- In 1992, English aristocrat Jessica Mitford wrote a letter to friend and fellow author Maya Angelou, after an encounter with a member of the Royal family.
Louise Brealey joined us to read this letter at Letters Live at the Royal Albert Hall, in October 2022.

Jessica Mitford woke up and chose violence 😂
From that letter, I don't think she woke up and chose violence. I'm pretty sure it was always with her as a constant companion. ;)
The title really took me by surprise. I never knew the two interacted with each other.
Louise Brealey is such a treasure, so awesome
Well there is a saying….You can be so far up yourself you are almost inside out. This clearly applies to Ms Mitford. Read impeccably by Louise.
She was a former Communist Party member, who was a civil rights protester (her husband was a lawyer in the field), and she wrote an important book criticising the American funeral industry for unscrupulous and predatory practices. She may have been born into the aristocracy, but boy, did she turn against all that!
Preaching to the choir I’m completely aware of her life’s story and that of hers sisters. Sometimes perception doesn’t pay
I'm enjoying these readings but are you ever going to post Daisy Ridley's reading from October 2021? I"ve been waiting to listen to that for a long time.
So that's where the "Lizard People Alien Royalty" rumors comes from....
Aristocrats they may have been, but by all accounts, there did not exist a more motley, socialist, self-indulgent or renegade bunch of women. They were notorious, and I found Mitford's criticism of Princess Margaret to be rather hypocritical from what I've read. I also noticed an error in the reading where Ms. Brealey refers to HRH Margaret as HRH Anne.
Louise says 'Princess M' but it does sound a little like Princess Anne. Thanks for watching!
@@LettersLive Thanks for that! Must be my old ears.....
Erm... have you read much about the Mitford sisters? You're going to have to REALLY loosen up your definition of "socialist' when you get to Diana and Unity... Decca was very against upper-class values in a very active sense, so I'm also not sure about the "hypocritical" bit - but ok.
@@karenburrows9184 Mine too! I could have sworn that she said Princess Anne. Now I have to watch and listen again…
@@dontbefatuousjeffrey2494 Well, Diana and Unity were both fascists: Diana married Oswald Mosley and Unity thought Hitler wonderful until World War 2 started and then shot herself when she realised what he was really like! Fascinating family; well worth reading the biography.
What is the monster of Gloms? The Monster of Glamis? Or the monster of glumse quark cheese?
Well, Mrs. Mitford certainly knows how to identify snobbery and unctuousness. Maybe her mirror is her tutor...
Look her up. She LOATHED all that stuff. Lived most of her life marching as firmly away from it as she could!
