like a father/son relationship.
You also could see it as a song about reincarnation. What many don’t know is that Sharon Vaughn wrote a second verse for Stranger, though Dimash didn’t sing it during the New Wave performance. You can find them on his YT channel in Russian. I got the translation from a Dear. Thanks for that:

Olimpico is another masterpiece that Igor Krutoy wrote especially for Dimash’s vocal skills (like so many others). It was written for the 2nd European Games 2019 in Minsk, Belarus and also won an award for Best Song of the Year in Russia in this year. The text is therefore very motivating.
This song and this performance from this Arnau concert is my absolute favourite🥰 I think this version is the best, because his performance is so intense and breathtaking. The light show, the background dancers. Everything. With this song in this version I always get breathlessness. The way he represents himself on stage, the hand movements.
I think he has incredibly beautiful hands🤭 (and apparently many cameramen think so too, because in many close-ups of his performances only his hands can be seen. Sometimes it seems as if he is conducting himself. That's really fascinating). And the facial expression, the look. Wow, he looks so commanding😱.
In my opinion, this version of Olimpico is one of the most impressive performances ever. Without subtitles, if you don't know what the song is about, you'd think he was going to war and motivating his army to fight a losing battle 😅! It’s absolutely stunning. The instrument is a kobyz, an ancient precursor of the violin. The pianist is Igor Krutoy who composed it for Dimash. They have a close partnership. It must be thrilling for Krutoy to be able to write for someone who can hit every note humanly possible. He doesn't reside in China except when he's there to perform. He has spent several months in the U.S., California to be exact. He performed three quite different songs at this venue and won an award for being the young award winner who had gone the farthest in his career.

“Stranger“ symbolizes rebirth, the reincarnation. This performance is full of symbols. I would highly recommend watching his music video Be With Me which is in English and then follow that up with The Pearl Fishers Duet. You mentioned Pavarotti? Well, Pavarotti was one of The Three Tenors, the other two were Jose Carreras and Placido Domingo. Dimash does a full on operatic duet with Placido which convinced even non opera lovers that it wasn't so bad after all.

Stranger was written by Igor Krutoy (on piano) especially for Dimash. They have collaborated on a number of songs, all brilliant. The instrument featured here is a Kazakh one called Kobyz or Qobyz & you will hear this beautiful instrument in a number of Dimash songs, especially his Kazakh folk songs, which are always fantastic. Another Kazakh instrument used a lot is a Dombra or Dombyra, which Dimash also plays. He truly is a once-in-a-lifetime artist.
His more recent English songs, his own compositions, are When I've Got You & Smoke. The mv's, which Dimash also produces, are fantastic too.

Although some people continue to say the song is about immigrants or refugees, it was not written about that at all. If Dimash had sung the additional verse that was missed out from all of his Stranger performances perhaps it would have been much clearer what the song was about. The missing verse talks about remembering the feel of a sword in his hand and his skin being branded by fire, but now there is no sword and no scar. It is about reincarnation of the soul into a new body while still remembering something of his past life. This might be challenging for some people as the existence of reincarnation is not accepted by everyone.
The song was written by Igor Krutoy (the bald guy at the piano) especially for Dimash to showcase his range and versatility.

Lyrics to "Stranger" were written by US song writer Sharon Vaughn, inexplicably enough because her song writing history (which is a long one) includes almost exclusively songs for US country artists----nearly every major country artist of the '80s, '90s and beyond! I am not aware of how she came to write this one, or if it was written specifically for Dimash or if he just found it somewhere. Hopefully someone else knows.

Dimash Qudaibergen (Dinmukhammed Qanatuly Qudaibergen) was born on May 24, 1994 in Aktobe, Kazakhstan. He is 1.91 m (6.3 ft) tall.
Dimash is a singer, composer, multi-instrumentalist, producer, actor, video director, screenwriter and entrepreneur who has received the title of Honored Artist of Kazakhstan (2019), People's Artist of Kazakhstan (2023) and many other significant awards around the world.
Dimash Qudaibergen was very fortunate to be born into musical 'royalty'. Grandfather was a professional dombra player, grandmother was a teacher and sang. His mother Svetlana Aitbayeva has a classical education (not opera singer). His father, Kanat Aitbayev, is also a singer, songwriter and producer. His parents are known throughout the country and are “Honored Music Artists of Kazakhstan”. Both have been seen on the big stages and on television in Kazakhstan for many years.

According to Kazakh tradition, Dimash grew up with his grandparents. He calls them mom and dad and for a long time thought his parents were brother and sister-in-law. They all live together in one house.
Dimash said: "Open my heart, you will find music. If you open my brain you will find music. Music is my life."
Dimash wasn't a child prodigy, but he always wanted to be a musician and grew up surrounded by music. As a young boy (2 years old) he would often sit in the audience at his parents' performances and run onto the stage when they bowed at the end, and he did the same. While other children drew cars or princesses, Dimash drew a music studio and the instruments.

In his childhood, Dimash trained in taekwondo. With his 'soprano voice', Dimash did not fit into the traditional image of a singer in Kazakhstan and was heavily criticized in his youth. As a child he performed at concerts and took part in various competitions. In 2012, Dimasch won the Grand Prix of Kazakh young singers “Schas Kanat” (“Young Wings”). In the same year he received first prize in the Ukrainian TV competition “Vostochnyi Bazaar” (Oriental Market), and a year later he won first place in the Kyrgyz international festival “Making Asia”. In 2015, Dimasch won the Grand Prize of the Belarusian music festival “Slavyansky Bazaar” (Slavic Market) - a milestone in the young singer's career.
The career jump to global megastar came in January 2017 after his participation in the Chinese singing competition with well-known professional singers “The Singer 2017”.
In 2016, Dimash turned down the offer of an engagement at the National Opera in Astana (capital of Kazakhstan) because he wanted to go his own way. He created his own genre: neo-classical combined with classical, folklore and other styles like pop, rock, R&B and jazz. We lay people say “Popera”.
