Magnus' catalan reminds me of Kasparov sicilian, in the sense that it seems like nobody is able to fully refute it, they always get really good position and just win
I'd rather say Magnus - the Catalan is a match "made in heaven" because of the deep understanding of the positions resulting that is required in order to regularly play it. Even among the SuperGMs there are few who are able to squeeze wins out of this opening the way Magnus does...
As someone who plays the catalan, I found this immensely helpful. Love the idea of multiple games focusing on an opening a gm specializes in. Allows us to see variations at the top level. Thanks Levy.
I remember that game against Anish to this day and I don't remember many chess games because I'm a beginner/intermediate player. Magnus's knight a3 was so counter-intuitive but in the end it was another masterpiece by the Norwegian genius
I think this video made me truly understand how dominant Magnus is. How truly skilled he is. I started watching this video as I got home while in the car and by Game 5 and 6 I was literally glued to the seat, seatbelt still on, ahhhing and uuuuuing at my phone as if I was watching Formula 1. Great content, great breakdown.
I think it can't be done in some tourney like the candidates, st Louis, etc. Probably will be fun in online like that Chess24 series or some "slightly less serious" tourney.
If the black queen captures the pawn (Qxb5), white plays Nd4 attacking the queen. The queen then has to move and can't protect the black knight on d7 anymore, which then white can take with the rook.
Python and Anakonda both work. both are choking their prey to death. While Python is more of a general term for a number of different species of snakes, the Anakonda is a single species, found around the orinoko and the amazon river. It is the biggest of all snakes with a minblowing max length of up to 8,9 meters or 29 feet...... what a fascinating world we live in :D
At 30:07, why not take the pawn? You're still guarding the knight and there's nothing defending the pawn. If white's idea is to drop the rook back to a5 to force the queen to move and add pressure to the g5 pawn, I still don't think there's any checkmate there
That was really great to see specific Magnus Catalan games, this is an excellent format of video to make and I would love to watch more videos of different players / openings in the future
In game two, Levy says the Queen on a5 can't take the Bishop on d5. I eventually figured out why, but it would be more helpful if he had explained why. Or is that his clever way of making us think?
@@FezzesRCool11 I think because that would be followed by white's Qxc7, threatening Qxf1+ to be followed by Rxb7 and Qxg7. Black's rook can't protect f7 because of the Bishop on a3.
Hi Levy. first, I love your videos - I've learned a lot from you, thank you! I'm confused on the move pawn b4 to b5 attacking the queen at 30:06. I don't see why the queen didn't just take the pawn? (I'm only like low 800s so probably missing something ;)
It took me a moment to spot it, but if the queen takes the pawn, white will move the knight to D4, threatening the queen. The queen has to move, but there is no way for her to keep protecting the knight, so the white can just take it with the rook.
Game 4 was at the 2022 Tata Steel tournament and it's the game that finally convinced me that Carlsen is the greatest of all time. Kasparov, whom I had at #1, is now a close 2nd. Then Fischer, then Capablanca.
I think black loses the knight after Nd4 because queen has to move and can't defend the knight anymore then (if Qd5 we get Qxd5 and knight still gets taken). But I'm not 100% sure

Hi Levy, While I for the most part enjoy your content, you have a continual tendency toward clickbait titles. I really dislike clickbait, so every time I see you do this I kind of want to throw up in my mouth, and sometimes I actually do. Then, of course, since you're a smart guy, I have to consider the possibility that the title isn't *actually* clickbait, it's just some sort of pun, so then I, with regret, click on the video (which, you'll recall, I really didn't want to do, because of the apparent clickbait.) Sometimes when I do this, I end up enjoying the video anyway. But sometimes, as with this video, I only have to watch a few seconds to confirm that, no, Magnus did not, in the wake of the whole Neimann thing, do something that might actually get him banned somewhere, it was just that he played some games and doubtless won them in some superGM way and you thought "whoa, hardcore, they should BAN him for that!!" And since this is how the internet works, others will watch them and think the same thing (more or less, I don't think anyone actually hears those words in their head, but we get the idea), and you get to continue growing your business, and life goes on. But it still makes me want to throw up in my mouth. Sincerely, Someone who's spent a year struggling to get above 1300 in Blitz.

Magnus has just figured out how to outplay classic lines and this idea that chess must be played a certain way. “Asking your position new questions!” Love that
In the final game where the pawn attacks the queen to me it looked like the queen could take, after going out finding the game and doing the analysis, I understand why it cannot. In future could you quickly touch on moments such as these especially as game is moving toward conclusion. There was another similar incident in another video where it looks like easy capture, but not being able to see the subsequent moves or idea hindered my understanding. That second game is a prime example of why Magnus is the best. He doesn't just play the board, he plays his opponent into corners they don't even realise they are creating. Genius

how Magnus's play looks so simple for Levy, his How To Win At Chess episodes look the same for me :) thank you for the videos!
Great video! It's really fascinating how he's able to make this same opening work for him against so many different things
Initially, I didn't think the title was about Magnus using the infinity stones, but rather that Magnus snapped.
See what I did there?
No I didn’t
Damn i saw what you did there
@30:06 Why can't Qb5 just take the pawn? What am I missing here?

I really enjoyed this video, Levi. Please do more like this. Your review reminds me of the wines my wife and I like best - we buy wine from the same vines, year after year. You would think the wine would be the same, but no - it's amazing how much the wine changes each year. Just like Magnus and the Catalan.
Im actually loving how dramatic levy is for these titles
Lajos Portisch was the famous player that carried a black bag with all his notes on games and openings to every tournament he participated. One of the top ten players in the west during the Fischer era.
Would that be allowed with modern hunts for hidden devices?

Chess isn't a fair game, because white has 0.5 advantage before the game start. 1:00
Yea, that's why I resign immediatly after I will have black pieces
Can someone explain me why he didnt take the pawn at 30:06?
Love your content your videos are so indepth and yet fun to watch! Very much looking forward to the future of your channel you are an amazing content creator
30:06 why didn't the queen take the pawn on b5?? I don't understand chess.
I was just about to comment that ... I wonder why
Cause white knight would attack black's queen which would have to leave the guard of the black knight
@@alinevennemann1904 Thank you Aline. That makes sense. I've been trying to understand this game for 40 years. The mental computing power of these GMs (and your own) is a very beautiful thing. Kudos. Thank you.
31 min 31 sec straight Gotham being jealous of Magnus
Knowing your clickbaity titles: problably not.
Thank you Levy, you made Catalan easy to digest for us (1700++). Now I have reason to switch to d4 😆. Greet from Indonesia 🙏 , Papua
Catalan in my level 1500 is so strong i know there's better opening that is easy but most of the time my opponent can't handle the pressure of the light squared bishop
Magnus has just figured out how to outplay classic lines and this idea that chess must be played a certain way. “Asking your position new questions!” Love that
9:10 this is proofthat levi is washed up, he forgott his catchphrase "crisscross applesauce"
Thank you, this format - focusing on a specific player's handling of a specific opening - is excellent. Very helpful, very instructive.
I miss the thousand yard stare at the beginning..
Love the style of this vid. Would love to see more content like this

Why on 30:07 the black queen can't take the pawn on B5? 🤔
if Qxb5 happens then white plays Nd4 attacking the black queen and it can’t guard the knight on d7 anymore
@@vshsch4668 Thank! Yeah, I plotted in the engine and it's crushing indeed 😅
Yeah, btw game 6 of the WCC match against nepo was also a catalan and levy did a great job recapping it.
in case you care, the clickbait titles are starting to wear on some of us.
Yo why no recap for the Champions Chess Tour Final! Now will I actually have to watch the coverage 🙈
5:50 me whenever I lose any game
In the final game where the pawn attacks the queen to me it looked like the queen could take, after going out finding the game and doing the analysis, I understand why it cannot. In future could you quickly touch on moments such as these especially as game is moving toward conclusion. There was another similar incident in another video where it looks like easy capture, but not being able to see the subsequent moves or idea hindered my understanding. Thank you, appreciate the content.
That second game is a prime example of why Magnus is the best. He doesn't just play the board, he plays his opponent into corners they don't even realise they are creating.
Genius
This is what keeps bringing back to Gotham Chess, to hear Levy say something such as, "I'm not a snakeologist," lol.
Great video on the Catalan, would have clicked it sooner had the title been more reflective of the content!
gonna save this for a couple of hours later, thx for the amazing content Levy
hey Levy. i hope this comment is useful to you. So for hair loss/male pattern baldness there is 3 things you can do: ketakonazole shampoo, minoxidil/rogaine and microneedeling with derma roller. These are proven to work and ive done a TON of research but i sugest you do your own reaserch too. Please check out the youtuber MorePlatesMoreDates's videos on the topic. You can search for MPMD hairloss. Cheers
I love it. Catalan middle games are fascinating. Easy to gain advantage, sometimes very unclear how to convert. Svidlers grunfield would be fantastic. Also I've been considering moving to a 1Nf3 move order but I have no idea who to suggest for the Reti. There isn't even a quality chessable course on it (chessley opportunity?). The games are always fun to watch though. Thank you for the video. Be wonderful.
