    A big thank you to all who contributed to the fundraiser last week. I met my target and beyond. My apologies for not answering all the comments, I can handle one video per week but with 8 videos within 2 weeks, there were too many comments for me to answer all. However, I read all your comments, and thank you!

    Had a pair of Rogers LS8a floorstanders from new since 1988 and they sound great. Possibly because the speakers use polypropylene instead of paper. Good range, great detail and soundstage. I love them.

    Wow! That is so true. I play guitar and I have NEVER heard the guitar sound exactly as it does in a room on any speakers I've auditioned. That is a big weakness and an
    acid test for any speaker. The guitar, if one is familiar with it, has a certain TONAL quality that is difficult to get right. Now, having said that, yes some speakers get closer,
    but you can almost always tell, that's not live, lol!
    I heard an old set of Rodgers LS3/5s years ago and everyone at the show was surprised at what those little suckxrs could do.

    I used to own these speaker when I was in college. One night I got drunk and sold them for $100 not knowing what I was doing wrong. To the day I die, I will regret that mistake. That terrible mistake. These speakers are amazing and I really appreciate your review. Now that I am older and am able to appreciate the sound more, I will never make that mistake again. I hope to purchase these speakers one day yet again. They are just too good for the average person. If you love fantastic sound, than these are for you.

    Great video Thomas! I liked your "homage" to the Rogers name and one of the most iconic products in the audio history. I grew up very fond of Rogers and one of the best hi-fi experiences that I had in my whole life was when I listened to a setup in a small audio shop in Hong Kong, I can't remember the source, but I do remember it was a pair of Rogers LS3/5A and a Mission Cyrus One integrated. Ironically, I owned several speakers and still do, but I never got to own a pair of Rogers. It's no wonder the brand became Chinese-owned, as many audiophiles in China have a deep respect for Rogers.

    Thank you for your "non review" of the Rogers LS 5/9. Reminds me of the sound that I used to hear with my Rogers LS7's together with my Rogers HG88 Mkii tube amplifier. Still have the LS7's playing in system 2 but unfortunately sold my HG88's. Regret the sale to this day. Fortunately, I am very happy with my Castle Howard speakers as the price of the new LS 5/9 is way out of my league. I believe that for most of us who listen to music as opposed to hi-Fi gear US$2000 for a speaker is a lot of money. I agree with you about matching and that there is no best equipment. This is a case of caveat emptor. I found an integrated amp that suits the Howards after a period using a pre-amp and 2 power amps so I could bi-amp and that has now been my long term team. Music first. Listening to you, Sean and Ian is enjoyable but will not alter my setup. Kind regards. Stay well. Daniel

    The ProAc Response 1SC British monitor also used a thin wall speaker cabinet design. They were tuned to take full advantage of the midrange frequencies, primarily the female voice. Guitars, saxophones, and violins all take on a reedy quality that emulate true tone...

So that is why we have our audio systems. Back in the early 80's a friend of mine had a pair of the LS5/3A's . They sounded better on my system than his and I wanted to keep them because couldn't believe the sound coming out those small speakers. Great review and was enjoyable

    Back in early 90s, I first heard the LS3 playing the legendary Sheffield Drum Record, powered by big CJ amps. The impact and tone of Ron Tutt and Jim Keltner’s drums are simply amazing.
    That music reproduction is still the reference in my head to this day. As a next best thing, I’ve been using Proac 1SC with Nordost Frey2 cables, and PrimaLuna amp with KT120 tubes to get a similar sound.

He showed me a pair of graham Audio LS 5/8 which is kind of a bigger brother of this 5/9, also with think wall design. At that time I knew nothing about the company and the Design Philosoph. But this speaker looked a little like diy Box and because of that the price of 2800 € seems to high for me. I listened to the speaker only for one hour but I swear I never heard better speaker. Never mind.
    Anyway, I would like to relate one of my encounter in a shop that repair, retrofit and build tube amps and speakers. One day, I stepped into the shop and was so mesmerised by the music... It was so effortless and so real... And was playing from a single speaker.
    The lady boss then told me that if I wanna evaluate speakers, I should start by listening in mono, ie, 1 speaker where you evaluate how real the human voice or an instrument is reproduced. Soundstaging, imaging can come later coz the reproduced sound must sound real 1st. Period.

    Great review! Great to learn that Rogers are back making their best products. Any chance of a re-introduction of the LS3/6 and LS5/8's? Or have these been licensed exclusively to Stirling Broadcast? I'd wish they'd re-introduce and improve their Ravensbourne and Cadet amps rather than develop new-fangled designs.
    And what make are these stands? I've seen them before but never found out who makes them.
    Btw Baltic/Russian birch ply is a generic term used for plywood of particular provenance and construction. It can mean the birch wood provenance is from these regions and that the layers have a specific construction (e.g. odd number of layers, 1mm thick outer faces etc.). It's a heavier/harder wood that that used in other types of plywood i.e. is akin to solid wood but has the advantages that plywood offers.
    The important thing about plywood, especially when it comes it to loudspeaker cabinets, is the quality of construction, i.e. lack of voids (can hear the difference by tapping on it) absence of knots and other defects. That's pretty much my understanding of it.

    Very cool.They seem to have the tome refinement of another Brit the Audio Note AN's.I would like to hear them head to head with Harbeth 30.2 but Rogers seem to be about 30% more expensive so maybe not a fair comparison. They are pricey which makes me wonder if you can get the same sound with Vintage Rogers.One thing you didn't mention was the load which I think is 8 ohm (yes with 89 db efficiency) but that they also make another BBC speaker the LS3/5 which is 15 ohm and 82.5 efficient.Be fun to compare the two."Hail,Hail Britannia,Britannia rules the (sound) waves...."

    What a review. Only 24 made and you already reviewed one. In case of instruments, tone is a major thing. Often the deciding factor of buying one guitar over another similar guitar is the tone. Same for violin, piano, etc. Even for voice of a bird or human - the tone is what naturally attracts us. So I guess it’s all about being analytical or just following the natural instinct.

    Hi Thomas, I have Monitor Audio RS6 silvers and I think they are very fine speakers. Certainly better than many speakers costing 10 times more. I just ordered a pair of speakers similar to the Rogers you were showing in this video. They should arrive tomorrow. They use the same drivers as those used in the Spica TC-50 but they are in a traditional box design like the Rogers rather than the sloped top on the Spica. I'm anxious to hear them as they are supposed to be very natural in the midrange just like the Rogers. I'll be using them with my vintage system.

      @@ThomasAndStereo I've only listened to them briefly but what I've found so far is they are very good with vocals and acoustic guitar sounds like there's a guitar in the room. The midrange and highs are very well balanced and very open sounding -- good imaging as well. The specs state the low frequency as being 63 Hz but they sound much stronger than that to me. You definitely don't really need a sub with these.

      Yes the Harbeth`s are based on the BBC 5/9, but Alan Shaw has moved the sound ever so slightly in different direction, if you want a true 5/9 now, then the Graham Audio 5/9 is it, this Rogers 5/9 seam to also have a BBC licence agreement, so it should sound nearly identical to the Grahams´s, although I like the looks of the Grahams better.

    Tonal balance I think you're looking for, try turning your subwoofers around and at 0.9 metres from the wall pointing slightly towards the centre see how that sounds with the speakers, the output will need to be lower possibly absorption like a cushion or diffuser but maybe not necessary, and block up any port partially with poly fibre see how that sounds with them, you've not tried any room correction with them mainly the subs would benefit not the main speakers.
    What's going on with that wire on the side is it some sort of Jumper? Do you know what thickness the baffle is looks about quarter of an inch and what material plywood?
    Any chance of doing inside inspection always check screws on their torque settings it could be tuned in the back baffle you could try this with a tuning fork or probably a guitar tuner interesting to see what they are tuned at probably E-flat

    • @ThomasAndStereo
      @ThomasAndStereo  4 года назад +1

      Unfortunately, these are going back this weekend so I would not have time to do it. (At work right now) The jumper is to adjust the treble from my understanding. Perhaps in the fall if I ever get a chance to try them again.

    Thanks for the review. Great as usual. I'm wondering why you mention tone as an attribute of the speaker and not the amp. Back in the late 90s-early 2000s when I was a reviewer for SoundStage! I had plenty of gear in my place. Tone is something I'd use to describe the amp. Maybe the Rogers do a better job portraying the tone of the amps you're using. Just sharing my thoughts.

    • @ThomasAndStereo
      @ThomasAndStereo  4 года назад

      Good question. I wonder if the tone is with amp and timber is with speakers? Something for me to figure out?

    • @kirarittberg5088
      @kirarittberg5088 4 года назад

      Mike Masztal Not wanting a semantics argument, any speaker will impart it's tone (coloration) over any amplifiers signal. An amplifier may be tonally coloured to a noticeable or insignificant amount. Usually most system coloration is speakers to a greater degree and amps to a lesser degree. Personally I think an amp should be close to neutral sounding or it is flawed. Of course speakers make sound and amps don't so technically tone is from a speaker and the amp produces electrical signals. We describe amps by sound, but really that is because the terminology to describe the amps electrical signals eludes us, and effects on sound is more familiar terminology. Make no mistake about it, the tonality of the sound is primarily the speaker and the amplifier can only influence that tone to a lesser or greater degree. When I have tried various amps with a set of speakers the change is subtle. When I try different speakers with an amp there are much larger differences than amp swaps.
