Every car has the VIN ( Vehicle Identification Number) stamped on the engine AND transmission from the manufacturer. With the VIN, the mechanic can call the dealer and find out what kind of transmission came in the car. The transmission shop is the best place for today's cars. Cheap isn't the best way to go.
Unfortunately, this is not required by the NHTSA VIN standard. Some OEMs still use the same 10-digit VIN patterns for automatic and manual transmission vehicles, meaning that VIN alone will not be enough to determine the vehicle's transmission type.
I don't understand how people can not understand that working on a vehicle is hard and it might not be done right when they say it will be one? Just went through this recently. Dealership said our truck would be done that afternoon, it wasn't. Got it the next day.
