    As a native South Australian, welcome to the best place in the world.
    Adelaide is a country town compared to the majority of cities around the world but that is what I like about it. It is reasonably quiet and not very crowded.
    Remember to always wear sunscreen and a hat every day, during summer it is advisable to avoid being outdoors in the middle of the day.
    I hope you enjoy your visit and remember that life is too short to take it seriously, so have fun because nothing else truly matters.

    Port Elliot was a great little spot I stayed at way back in 1996. I don't think it's there now but there used to be a motel called the Cavalier Inn run by Bill who was pretty much the best host ever. He ran the whole place by himself and I've never forgotten how hospitable he was. He even turned some rough opal I had into an expensive triplet set on his own equipment. I wish I knew where he ended up.

    I live near Port Elliot and you missed the best parts of Victor Harbor and Goolwa. The wharf at Goolwa has a paddle steamer and was a major port for South Australia on the River Murray. The mouth of the Murray is nearby and is the end of Australia’s longest river.
    Port Elliot has an amazing bay called Horseshoe Bay and Victor Harbor has tourist trains as well as a horse drawn tram that takes you across a bridge to a coastal island called Granite Island which has fairy penguins.

      @RobNMelbourne 19 дней назад +2

      Yeah, it throws me sometimes. I notice Mado twists the Vs and Ws around as in the "wibe in Varrnambool". Must be due to her German education.
      And Glen's Irish accent ... "the voibe at the poie shop is really noice". You can see how that got into the Aussie lingo.
      Doesn't bother me at all, just part of multicultural Aus. I've owned a few 'WV' cars in my life. 😁

    The Bullock wagons were how the remote towns got their supplies. You will come across some of those towns where the streets are so wide to allow the wagons to turn around. At the western end of the Nullabore you'll come across Norsman and you'll be blown way at how wide the main road through the town is.I get drunk on your joy and enthusiasm at the sunrise and the day and the night and everything inbetween. Keep it up, it's intoxicating.

    Fun fact. The railway station in Albury New South Wales was 2 miles long as all the trains used to have to stop and unload all the cargo, etc and load it onto trains going into Victoria because the lines in Victoria were a wider gauge. There was a customs building where customs duties had to be paid on all goods entering Victoria. All passengers would dismount from the New South Wales trains and board the Victorian trains, and vice versa. Originally the different states (colonies) were like different countries with their own army and navy, laws, etc.

    Not sure if you are planning to drive to Darwin, but if so, beware of road trains, kangaroos, extreme heat and dust. Take lots of water (20 litres min) and be very careful where you camp. As you get over the border, all kinds of large animals can be on the road. Don't stop for strangers; let the locals do that. Take good shoes, insect repellant and a sturdy straw hat. Also check that your mobile service works on the Stuart Highway. Telstra is best. The roadhouses are mostly stingy with their tap water, if you are just passing through. Former Territorian. PS. Good places north of Alice to camp are The Devils Marbles Hotel, Daly Waters Pub, Bitter Springs Cabins and the Lazy Lizard. Quorn, Marla, Erldunda and Stuart's Well Pub are best to the south. Spuds at Pimba is ok, but not many people there in the summer and noisy trains and trucks at night.

    Can't believe you didn't see the bush ranger and the ostrich statue . You can sit on the ostrich. I know this sounds weird but you would love the story it is so weird. A midget bushranger would attack people while riding on the back of an ostrich. His stolen golf is still out in the bush somewhere. If you look up Milang bushrangers and ostrich you should find the story. Plus when going to Darwin camp at Elliott at the Longreach lagoon. Turn left at cattleyards north of town 10 km dirt road. As always, a great analysis. Newcomers often wonder if it's too late to navigate the financial market, but the market is always unpredictable. Trading has more advantages than simply holding, so it's important to learn before diving in. Active trades are necessary to ride the market's waves. Thanks to Andrew Noah insights, daily trade signals, and my dedication to learning, I've been increasing my daily earnings, managed to grow a nest egg of around 140k to a decent 632k. BUT at Victor Harbor you missed walking over the long bridge to Granite island. so sorry you missed that - the views are lovely and in the correct season you might even see a baby whale swimming with it's mother whale close to Granite island

    Definitely soaking up the local experience.

    Lol! The Port Elliot bakery, is typically a bakery, just to pass by, but the thing about theses country towns, the beauty is really I the country side & the beaches,
    There's a nice little beach called second Valley, jts a bit of a drive, but the country side is nice .. after not being in Adelaide for years , I forgot how flat it was lol, there is so much sky ! I just grew up there young. Just smoked and lived a chill beach lofe, but yeah the towns don't have slot to offer in terms of atmosphere haha , & if you didn't already realise, there's slot of old people in victor Harbor, alot of retired people, young people typically move elsewhere for opportunities and lkfe experience, it looks different to i thought and , I did always thought pt Elliot bakery was subpar, the veggie pasties are OK, but there's not many options, and that's the best I that area lol, so ywah jt gets busy for thag reason ,
    After working in a French bakery, in Melbourne, their pastry looked .. Frozen , I'd be surprised if they made that, and it's just a casing for the filling lol

    I wonder why Victor Harbor is spelt the American way and not the proper English/Australian way of 'Harbour'.
    Can any Sth Australian explain?

    • @geoffoconnor3487
      @geoffoconnor3487 15 дней назад

      Long story short. Spelling used to vary quite a lot before dictionaries helped regularise it. Dr Johnson chose to use -our endings for nouns that came from French like harbour and valour, but -or endings for those that came directly from Latin like tremor. But in the early 19th Century, Noah Webster's dictionaries, which were in common use in Australia, changed them all to -or. Both spellings were used in newspapers and elsewhere. The first Concise Oxford Dictionary (1911) gradually became the accepted authority over the next 20 years or more, and the old convention of Dr Johnson prevailed.
      But the Labor Party did not change its spelling and some war memorials in Australia have inscriptions spelt valor and honor. Not just in SA.

      Sth Australians use the English/Australian spelling for most ‘our’ words, Victor Harbour being the main exception.
