These aren't my favorite Abercrombie books, but all my favorite quotes come from them.
"What is the world coming to when an honest man cannot burn corpses without suspicion?"
@@WriterBren not sure if you've read any other Abercrombie before, but the man is a quote machine. All his best characters speak and think with a folksy, homespun nihilism that I can't get enough of.
This series was the first Abercrombie I read ages ago and I loved them.
The shattered sea series is low key amazing and I share it with everyone. Book 2 is my favorite, good luck and enjoy!!!
It's Viking-ish. I thought by Forgotten Stories that you were reading an unreleased stories and I was like "Why haven't heard of--oh it's Shattered Sea...carry on."
So glad you read this Merph. I too have been dying for more Abercrombie.
PS Just get the box set Merph. It's the only way to make sure they'll all match. You know you're going to buy them anyway.
This is very exciting for me because Half a King is the only Joe Abercrombie book I've ever read. I brought it years ago when I wasn't too into fantasy and had no idea who the author was. If this is supposed to be his most forgotten-about book, I can't wait to read the others! The only downside is that my copy of Half a King has a dull cover.
You definitely need to read Joe's the first law trilogy it's really good
@@angelaholmes8888 I definitely want to! Just waiting for it to be available at my local bookstore
Glad to see some light shined on this series! I read these 2 years ago and really enjoyed them. Like you, I feel they don't touch his other works, but they're still worth your time. I especially loved Half the World and Thorn's character. But I loved how at the end of the series, when Yarvi's compete character arc is realized, Abercrombie reminds you that despite this being a more plot-oriented type of storytelling, that this is still a book by Joe Abercrombie!
I love reading vlogs, and your thoughts are wonderful, as always.
LOVED, loved how the the sun shines on you on the last part!! Murphy's recommendations have never let me down!! doing to pick this up for sure!!
That trilogy is basically all I've read from Joe, and I loved it.
You definitely should give the blade itself a shot the first book in the first law universe
I've never heard of Joe Ambercrombie, but now that I watched this video, I want to read this trilogy immediately! You always give such great recommendations, thank you!
Very much excited anything from Joe!
I read this series a few years ago after the Blade Itself and while I didn't love the series, it was so addictive! I had a good experience and remember being really attached to Thorn and Brand. Also, I have rarely heard anyone talk about it, so I'm happy to see you giving it some attention.
The firs two books of this trilogy (and soon the third too) are the only books of him that I've read. Really liked the first and loved the 2nd, specially because of Thorn and Brand. Glad you had a blast.
I can’t wait for your next review of his work “the devils” when it comes out next year!
I CANNOT BELIEVE I own this book and have not read it! What? How? I must have bought it when it came out and decided to wait for the series to be completed and then forgot. Turns out my father-in-law and my Daughter have read it the one I bought and then got the other 2 from the library and read them!
SPOILERS!
so merphy I want to talk about my favourite thing but before that I should mention something I don't know if you realized or not, but this world is post apocalyptic. all of it actually happens in our world in scandinavia many centuries in the future where people started developing from the scratch and also there's NO magic in the books. when I finished the trilogy and thought about it I was shocked that I just read fantasy series without any magic in it.
so my favourite part is about firearms. the way joe describes shooting from gun in second and third books is truly genius. He does it SO realistically that I actually thought it was magic at first and only later realized what it actually was. he perfectly catches how medieval writer would describe shooting from a gun he just saw. I think this detail alone is peak of his writing
Thankyou for shining a light on another interesting new book :)
As soon as I saw this title, I wondered if this was the Half A series. The first 2 of these books are the only books of Joe Abercrombie's that I've read so far, and as someone who's been fairly out of the reading world for a bit and recently coming back by way of your channel and a few others, I've been continuously surprised by the fact that The First Law overshadows these books to the point where the discourse about his work seems to imply this trilogy doesn't exist.
Which has me very intrigued to pick up The First Law once I get through my current backlog of books I own but haven't read.
Rien que pour Brand et Epine, ces livres valent le coup ! Quand Epine confronte Hunnan, oh la la les frissons !
4:00 Woah... That hit deep.
I'm glad to see you talking about this series! I read it at the beginning of this year and had a blast with it, but nobody seemed to be reading it... I would love to hear you talk spoilers of this, specially about the third book.
This series is so underrated
I’d never heard of this wow 😮
The shattered sea trilogy is good
I think these were the first Abercrombies I read. Enjoyed them as far as I remember
I seriously considered Half a King after finishing Wisdom of Crowds but I instead ventured into the Dresden Files and am now on book 4 there.
I love watching you react to books I adore. Which is why I'm running this campaign for you read FABLES (Vertigo Comics)...
Murph first of all greetings from Argetina! I have read almost all of Joe's works, my first contact with him was through a friend who recommended the first law to me. But in Argentina they are difficult to find, so my first reading by Joe was the trilogy corresponding to half a king. The reality is that it is not a saga oriented to the Viking world, in fact they are books designed for a younger audience. Anyway, the saga is very good, I admit that the last book is the one I liked the least, but it's still Joe... I hope you enjoy them and thank you for your content!
I love this series!!! Ive read it all twice :)
Those covers!! Amazing. I've only read the epub version sadly :(
I dont like the "YA" moniker.. but yes, this is a more fast paced story, but the characters are still pretty complex. I like that about Abercrombie's novels
I think I recommended this to you a while ago maybe? So glad you read them - I thought they were very fun!
I didn't know about this book but you massively disrupted my tbr and I am very happy about it❤❤
I clicked on this video bc I also have heard no one talking about them! So thank you for this video
These were great. I read them as they were published and was disappointed at the lack of discussion. I feel like people were embarrassed or scared off by the YA label. Joe described it as a writing exercise and learning experience. Whatever it is that he's doing, he has steadily improved as an already established author, way more than anyone else I've followed.
Yeah, I've been meaning to read this series. I just bought them a few months ago, but it's weird that no one talks about them. He's so popular after all.
I'm so glad to see you reading these! Book 2 in this series currently sits among my favourites that Abercrombie has written because of the main character. Just started this vid so can't wait to hear what you think of Half a World. I think that's the title of the second book...
The Shattered Sea blew me away, I really enjoyed and in a lot of ways I felt it was tighter than The First Law and enjoyed the lesser complexity but that doesn't mean the first law isn't ultimately better, just that they each have good points.
My library has these on audio. Thanks.
Merphy hate to say it but that mic is the type that must be connected to a shock mount or a boom pole. People its the ber months please send her a great microphone equipments...
I don't often read YA, but i read this trilogy and it was a pleasant surprise. It was clearly YA but didn't feel that way while reading. I loved the series
Oh sweet! These books by him I actually wanted to check out for myself so hearing a review will be helpful
It's worth a read
I have the first one on my shelf but saving it for a rainy day as it’s the last I have of his to read! I have struggled big time to enjoy other books/authors since finishing Age of Madness 😭
Just started reading The Blade Itself yesterday, so far so good
More books to add to the tbr. This series sounds super interesting.
I loved that series. I was literally talking about it with my friends last week making them read it
5:06 stage 1: denial
I could listen to you talk about books forever
It's funny, in Mexico I can hardly find any of the First Law books and lets not talk about the sequel books but I find Half King books more often... weird
fantastic books, I listen on Audible. starting the last book tomorrow.
Shattered Sea could and should have been the basis for a TV show. Now that Vikings and all of that have run it's course, its a solid time to fish it around. Especially on how it touches so much on Russian and Ukrainian topography in Half the World
I exclusively listen to audiobooks these days, and I’ve been through all of First Law twice (3x for some of it). I’ve been avoiding Shattered Sea because Steven Pacey isn’t involved, and comments aren’t high on praise for John Keating’s performance. I’m giving it a go now though, based 60% on your review and 40% on Audible offering Half A King to me for free. :) Thanks for the inspiration!
Appreciate this review from you. Looking forward to the rest as well. Heard nothing but bad things about these.
funny enough, Half a King was the first book I read from this author :DDD
wasn't a bad starting point, only got better from there.
Great entrance!
Great Vlog!
Funnily enough, this is the only Abercrombie series I've ever read.
I am trusting you about this book 📕 so if you like it I will read it as I have all three of the books 📚 on scribed prayers and blessings for you and your husband and your beautiful children love your Aussie family friend John ❤❤❤and I totally understand about his mother
Crimson Empire series by Alex Marshall. Oh it’s good, it’s damn good!
I've read only the first book. It wasn't bad but I didn't continued because the main twist was super predictable. At some moment I will read The Fist Law trilogy, wich I already own and I'm sure it will be much better.
I feel like I should give Joe Abercrombie a try, I am not huge fantasy at least in literature. I think out of the handful I have read I didn't even make it fifty pages into the wheel of time before I stalled and was bored by time I finished the fellowship of the rings, I loved the Potter books at one point, had a false start attempt at Game of Thrones and loved but did not finish the dark tower. Also I kind of like the Conan stories.
Just like I was sure there were French movies I would like and was proven right I am sure there are Fantasy novels out there that I would like.
I've readt he first one, and wasn't sold. Maybe I should get physical copy of the second one, because sometimes with fantasy it doesn't work as an audiobook...
Ramsey Campbell is perhaps the world's most decorated author of horror, terror, suspense, dark fantasy, and supernatural fiction. He has won four World Fantasy Awards, ten British Fantasy Awards, three Bram Stoker Awards, and the Horror Writers' Association's Lifetime Achievement Award, and has been named a Grand Master of Horror.
My bookish friend and I were talking about Mr Abercrombie literally yesterday... and then this lands. Why do I feel this is my sign to read The Blade Itself?!
The Blade Itself is fantastic. The audiobook version with Stephen Pacey is outstanding!
I really enjoyed all 3, but only 1 stands out as a must read, and you can read it as a stand alone. My problems with the sequels is that I just didn't understand what they were attempting thematically, whereas the first book felt complete and seemed to have a strong clear message. Also the 2nd and 3rd books got very "adult". I wanted a book i could share with my kids, when they reach a reading level they can enjoy it. I won't let my kids read the last two but id let them read the first. The first book has violence but not sex
the second and third books have everything. just a heads up for parents
Loved Shattered Sea trilogy!
Unrelated to the video, but its time.
Day 1 of asking Merphy to read Ascendance of a Bookworm
If it got Merphy to read One Piece, then maybe it will work for Ascendance of a Bookworm
That is actually the only Abercrombie book that I've ever read 😅
Could swore you review at least one of these before. Can't find it though.
Please read everything else that is Joe Abercrombie...I did not enjoy the Half a King first book of the series, did not read the rest, it just felt off. Also, if you listen to the audiobooks for all of Joe's other work, Steven Pacey, you will love every minute.
I've read this apparently. It was alright, as I recall
yeah totally forgot, I borrowed it from someone, maybe Grandpa? anyways, I can now say I've read Joe Abercrombie
I don't think they're vikings.
I read them all around 2013, then nearly died waiting for the last to be released. EXCELLENT series!
Next, I very highly recommend the Lightbringer series by Brent Weeks.
I came here for the OP, but staying for the Abercrombie, LETS GO!
Interested to see your thoughts on his next book, think releasing next year?
I think I did the same and finished all the Shattered Seas in a week after finishing all other Abercrombie books
I read a review of these books (mentioned in a review of another book) summarised as: Abercrombie tries to write YA but accidentally writes grimdark and 😂 it's not entirely wrong.
i know we’re talking abercrombie here but honestly i just feel like sitting and swinging in that porch swing would heal me
Yarvi gives me Ivar the boneless vibes but less a*hole vibes 😂. Also I hope there are many drinking sessions in this book
sounds a bit like the Ranking of Kings by Sōsuke Tōka (Manga/Anime)
Day 2 of asking Merphy to read Ascendance of a Bookworm
I first read the shattered sea trilogy before reading the first law trilogy I did like the series but it's not my favorite books by Abercrombie
Sigh.... there goes my monthly book spending limit 😒
Ah yes, FORGOTTEN SFRIES (according to the thumbnail lol)
Hm, we don’t have these books translated from Joe Abercrombie, just the adult ones.
Is it or not a Viking series? I want to write a Viking story and I need more inspiration than How to Train your Dragon.
Have you read anything by John Gwynne?
No, but I want to read the Bloodsworn Saga, but I want to wait until book 3 comes out. But I would like for something that is not too heavy. Wheel of Time or Mistborn levels of heavy would be my sweet spot, I can go a little further as long it doesn't reach Berserker levels of heavy. @@jaycarr5906
Check out Shadow of the Gods and Hunger of the Gods by John Gwynne. It's an ongoing Fantasy Viking Saga
Yes and No. Its not Historical and it does not take place in "Our World" But its Viking as hell. Specifically the Varangians, the Swedes, Norse, Fins, and Danish from around 800.
This sounds like the anime "Ranking of Kings"
What happened to diskworld read along?
16:40
Mismatched versions? 😬
Abercrombie has been telling us all along his secret to writing characters so well. "You have to be realistic about things." Characters react in a realistic manner. The First Law world isn't even grimdark, it's just realistic.
Hearing the review of this trilogy, I'm going to have to pick it up. I can use my kids as an excuse to get YA books, right?
Who is Joe Abercrombie and what is his book about?
Eh that trilogy wasnt anything special
