    Dragonball really is the grandfather of shonen manga and anime and it’s so evident in its early stuff especially.
    Tournament arcs, the mixed humor and action, and best of all Toriyama’s amazing character design and fight choreography.
    I’m so glad you’re enjoying it Merphy!

    "The audacity of this woman!" I felt that. I was also very shocked as I was reading The Wall of Storms but the more I read, the more I understood what she was striving for. You really can't see her whole story until you finished the series and I'm still reeling by how much she has done, thought and sacrificed for her goals. Can you call her selfish or selfless? No one knows. That's why I'm still so !!!! over The Dandelion Dynasty, months after finishing it, because the characters are written with so much vivacity and they truly stay in your mind after you finish it.

    Ken Liu just chilling writing a book that doesn't focus on the characters that much, and then proceeds to also be like...one of the best character writer I have ever read.
    He is simply built different.
    Have a non spoiler passage from a future book to build hype
    The gods of Dara, confounded by the plots and counterplots of mortals, were assembled not in council, but to bear silent witness.

    I think the action seems better in Dragon Ball than in One Piece is because how Toriyama panels his stories, they are super clean, makes your eyes follow the action, the movement, the flow is all top notch, while One Piece's seems cluttered sometimes (I mean Oda has to put a heck ton of story in less than 20 pages sometimes so it's understandable) and while I think Oda overall is a better mangaka, one thing in which Toriyama far surpasses Oda is Paneling. Mark (Totally Not Mark) recently made a really cool video about it, that you should check out if it interests you. (He used panels from DBZ too so spoiler alert)

    • @amuro9624
      @amuro9624 Год назад

      Idk how far into the series he started doing it but at some point he would just take a page and start drawing without any script or storyboard which is very impressive with such clean paneling. It's this one thing that solidified him as a genius in the eyes of other mangaka. In bakuman (a manga about mangaka) the main characters rival is heavily inspired by him by the way.

    I'm not the biggest fan of dandelion dynasty fan in the world, but one thing I have appreciated about it is the way it tackles the theme of women coming to power for the first time in a historically patriarchal society. Most other authors would just show a bunch of strong, smart , and selfless women taking charge despite their opposition, but Ken Liu really shows that women have just as much capacity for evil and selfishness as they do for good and altruism.
    Like you clearly have women like thera, zomi, and gin mazoti, who are strong smart and altruistic, and are clearly trying to do what is best for everyone, but on the other hand, you also have jia who has become a manipulative and murdering tyrant due to her own sense of paranoia and self preservation, and then there's also princess vadyu from the ukyu-taasa who has literally raped and gaslit timu in order to manipulate him into doing what she wants him to do.

    Hey Merphy, so one other random fact in DB is that Toriyama is notorious for just winging it. He didn't have a meticulous plan like Oda for Dragon Ball but he was able to keep things flowing one after the other just by sticking true to what the characters would do in given situations.

    Grace of Kings struck me like one of those second age books they put together from Tolkien’s notes fifty years later. Everything that happened was interesting, but I didn’t get attached to anyone or anything because of the constant jump cuts. However, now that the prologue is done, I’ll give Wall of Storms a try. A lot of people, myself included, consider the Red Ribbon Army arc to be the pinnacle of Dragon Ball. And that includes the "Z" section (keep in mind that there was no Dragon Ball Z manga in Japan - it was all Dragon Ball; that section had its name adjusted in the west to match the popularity of the anime).

I don't know why I didn't like it the first time. Maybe because it focused on a new character? almost, similarly to you, I started Discworld with The Color of Magic. Wait, you will split up a book between audio book and reading it? That is cool! Does it change the narration in your mind while doing it? The way I interpret the books in my head as apposed to audio books always gives me a different perspective as to how I originally read it. Again, that is super neat and I will try it.
