There’s no better guitar than the one that makes you want to play on it ;)
Love your guitar and your playing
Nice
Your SJ sounds fantastic. My Woody Guthrie SJ I bought in 2014 I think, has really blossomed. I loved it from the get go but now after a few years its just more or a good thing
Thanks!! .. question: Are the signature Gibson's like Guthrie SJ considered custom shop guitars?
Subscribed! That Southern Jumbo sounds beautiful I hope you will just play us some beautiful instrumental tunes!
I bought the Sheryl Crow model SJ aback in 2015. It has an Adirondack top , Waverly OB tuners and a slightly different bracing of the top. Great sound and playability . The price was great too as I gather they weren’t selling well - not sure why though. They had an option for a (very) high price pickup used by SC which I passed on for a KK pickup.
Those are great guitars! Tried searching for one a while back and they're hard to find now, didn't know they ever had issues selling when new.
@@acousticmusicnthings Yes it is. Also, they used a teardrop pick guard so that wasn't an issue. The Adirondack top has no discernible headroom limit, but some think it is better suited for pick only. The saddle is an open (slide through?) style ( not sure why?) . Also the braces are all finely scalloped. I enjoy your reviews !
@@rzh3443 thank you! I have a couple with that open saddle slot and I'm not much of a fan. Other than that I think you're SJ sounds about perfect. I might pick one up if I've comes along. Although it's almost time to start rotating out some guitars haha.
Me too -- 2015 SG SJ "Supreme". Great guitar!!
I bought a J45 standard this year. Within the first few weeks I change the nut, saddle and bridge pins to bone. The pins are unslotted and I had the bridge slotted. Installed EJ17 strings on it. Also took out the stock pickup and installed a K&K Pure Mini so the under saddle is gone for a better saddle to bridge sound transfer for straight acoustic. Guitar became very responsive. Easy to dig in for the bass.
That's awesome! Great upgrades for sure!
I’m surprised it doesn’t come with the bone nut and saddle.
I been watching your vids recently. As a player myself goin on almost 30 years I finally got myself a 45 Standard 22 model. Action is a little high but im getting that taken care of. rest of it is perfect beyond words haha.. keep up the content man. really can tell you been playing a while and its also your passion! keep rocking..btw just realized you have same pickup that i put in mine too. good choice!
Thanks man, I appreciate it. Congrats on that j45. These are awesome guitars for sure.
@@acousticmusicnthings i literally couldn't resist and decided to just go through with it and bought a hummingbird original woohoo
Yes Amazing SJ!!! I Just commented on another one of your videos.. (AJ vs J45 custom, vs SJ) and I mentioned my love for my AJ.. but I think I'd rather have a SJ or Hummingbird..
This video is exactly why!! Man I really love a Gibson Round Shoulder, Mahogany back and sides acoustic!! Long story short lol.. I'm a Gibson guy 100% and I prefer Mahogany over Rosewood. Lol Man you're a lucky guy!! Such a beautiful and Beautiful sounding SJ!!
The only thing I've done to my AJ is I ordered some new Bone Bridge Pins and on 2 of the pins I have my Initials.. lol.. M.P.
I'd really love to have a SJ!! 🤘
Really enjoyed hearing about your mods and the tone of your SJ. Great Video!
Thank you!
The only thing I've done to my AJ is I bought some new Bone Bridge Pins and 2 of the pins have my initials on them. Lol.. maybe it's a bit corny but I don't think I've ever seen anyone else with personalized Bridge Pins. Lol.. Man I sure do love your SJ!! I really enjoy watching your channel and the many Guitars you display. #OnlyAGibsonIsGoodEnough 🤘
killer SJ sir. I am considering getting one of those new original series one or maybe a J45.
would be interesting to check out your pedal board and pickup as well. cheers!
Thanks man! The pick up is the baggs anthem, and at the moment my pedal board mostly consist of the Boss A.D. 10, fender, smolder, Digitech mosaic, boss reverb and EQ.
@@acousticmusicnthings awesome thanks
i’d like to do the exact same things to my SJ how hard was it to get the pickguard off and did it really buff out fully? also did those golden age slide right in place of the grover’s ?
thanks
The Picard came off quite easily with a hairdryer and some naphtha/ lighter fluid. very easy. And I did it while my guitar was new so there wasn’t much to buff out. The tuners were an exact drop and replacement and also very easy to do.
Good morning from Lowell. I got mine in 2021, too. Just love it. I would really like to see how you changed the pick guard. Did you get yours from the good folks in Ft. Wayne?
I sure did get it from Sweetwater! I used naptha and a plastic scraper and just slowly worked it off. Then used a micro fiber cloth and my thumb to rub off the extra adhesive. Took maybe 15 minutes. Lots of videos and instructions on how to do it. Just take your time. Post a video of it if you haven't!
I have a D28cw with the Hutt ugly dalmatian pick guard. I would love to change but over years have become a stickler to keep guitars original. Now in the marker for a J45 or an SJ. Like you I don't like the big pick guard. I really wish they would sell this guitar without a pick guard. Thank you for your helpful video.
When you swapped out the tuners did the new ones just drop in or did you need to drill new holes? Im loving my SJ original but the tuners keep bugging me because they’re not period correct. If it was an easy swap could you give a link to the tuners you installed. Thanks.
Golden age replica tuners. Super easy and no holes. Gotoh makes nicer ones. Look for the screw down post style.
I wonder if a J-45 pick guard would match the rosette of the SJ.
Let me ask,the Elements pickup system was already installed?I bought my SJ in 2023,it came with VTC,which is not so good.I got Elements on my J-200,it sounds much better.
No, it came with the VTC. I installed the anthem because I do not like the VTC.
Sounds gorgeous! What sz and type of strings ? Play it more please!
DR sunbeams 12-54. Some of my favorite strings
Do you think 13s are dangerous to use on a Southern Jumbo?@@acousticmusicnthings
Easy, cut the nut correct and the bridge with bone. Set the intunition 😊
Çok güzel bir video olmuş ❤️
Thanks!! .. question: Are the signature Gibson's like Guthrie SJ considered custom shop guitars?
I think they are
It made in 2021?like vintage saund.
What did your luthier do about the footprint the old guard left?
There wasn't one really. Just a couple lines that buffed out really fast.
Was there a tone difference by removing the big pickguard?
Maybe a little bit, when I had no Picard on it all I could feel a little bit more vibration from the top. But not an absolute huge tone difference, nothing that anybody would actually notice just listening in the room. Yet there was a little bit.
I also own a SJ original, and I’m not a big fan of the batwing pickguard either. When the luthier removed it, were you left with a shadow of the batwing pickguard or did it come off clean? Thank you.
It came off clean but I did it when it was brand new and no wear yet. Good luck, let me know how it turns out!
@@acousticmusicnthings mine was produced at the factory in November of last year. Hopefully, it will come off clean. Thank you, again.
@@BellaDucatista I hope so too! Are you removing it all or replacing with something else?
@@acousticmusicnthings replacing it with a banner/j-45 pickguard. Also, looking into different tuners. I’m really into the vintage button tuners. Subscribed!
What pedals are you using in your rig?
There's a Boss AD10, and then various effects. Most used are a boss reverb, and the mosaic twelve string pedals. I don't use them in the videos, but maybe I'll review a few if those soon!
@@acousticmusicnthings I have an AER 60 and am looking for a few pedals to thicken the sound.
@@jnb72 what kind of guitar and pickup? If you're just looking to make it sound more acoustic, if just start with a good preamp and the bodyrez.
@@acousticmusicnthings I have some nice ones SJ 200 and J45. Have the Anthem and Element and VTC. Just picked up a strymon flint and would like to add a delay. Do I still need a preamp?
@@jnb72 not really, but the bodyrez and an EQ will round out that undersaddle pickup and get rid of those sounds you don't like. The piezo quack if you will.
