Great video! I used to be co-curator of the Social History collection in Whitby Museum and the Hand was part of that collection...I absolutely detest it! I live in the house that William Scoresby lived in when he first came to Whitby, also known as Scoresby House, built in 1760, the year he was born. It stands on the harbour on the East side. In the adjoining yard he installed a pump for a well. It's in the Scoresby Room at the Museum and says something along the lines of "Draw water and drink, but don't stand around gossiping." 😂

I visited Whitby way back in 1997 with my girlfriend ( we live in Melbourne / Aus) we had a hire car and traveled to Goathland and they were filming an episode of ‘ HeartBeat’ ( one of my favourite UK TV series) it’s a magnificent port and here in Melbourne we have the historical captain Cooks cottage in the splendid Fitzroy Gardens and it is very small yet so quant!
Within 30 seconds of the start I knew I was in for a professional production, and you delivered. Amazing work. Really interesting. Thank you very much.
I missed this latest video, we were visiting our son in Singapore. I watched a TV show, Yorkshire by the Sea, and that woke my grey cells up and came looking for Andrew's videos again. Up at Helmsley for a few days at the start of September - our wedding anniversary, we honeymooned in Helmsley. We will certainly be visiting a few places.
As always Andrew, a great video. Been way too long since our last one hoping it’s not as long before the next one. We love Whitby too but I have to say much of what you covered in this video I didn’t know so it was fascinating to learn such things. Two other things - The Sunod of Whitby in 664 was held to decide the Christian calendar gor feast days etc between the old Celtic Church ways and the newer Roman calendar. Next thing John Fryer Keane sailor explorer adventurer wrote his account / travelogue "Six months in the Mecca" it came out serialised in one of the London evening newspapers and scandalised the population all at the late 1800's - Keane was born in Whitby

One of the surviving Witch Posts is in the village of Marske. It's located in the village's museum which is house one of the few surviving cruik cottages

Just returned from a trip to Whitby, and this pops up on youtube, Spooky. Very busy for Halloween, plenty of Witches, Ghouls, Goths and even a family of Ghostbusters. Love the old- fashioned museum and its Cabinets of Curiosity. I hope they never modernise it.

he wrote some in the royal hotel in whitby, I Know there was a guest house where he stayed on Royal Crescent, he wrote some of Dracula in a hotel in Scotland too. There is conflicting info saying where he started it. I always got told it was the royal hotel as he came up with the idea because of the view on a cold misty night looking at whitby abbey
Great video - instructive and fun - must have taken a ton of work to make. The AI that generated some of the ship images made some mildly amusing mistakes (bowsprits at both ends of the ship) but that's not a criticism and I learned a lot from the video.
The candle on a Hand of Glory could only be extinguished with milk. Anyone awake in the household would remain awake and those asleep could not be roused.

How can you invent the crows nest, the idea that in thousands of years nobody climbed the mast and looked out is ridiculous.
But not the idea of a physical structure to enclose and protect the lookout.
