      Michael The Filmmaker Dude It's not dumb at all. Where's the detective and the femme fatale? The only things it has in common with neo noir is the lighting and the anti hero. It has the style of a neo noir, but it isn't one,

    • @alexhodgkinson6718
      @alexhodgkinson6718 7 лет назад

      Michael The Filmmaker Dude The definition of both noir and neo noir are debatable, but I've found that the most common is the typical detective crime thriller with femme fatales and a lack of morality, with low key lighting and shadows. Usually neo noir is the same but in colour and with fluorescent lighting, or just a new noir film. There's nothing official, though, and the definition is subjective, but most of the films in this list fit the most common definition of neo noir. Let's not forget that 'neo' literally translates to 'new'.

    While his films don't lend to the tropes of classic film noir, Michael Mann absolutely defined modern neo noir with his slick style, dimensional yet flawed characters, and fascinating dynamics between cops and criminals. Films like Thief, Manhunter, Heat, & Collateral all have a valid right to vye for inclusion in some of the best work in the neo noir genre.

      It sort of fits into almost every category in film (Western, Noir, crime, action, art house, romance, drama, even horror at one point), so I can kind of see how some can say its not a neo noir, but I still think it is. An accurate list, as usual. I just missed Christopher Nolan's works. Insomnia is a complete neo-noir movie, which uses contradictorily 'daylight' as a background. However, it takes part of the plot, as you may recall. And the Dark Knight Trilogy. A pretty dark neo-noir saga. You've managed to put Sin City on the list...

  • @drakonlorek1430

    Great list and great genre. I would probably would take off Seven and put on Memento. Was not expecting to see Mulholland Drive but it's one of my favs and could be interchangeable with Blue Velvet. Wish there was more Neo Noir in general. A shame there is only english language movies on this list tho, there are many great foreign Neo Noir as well, enough for another top 10. Oh, and fuck yeah Roger Rabbit!

      don't know where you heard that Taxi driver is considered the beginning of neo-noir but it's not true at all.😂 neo-noir was around in the early 60s and even the French Connection came out in '71

    You merely mentioned Body Heat, but it is the epitome of the neo-noir. Filled with dialogue that crackles, a femme fatal who is the epitome of womanhood--you named Darryl Hannah's robot--and a male lead who is as gullible as Bogart was in the Maltese Falcon. Oh, and they substitute sweat for constant moody rain.

    • @johnnybmean74

      Didn't it rip off quite a bit from Double Indemnity & The Postman Always Rings Twice?

    • @WilAdams
      @WilAdams 2 года назад

      @@johnnybmean74 No. I mean, unless you count having a beautiful woman hooking up with a young sex (and gullible) man, or the woman being greedy to the point that she wants her rich husband dead. It actually, IMPROVES on those stories because in Postman the main attraction is the young woman attracted in a sexual way to the younger more virile man. In Body Heat from the moment you first see her, Maddy already has, not only her plan to rid herself of her cruel and rich husband, but she has already picked out the stooge who will make her plan a reality. In Double, Phyllis comes to the relationship without a plan, and the idea slowly comes to her. Maddy is--as one of the characters describes her--relentless, and the audience comes to see her that way by the end of the film. Along the way, you never suspect what is going on until the writer spells it out in a brief conversation between the Stooge and a guy he knows and encounters in a bar by accident.
