    Great video; very informative.
I've had the EGO 21" push mower (LM2100) for three mowing seasons now. I cut my St. Augustine lawn once a week on the 4 setting with the mulching insert (only in the Fall do I drop the mowing level and use the bag to try and get up some leaves as I mow), and the mower regularly leaves random, long blades of grass in nearly every pass. Those long blades are not where the wheels rolled over the grass and pushed it down. I've tried walking faster and walking slower, to no avail. I end up pulling the mower back and forth across the same spots when I see the longer blades, but I still have stragglers when I finish. Very annoying.
I'll try a high lift blade and report the improvement (if any). I may also try dropping the cutting level to 3, but I really don't want to cut my grass any shorter in the Houston heat. I agree that at the mower's price point, EGO ought to include a high life blade. Wonder if I can put the dual blade on the Model 2100; has anyone tried this?
I otherwise love the mower. It's quiet and light weight. I have 3 other EGO tools that use the same, 5A 56V battery, all of which I also love. All are light weight and well made.

I've had my EGO for less than two months and I'm in the same boat with St. Augustine grass and stragglers when I finish. I really notice it when I'm in the pool and the grass is closer to eye level. There is a video online where a guy "retrofitted" the select cut dual blade set onto the LM2100 model. I may give it a try at some point. Link: ruclips.net/video/hN5uLbiyT2M/видео.html

Regardless of what it says on the package, you CAN use the high lift blade for mulching. You just have to use the self propelled models and a 7.5 battery. The self propelled models have a stronger motor than the non self propelled models.

Yep, I just got my mower this year, started with new sod, and have the exact same problem. At first I thought, well I'm starting off the new sod at higher than normal lengths and making my way lower, but once I get to regular height, this shouldn't be a problem.
But it is still a problem on a 3. I basically have to re-mow the whole lawn or overlap 80% in the other direction to overcome this issue.

I recently purchased the ego 2100sp and agree that it does a poor job of cutting grass high. It does a terrible job of mulching leaves. It doesn't lift the leaves up - just mows right over top of them. I'll try the high lift blade even though I don't want to bag leaves but prefer mulching.

Just put the EGO Premium Bagging Tri-Cut factory blade set onto the GEN 2 SP 21" mower (the two blade-locking nuts & bolts is not compatible to fit on GEN 2 SP which means less weight and longer runtime) to replace the current mulching + High Lift "X" blade configuration and the mulching result is great. It gives similar airlift as the High Lift blade (1 1/4" ~ 1 3/4" rear door lift) but not producing as much airlift as the mulching + High Lift "X" blade setup (3"~4" rear door lift, extremely dusty at sandy area); however, the battery runtime is now the same as running the High Lift blade along (10% increase). I like how fine the Tri-Cut blades is able to mulch the grass so the nutrients can go back into the ground quickly. I may try the combination of the standard mulching blade + Premium Bagging Tri-Cut blade and see how they would work together or maybe 2 X Premium Bagging Tri-Cut "X" blades! Both sittings will decreasing the first and second blade cutting distance down from 3/4" to 1/4". Most important thing is: I don't need to buy the newer model to get the same benefit :-D .

I have had two EGO lawnmowers, the first was the steel deck that ended up failing under warranty, and the other the same model used here that was sent as a replacement for my discontinued, under warranty steel deck model. I found on the steel deck model that there is almost no lift and I always had to take two passes to get a decent cut on level 3 (yeah, what I called long hairs but love your Mohawk description). The new mower came with the high lift blade which performs better than the steel deck basic blade version. However, I still need to make two passes if I let my lawn grow more than a week between cuts during the growing season, which is long in California, and sometimes even at one week intervals during the height of the growing season.
I've been spoiled with my previous Snapper High Vac models in the past, but even a cheap mower that I was using prior to purchasing my EGO easily outperformed both of my EGOs. This appears to me to be mostly a blade issue as the wings on the EGO blades are nearly non-existent on the standard blade, and still pretty nominal on the high lift blade. This I'm sure is done to reduce blade drag and increase battery run time while mowing. This could also explain the reason that raising the mower will increase the issue as the area for air to pass into the deck from below grows substantially. This creates less contact with the lawn and less suction since the air flow is distributed over a greater face surface area.
For me, this equates to much more work when I mow the lawn, even with the extra convenience that comes with an EGO mower as you explain in your video. Thanks for your review and the work you've put into examining the issues and benefits of this product.

Just came across this video. I purchased my Ego in the Spring of 2019 to replace an old Lawn Boy that I had that lasted me over 25 years. I like to mow high and never really noticed that the stock blade didn't have the lift at the higher settings but one day I'm walking on my lawn and noticed the matted down grass and when I raked it up it would stand up very high and that's when I realized it was the blade which did not cut well at the 4, 5, and 6 settings and cut better on the 3 setting but not great. In the fall I purchased the high lift blade after seeing some youtube videos and yes it does a better job but at the 5 and 6 settings not so much what I've noticed with my high lift blade is that at the 3 and 4 settings it works very well. A friend of mine has the Toro battery powered lawn mower and we swapped mowers and used the stock blades on each just to compare and I noticed the Toro battery powered mower did a much better job at the higher settings than the Ego did. That being said, I have no problems with my Ego mower and I am happy I purchased it. I have 5000 square feet of lawn and it does it with battery power to spare.

Thanks for the review on the High Lift blade. I also have a GEN 2 SP unit and used the High Lift blade for improved cut. It was better but not as much as I wish for as well. So I decided to try Honda Micro Cut blade configuration with the mulching blade as the upper first grass contact blade, than the washer and than the High Lift blade as the lower second grass contact blade installed slightly behind the first blade to create the Honda "Micro Cut" or EGO "Select Cut" effect to chew up the grass into smaller pieces. Of course it does drain the battery power faster but the cut is fantastic with no grass clumps at all (thus zero blowing required) since the lift is incredibly strong. I just ordered the new EGO Premium Tri-Cut High Lift Bagging/Mulching blade yesterday from Home Depot and hoping that it will fit as well as it will be a lighter configuration to get the same result while save some battery life.

How did the new blade work for you?

    • @Jeo-What
      @Jeo-What 4 года назад

Rick Marquardt This sets of blades worked out very well. Especially now the fall is coming and the grass is growing again. Compared with the highlift blade combined with the standard blade comes with this set, the high lift blade combination has more suction which is fine when the grass is long but chews up grass in finer pieces which allow the grass to decompose faster to achieve the mulching feature more affectively. I would used the combination of standard and highlift blade during summer drought time to cut the grass as high as possible but all the other seasons this set will be perfectly fine.

Interesting! Thanks for mentioning this! I own a Honda dual blade so called mulching mower and it sucks. Uneven cuts, clumping, packing the material underneath (not dropping/forcing it back to the ground), etc. I was looking at the Ego Dual Blade Select Cut to replace the Honda, but given the mixed results I am reading about I am not sure about laying out another $500 on a new mower with the same issues as the Honda!

I bought one last summer. I find that it does not cut as well as my gas mower. I have a smaller yard, so I go over it in the opposite direction and it cleans up really good. I really do like how quiet it is and the ease of using it. I’ve never once had people have me stop cutting with the gas mower and ask me about it, but it happened almost every time I was using the EGO.

My Ego mower came with 4 blades. Mulching and High lift were included. I read where adding some weight on the front end would help with the grass Mohawk. I really dislike that part of mowing with the Ego, not enough lift to cut like a gas powered one. But there’s more pro’s than con’s with the Ego.

Two things, keep the bottom of the mower clean for better air flow and run the travel speed slightly slower than your walk. When you do that you keep the front down. It seems that raising the front breaks the suction required for lift.

Thank you for this review. I am using my EGO mower for commercial use. I noticed the uneven cutting from the self propel right away. It is almost as though you can go up one hight setting just by engaging the rear wheel drive. I believe that this is because of flexibility in the metal axles. All of the plastic parts are very rigid, but the metal parts were not so well designed in R&D. The individual height settings at all four wheels would solve this problem, making this part of the mower more rigid.
As for not vacuuming all that well. I too am disappointed. With fall just around the corner, I may have to go back to my gas mower for leaf season if the high lift blade doesn't work out. Also, maybe I might weld a couple of wings on the high lift blade adding drag to the motor and forcing it to the high RPM setting. I think it is this "energy efficient" mode that is preventing the quality of the cut.

Been using mine for a while now. Got it this spring. I cut at a 1 or 2 when it's really hot and I love the way it looks. I even use mine to mow over light to moderate brush and it has never broken down or caused an issue. I do keep a spare blade that's a little beat up for the brush and bought a secondary 3 in 1 blade as I like the way it mulches and cuts. I am looking forward to see how the mower performs on leaves come the fall.
I have not had the same issues noted in the video but I believe that is because I cut my lawn fairly short. I am pleased with my purchase and will likely look to get additional tools in the future once my gas string trimmer bites the dust.
Thanks for the video and happy mowing!

I picked up the 56 volt 21" self propelled. (Not the pro package, next one down.) Came with 1 battery, 550 watt charger and all 3 blades. Don't know it they are "premium" or not, these are bright green. I am changing to the hi-lift blade today. (To see if it can pick up all the leaves after a wind storm.) It came with the mulch blade installed. The 3rd blade was an extended performance, very little wing, but looks a lot like the premium mulch you had in you hand. I do love the mower. I bought it with the caveat that the higher the cut, the less pickup. 5 is just too high. I would never go over 4. I will be at 3 when I try to vacuum the front yard.

Thanks! I was all set to buy an Ego, because of all the awards and best of sites/reviews.... Well, as I dig deeper I am finding more and more issues like the one you mentioned. Questions: What about the mulching mowers/blades of models like Select Cut? One reviewer said they solved the problem of poor uneven cuts and excessive clumping with the addition of the 2nd blade, much like Honda did with theirs. This is aimed at mulching, in particular. I prefer mulching over messing around with bags, and besides...I don't fertilize to through the grass away---I want it back on the lawn to recycle the nutrients! I own a Honda gas self propel and it is awful even with the dual blades. Engine is great--no complaints there. But the cut and clumping are beyond frustrating! In fact the "fix" for Honda owners (on various forums) complaining of poor mulching and clumping is to remove the upper blade! So, can you tell me what, if anything, you have found/know/tested with the mulching Ego mowers? I am regretting I gave up my '80's Toro self propelled mulching/bagging mower. The new Toro's don't measure up which is why I bought the Honda, and have been very unhappy with it for 5 years. I moved and the lawn is smaller....but very thick/lush fine blade fescues --- which want to lay down as the blade approaches and what is cut just clumps and plugs the mower. (yes, new sharp blades, not tall grass, not mowing in rain, walk slow, over mow (1/2 overlap each cut). So, I am ready for a new mower and was very seriously considering Ego, but I am having 2nd thoughts. When I shell out $500 to $600 for a mower...I expect a quality machine that at least does the job I bought it to do!! Thoughts?

I haven't tried EGO's new Select Cut mower so I can't speak to it's performance but I jimmy rigged a second blade onto my Peak Power mower shortly after the Select Cut mower came out just to see what difference it made, if any, and it did cut better but it was also cutting shorter than with a single blade. Adding the 2nd blade on it added about 1/2 inch to the depth of the cut and the shorter you cut the better it looks. Overall I'm very happy with the cut I get on the 3 height setting and lower with a single blade and I always mulch my lawn. Like you I want the fertilizer I put on to go back into the soil rather than bag it up and throw it away. It's only on the 4 and higher settings I feel the cut quality with the EGO leaves more to be desired.

I have the newest Ego dual blade sp mower and was very impressed with the way it cut at the settings 1-3. Settings 4+ did leave some taller blades behind. When mowing higher I found mowing forward and then pulling back over the same patch left the grass looking great, but that does require hitting the same spot twice. Note: it looked the best going forward and then pulling it back over the same patch rather than mowing in one direction and turning around and mowing over it in the opposite direction. I ‘m getting ready to dethatch for overseeding, so I had my husband use his gas mower and bag any grass the Ego didn’t pick up. I am happy to report the gas mower didn’t have very much to pick up after. Lastly, I am disappointed with the quality of the mower blades, as they seem to get chipped up and become dull pretty quickly. (I try not to run over too many sticks!) I’m not sure if a different brand of blade would hold up better or if it is even advisable to try that. Thanks for the video!

It is to replace my current dual blade setup (mulching + High Lift blade) to get more run time of the battery. If the dual blade won't fit (which I believe it will based on my observation at Home Depot store) I will take it apart and use the Premium Tri-Cut High Lift Bagging/Mulching blade by itself. Yeah, I the same issues with my Ego and will be seeing if the HiLift blade helps. I have however Mae West grass. A fine grass that likes to lay down. Like you though I'm not missing the getting gas, gassing the mower, Stabilizer, oil changes, yanking a cord to start, then doing it again because I had to move something or pick something up.

I have fine blade fescue lawn; thick, too. If you sneeze the grass lays over! Can't even hardly use a trimmer around the tight areas or along the fence. Most reviews, I believe, are done with various perennial rye and Kentucky grasses that stand up better so laying down and clumping when you are trying to mow isn't as much a problem. I wish reviewers would compare machines on various types of grass, because it does make a difference what you are mowing! :)

Yup love my EGO, had it 3 years now… but the bent over strips leaving mow hawks every which way drives me nuts…. I grew up using a riding mower or a gas honda push mower.. that thing you could run over leafs that were even kinda wet and it would suck them up no problem.. if you were weeding flower beds before you mow you could throw the pulled weeds into the grass and the mower would just suck it up….. the EGO definitely isn’t sucking anything up however… i looked for a blade with the biggest winglets at the end (the part that creates the suction / lift … luckily the deck on the EGO has a nice deep tonal so even the most aggressive lifting blade I could find had no problem with clearance… night and day difference

Ironically, 2 good features (light weight and single lever for cut height) may be conspiring against a good cut at higher heights. Add some weight up front, or drop the front wheels to be lower than the back and it may help. But wheels can’t do that. Just curious on what people are trying to defeat the long handle leverage issue...

Just bought an EGO self-propelled yesterday, as my gas mower has been in the shop for 6 weeks and we are still waiting on a part. Needless to say, my grass was pretty tall and I immediately cut my grass after getting home. First cut on a 4, and had some uneven patches. I went back over it with a 2 and it looks fantastic. It mulches very well. No clumps of grass like my traditional mower left (that mower was purchased last year). I saw the high lift blade and wanted to know what exactly it did, which led me to this video. Thank you for such a detailed analysis.
My grass was a bit damp, and when I went to clean off the undercarriage, I could not get all of the grass off. Does anyone have a suggestion on a soft brush I could use to get at the stuck on grass?
Also, I heard that using silicone spray on the undercarriage helps. Is anyone doing this, and if so, what product atr you using?
I looked at various mowers at several big box stores, and after reading in Consumer Reports how well the entire EGO line performs (getting as high of a score as the traditional mowers), I decided on the EGO. I am very happy with my choice. I expect that the positive environmental impact, savings on gas and oil, as well as my annual service costs on the traditional mower will more than make the investment in EGO products (getting the string trimmer, blower and hedge cutter next) one of the smartest decisions I have made this year.

I suspect it will not mulch leaves well this fall, so maybe the high-lift blade will work better for that, despite not being intended for mulching? In eastern Washington State we have a mix of bluegrass and rye grass and I usually cut our lawn at a 3. I really like the way it looks at 2 but then it takes A LOT more water to keep it from burning up with how hot it gets in July and August (90's to over 100). I only cut it at a 5 when we get put under watering restrictions. Sometime we're only allowed to water 2 times a week, so to keep the lawn from dying during those times I cut it long which helps it fair better in the hot weather.

I put the mulching blade and the High Lift blade into HONDA MICRO CUT Blade configuration which has the same type of blades and it works great. I just ordered the new EGO Premium Tri-Cut High Lift Bagging/Mulching dual blade set yesterday from Home Depot and hoping that it will fit as well as it will get the same result as the new GEN 3 Select Cut SP. It should provide a better cut than the standard Hight Lift blade since it does have "Gator teeth" to help to mulch the grass into smaller pieces.

Excellent result as the LM2100SP's motor will spin between 165 MPH to 199.4 MPH depending on the resistance of the grass density while the LM2142SP though still the king of torque with 8.5ft-lb torque which is higher than the newest LM2156SP's 8.3ft-lb while using two 5.0Ah batteries (may be even higher when using two 7.5Ah or 10.0Ah) the motor spinning speed is between 165 MPH and 179 MPH which creates less air lift when needed. The torque, spinning speed and runtime may be the trade off difference between brushless and non-brushless motors as they are both 1000W motors.

I too noticed that the mower cut better at 3" instead of 4". The slow growing fescue doesn't require frequent mowing but does require mowing it high. Without a couple of passes, it often won't get sucked up. Because of the poor lift, I also end up with ridges of longer grass where the wheels have crushed it down. What’s the difference between ego and greed... NOTHING!! Ego shame on you guys for not giving us that extra blade. My only complaint is how greedy you guys are!! I can’t wait for completion because believe me this will change your quick! I’ve seen it in the past with other products. For now, I’ll just complain to all my friends and family members and my neighbors about his extra charge and how you nickel and dime me. And for that reason you get two thumbs down 👎👎

Longer grass is heavier and the mower, any mower, will have a harder time with it....

I’m not anal about my .75 acre look, have not seen anyone on the ground starring at it to notice when I have visitors...the self propelled is great, no gas no oil, that enough for me. Buy it or don’t...lol.

Lol! Haven't tried that yet but I imagine the high lift blade will slot into the potato category for gaming. 😂
