The buried mine shaft goes in about 20 feet and makes right angle turn to the left and goes for another 15 feet. The tunnel never gets higher then 4 feet. It has been buried for 25 to 30 years

You can still get in there. It's been years since I crawled in, but it is just as you described. The tree that marked it's location is gone.

When I was growing up in Delta Colorado, us kids used to hunt for Mica and sell it to the Rock Shop. We didn't get much but enough for candy and the movies 😎 It cost 25 cents to go to a movie sometimes 10 cents they would show kid movies on a Bus.😎

The Gorgas Run Trail is open as of September, 2020. It runs from Gorgas Lane (street parking only, no lot) to the Forbidden Drive on the west bank of the Wissahickon Creek.
The Wissahickon Schist Formation dominates this section of Philadelphia and can be found as far south as Maryland. It is strictly metamorphic and approximately one-half billion years old. It is highly unlikely that significant gold deposits exist in it. The sparkly mica flecks and the schist are the product of clay silt being baked at high temperatures at great depths for millions of years.
On Google Maps the mine is marked as "Gorgas Creek Cave", up the north bank of the Gorgas Creek. IMO it's not worth the attempt to crawl in - Mother Nature is relentlessly filling it with silt and leaves. What IS interesting is the geologic folding that is obvious at the mouth of the cave - it is clear some of the metamorphic layers are curling under themselves. There are other places along the Forbidden Drive facing the Wissahickon Creek where this folding is also evident.

Glad you didn't squeeze into that other entrance by yourself. Sets a sensible example I reckon. Love the mica. Makes me want to find some myself :) Lovely to see so many people out enjoying themselves walking along the road there. Thanks for sharing.

This so much for showing this place. Those rocks in the creek bed are awesome. I have a picture of my grandmother standing in front of a decaying old building in wissihickon in 1914. Did you come across any old buildings on this trail? They may have fallen down by now. Loved all the info you gave.

The views of the rocks came out great! I believe Mica was used as a window on round kerosene heaters so that the operator could see the quality of the flame and to let light out from the heaters

I looked in that place to find a part layered in red candle wax. I left worried that it was used as some kind of ritual cite
