This is sad for me, but understandable. As a developer, it's become increasingly harder for me to keep my plugins on 1.8 and even though i'll probably keep support for 1.8 on public plugins i can understand this change and tbh we all saw it coming, can't stay on 1.8 for forever
3:14 fps will not by much, if at all the biggest issue i see is loading times. texture packs take ages to load on lower end devices, but in my experience even a texture pack with like 400 custom textures and models will not hurt your fps custom server texture packs will also automatically delete themselves after some time, and even on MCCi (the largest custom texture pack I know of being used by a server), their server texture pack is only like 40mb
I'm honestly surprised Hypixel hasn't switched to the newest version yet. Holding onto a version that will never be updated is something that's just going to inevitably kill your server, as you are limited to what you can do. Furthermore, Over 70% of players on Hypixel may use the 1.8 verison, sure, but the total amount of players still using that version is less than 10%, so they're missing out on a lot of new players. I personally am not really a huge fan of the 1.9 PVP changes, but imo its pointless to hold onto the old as its only going to rust and rot. If there are enough people who want a change they should focus on asking Mojang for it, and as for Hypixel I belive that switching to the 1.20 version is evidently the right move.
You forgot to mention it's pretty much possible to recreate 1.8 pvp on newer versions and Hypixel is a bad server in terms of pvp stuff overall, so true pvp players should just go to a different one
@user-h7W178TsRk that's an incorrect statement. Hypixel uses vanilla kb which is preferred amongst a lot of people, the only problems with it have to do with the anti cheat. In contrast, mmc does not use vanilla KB.
They have kept 1.8 because it is the foundation for most of the games they've coded and when 1.9 came out, no one liked that version. It took many years before modern version combat to become as popular as it is today. Hypixel has a large pvp community centered around 1.8 and mechanics like the fishing rod which is a main mechanic in most gamemodes wouldn't work if they switched versions. The gameplay in most of their games revolves around how fast paced 1.8 is in comparison to 1.20+. Also newer versions are poorly optimized
Finally. 1.8 Has been exhausted completely, amd right now it's almost impossible to invent something new and interesting that hasn't been done before. Due to that the 1.8 community has been declining and many RUclipsrs left, because it was just too hard to create original content, and replaying bedwars for the next thousand times wasn't fun anymore. Now we have a chance for something fresh, that might be fun again. Since 1.8 many items have been added that make pvp more diverse and interesting. For example scaffoldings could be added to bedwars as more expensive but faster way to bridge. Mojang has made numerous improvements especially in last few versions that custom servers can take advantage of. Better control over custom items with components. Teansfer packets that hypixel wanted for so long. Tons of changes that I don't even remember. So I think exciting times are coming, and hypixel might jump on the wave back again. I wish in some time I will be able to smash players with the new mace and wind charges on hypixel, while enjoying decent ping from europe. (We have a higher chance for eu region now for newer versions at least, because hypixel said they can consider this if mojang added transfer packets and they did that recently)

I have the same thoughts, cuz if hypixel updates to 1.9 and everyone switches to it while killing 1.8 then I might just stop playing the server itself, but it depends on what they're updating, I wouldn't want every game on the server to be updated to 1.9+ however updating housing to the new versions could be interesting

I only play Hypixel for fun since I main Bridge Scrims (a separate competitive server), but when I just want to chill and relax, I want to play on Hypixel with a combat system that I understand and enjoy and find satisfying (1.8.9). I'll be completely fine with them separating the modes, but not completely overriding. They wouldn't be very smart to abandon 70% of their playerbase, but who knows what they'll do.

1.21 bedwars would be so fun with breeze balls (they should be called breeze balls not wind charges) would be so fun. They could also add stuff in 1.21 bedwars as an expensive rotational item called the tiny potion which could make u tiny but still have save jump height and speed but reduced reach as you would be harder to hit and other cool things like this
I think they could update Hypixel normally because with some commands you can make all the swords not having the cooldown anymore, which was one of the principal reason Hypixel is still on 1.8.
do you realize how INSANE bedwars would be if it had 1.21 features? clutches would be more advanced (boats, haybales, wind charges) and if they added a super expensive mace i don't know how many clips people would make out of it.
@turntqble there are plugins that would allow the old combat remain, while still getting the newer features. So, you might still keep your preferred combat.

When they released the park in the 0.7.4 in late 2019, they kind of said in patch notes that 2nd tier of foraging island was one of their projects for 2020. Meaning we have waited the foraging update for nearly 5 years instead of 3.
My issue with resource packs isn’t with performance, but just that I like the look of skyblock using purely vanilla mobs and items. I feel like it adds to the charm.
i think that in 1.22 they should have a toggle in the world settings one for 1.8 pvp and the other for 1.9 + i think this will be the best way to move players to the newer versions with out taking away the only thing that keeps players on 1.8
This wouldn't work at all, there's a lot of features exclusive to 1.8 that are more favorable for its own combat system than if u were to recreate 1.8 pvp on 1.9. In short, it'd be impossible to perfectly replicate 1.8 pvp on modern versions
As for the texture pack: I feel like just having it on their official website as an optional installation is a better alternative as a posed to what mcci does. One player can run the texture pack for the official experience and other can not for optimization.

i think this update is amazing because 1.9 combat is quite underrated. it is smoother and less straight forward than point and click faster which is literally what the internet thinks is entertaining (it really isn't they just grind and make the game their job), but it is instead, more complicated timing for hits, more weapons and play styles implemented that fit seamlessly into the combat system, varying damages that make sense, and special mechanics. it honestly is way better no matter what yall sweats think. Minecraft pvp was never meant to be based around clicking fast, and I'm all here for this change. granted it still opens the possibility of keeping the old pvp style in the server, but 1.9 pvp only is bad due to the time it takes. trust me. if 1.8 pvp took as much time as 1.9 pvp did, this controversy would be that most one sided debate of all time. i know there are downsides to 1.9 pvp, but are they really larger problems than 1.8 pvp being repetitive and unoriginal?
Hypixel is great because it is on 1.8.9, and I don't care about lack of updates as long as hypixel fix their lag problems and knockback, then I'm chillin with hypixel!!

I think hypixel should make a separate server which is all 1.21+ which includes crystals, warden boom, and elytra and if that server is way more successful than the 1.8 hypixel for 3 months they should completely change to 1.21

I can no longer play hypixel skyblock because my computer can only play 1.16.5, and any above either crashes or is unplayable. At least bedwars will still work.

1.9+ pvp bedwars would be sick. They could add crossbows, fishing rods (for yeeting people into the void), netherite, tridents, and basically everything from the latest versions. I wouldn't like the custom texture pack BECAUSE... 1. It could lower FPS 2. It could overlay texture packs that I/we like 3. I'm used to the default minecraft menu that we all know and love
If they add a custom texture pack it will tamper with other texture packs that change GUIs which will be unenjoyable, but if the 1.9 PvP system comes into sb it will certainly change every current meta

My only problem is the new inventory. I think why some ppl play Hypixel is because of the vanilla Minecraft inventory because when other servers do it, it just looks big and ugly. I also hope that clients like lunar and badilon on can come up with mods that can set ur inventory screen to the vanilla version, that is if Hypixel makes that inventory update actually happen.
I do actually hope that some duel games keep 1.8.9 so they can have good combat but yet add new versions too. cause if you remove 1.8.9 and only 1.20+ it will make duels much more weird to do and might remove some techniques people do that they've been learning for years

I started playing on Java around a year ago and I started playing purely MCCI I still play mostly MCCI and Ive bearly even touched Hypixel and 1.8.9 as a whole mainly because of the lack of 1.9+ features (primarily the off-hand and weapon cooldown) If they do make 1.20+ versions of the popular gamemodes, Id definitely play on Hypixel a lot more and I just think this concept as a whole is really cool
As long as they still keep the 1.8 versions of the gamemodes (I personally think that PVP was better) then it's amazing. I have nothing against the new combat mechanics I just think they are more suitable for PVE rather than PVP.
Hypixel going to 1.9+ would be amazing, I feel as if 1.8.9 was superior for a while but now the version is just missing so many features it pales in comparison to modern minecraft.
Personally i would love a newer version of the hypixel games. With bad ping on older versions, hits take longer to actually register. Compared to newer version, they register for the server making the person you hit take damage, its just slightly delayed on my own screen, making pvp for people with bad ping a little more balanced (at least that's how it works with my ping for some reason)
Honestly abandoning 1.8 pvp is kinda whatever because their anticheat already makes that combat borderline unplayable For example somehow i got kb resistance when sword blocking which shouldn't take place Also i'd say it won't be as laggy once you take mods into consideration, because vanilla 1.21 obviously is more laggy than 1.8, but 1.8 runs so much worse with 100 mods installed than 1.21
Hypixel doesnt have that bad of an anticheat it's just that they're the biggest targets of cheaters and clients (clients make bypasses for hypixel before other servers) and they really arent that big of an issue anymore unless youre like a winstreaker getting sniped, blatant cheating for fun has become very uncommon

the "reduce fps" arguement against upgrading is stupid because most players already use optimization mods on 1.8 and newer versions have great optimization through mods (even better than 1.8 I'd say)
I think a custom resource pack for Skyblock would be cool, but I would hope that parts of it could be overridden in order to allow for other resource packs to continue to exist.

I think hypixel will make the custom texture pack not needed, since its not really needed for bedwars, and its optional

I only play Hypixel for fun since I main Bridge Scrims (a separate competitive server), but when I just want to chill and relax, I want to play on Hypixel with a combat system that I understand and enjoy and find satisfying (1.8.9). I'll be completely fine with them separating the modes, but not completely overriding. They wouldn't be very smart to abandon 70% of their playerbase, but who knows what they'll do.

1.21 bedwars would be so fun with breeze balls (they should be called breeze balls not wind charges) would be so fun. They could also add stuff in 1.21 bedwars as an expensive rotational item called the tiny potion which could make u tiny but still have save jump height and speed but reduced reach as you would be harder to hit and other cool things like this

I think they could update Hypixel normally because with some commands you can make all the swords not having the cooldown anymore, which was one of the principal reason Hypixel is still on 1.8.
do you realize how INSANE bedwars would be if it had 1.21 features? clutches would be more advanced (boats, haybales, wind charges) and if they added a super expensive mace i don't know how many clips people would make out of it.

When they released the park in the 0.7.4 in late 2019, they kind of said in patch notes that 2nd tier of foraging island was one of their projects for 2020. Meaning we have waited the foraging update for nearly 5 years instead of 3.

My issue with resource packs isn’t with performance, but just that I like the look of skyblock using purely vanilla mobs and items. I feel like it adds to the charm.
i think that in 1.22 they should have a toggle in the world settings one for 1.8 pvp and the other for 1.9 + i think this will be the best way to move players to the newer versions with out taking away the only thing that keeps players on 1.8

This wouldn't work at all, there's a lot of features exclusive to 1.8 that are more favorable for its own combat system than if u were to recreate 1.8 pvp on 1.9. In short, it'd be impossible to perfectly replicate 1.8 pvp on modern versions

i think this update is amazing because 1.9 combat is quite underrated. it is smoother and less straight forward than point and click faster which is literally what the internet thinks is entertaining (it really isn't they just grind and make the game their job), but it is instead, more complicated timing for hits, more weapons and play styles implemented that fit seamlessly into the combat system, varying damages that make sense, and special mechanics. it honestly is way better no matter what yall sweats think. Minecraft pvp was never meant to be based around clicking fast, and I'm all here for this change. granted it still opens the possibility of keeping the old pvp style in the server, but 1.9 pvp only is bad due to the time it takes. trust me. if 1.8 pvp took as much time as 1.9 pvp did, this controversy would be that most one sided debate of all time. i know there are downsides to 1.9 pvp, but are they really larger problems than 1.8 pvp being repetitive and unoriginal?

i think it would be cool to see separate games for 1.8 and 1.9 pvp for bedwars and skywars, but the only issue is that it would split the playerbase and it could take longer to queue games
I think hypixel should make a separate server which is all 1.21+ which includes crystals, warden boom, and elytra and if that server is way more successful than the 1.8 hypixel for 3 months they should completely change to 1.21

1.9+ pvp bedwars would be sick. They could add crossbows, fishing rods (for yeeting people into the void), netherite, tridents, and basically everything from the latest versions.
I wouldn't like the custom texture pack BECAUSE...
1. It could lower FPS
2. It could overlay texture packs that I/we like
3. I'm used to the default minecraft menu that we all know and love
If they add a custom texture pack it will tamper with other texture packs that change GUIs which will be unenjoyable, but if the 1.9 PvP system comes into sb it will certainly change every current meta

My only problem is the new inventory. I think why some ppl play Hypixel is because of the vanilla Minecraft inventory because when other servers do it, it just looks big and ugly. I also hope that clients like lunar and badilon on can come up with mods that can set ur inventory screen to the vanilla version, that is if Hypixel makes that inventory update actually happen.

2:58 tbh it wouldnt rly be an issue with a custom texture pack being featured. You can always modify their own texturepack with like the default one but adding the custom map into that folder. And it also depends on what mods you are running on your minecraft aswell. Performance is a big thing in minecraft and we want all the fps we have...

I started playing on Java around a year ago and I started playing purely MCCI
I still play mostly MCCI and Ive bearly even touched Hypixel and 1.8.9 as a whole mainly because of the lack of 1.9+ features (primarily the off-hand and weapon cooldown)
If they do make 1.20+ versions of the popular gamemodes, Id definitely play on Hypixel a lot more and I just think this concept as a whole is really cool

Personally i would love a newer version of the hypixel games. With bad ping on older versions, hits take longer to actually register. Compared to newer version, they register for the server making the person you hit take damage, its just slightly delayed on my own screen, making pvp for people with bad ping a little more balanced (at least that's how it works with my ping for some reason)

Honestly abandoning 1.8 pvp is kinda whatever because their anticheat already makes that combat borderline unplayable
For example somehow i got kb resistance when sword blocking which shouldn't take place
Also i'd say it won't be as laggy once you take mods into consideration, because vanilla 1.21 obviously is more laggy than 1.8, but 1.8 runs so much worse with 100 mods installed than 1.21
Hypixel doesnt have that bad of an anticheat it's just that they're the biggest targets of cheaters and clients (clients make bypasses for hypixel before other servers) and they really arent that big of an issue anymore unless youre like a winstreaker getting sniped, blatant cheating for fun has become very uncommon
