- Hi everyone! Today's video is a book review, or to be more precise, a why you should read The Wall of Storms by Ken Liu. This is the second book in The Dandelion Dynasty, and as the title of this video says, this is the best second book of a series I've read since Words of Radiance by Brandon Sanderson. I got an arc of speaking bones and read it over memorial day weekend, and it did NOT disappoint, personally I think Veiled Throne & Speaking Bones together (as one continuous narrative) is my favorite of the series

Yessssss Wall of Storms!! I think this might be my third favorite second book in a series after Words of Radiance and Clash of Kings. Such an unbelievably climax.

it's my favorite 2nd book in any series ever and arguably my favorite novel of all time!
I like words of radiance but im not sure i would rank it above books such as jade war and royal assassin/ golden fool, but maybe thats bc i need to reread words of radiance before making an actual list
also, in defense of the character you're referring to, she is, yes, quite ruthless but her ambitious are quite inherently and idealistically righteous for the good of all.
She can't trust Kuni's friends and martial nobles because their descendants may not have their great virtue and loyalty; kuni's friends are not 100% flawless. They may change as they age- their sons may rebel. warriors and generals thrive in wartime and in peace they fight against one another bc civil wars make them relevant
Jia's mission is to create a system that does not require a benevolent king to sustain peace.
Jia needs to wield the grace of kings for the future people of Dara. she's willing to be remembered as a great villain (like kikomi), kill personal friends (like kuni), and even deceive/manipulate/encourage others to knowingly or unknowingly contribute to her grand dream (like literally every strategist/supporting character in the series)
She's the one that encouraged Kuni to fly and was also the one that gave him the lesson on how the simple dandelion, a practical unassuming weed, can rival even the greatest of flowers and reach heights never imagined
She's at the very least 1/2 of the dandelion. Ken said that Jia is similar to the historical figures that had the title "the great."
"when you think you people with who are called 'something' "the great", they are always either great heroes or terrible villains depending on whose narrative you're consulting. that's the quality that every "the great" person has. they will have people who absolutely love them and people who absolute despise them. depending on who you ask, they are either a great hero or a great villain."

I definitely don't disagree with the things you said regarding Jia. That's also what made me angry at her SO MUCH. As the passage in the book says, "perspective is everything." Right now, as I haven't read the rest of the books, from my perspective right now, I just don't know how the system she wants to achieve can ever be attained. Although Kuni and his friends aren't flawless, just like her, but MY ideal is more on the line of cooperation and we have to work it out together. If we want to achieve a perfect system, then a discussion with the trusted people will have to be made first rather than manipulating them immediately. I just care about these characters too much to have them be used and killed off. BUT this is one of the things that made the book so brilliant. Thera said in the end of the book, be careful of Jia. Her ideal may be right but her method is poisonous. And I pretty much agree with her on this. Sorry for rambling, I just have so many thoughts on so many things in this book! Not just this one! 🤣

i share the same opinion, this is definetly my fav sequel book together with WOR (and Jade War) 😄 it’s just unbelieveable epic considering The Grace Of Kings is already THAT EPIC! and that freaking coverrrr 😭😭 told you it’s so well designed, UK covers are beautiful but my goodness US Cover arts own the deeper meaning and sums up the story of each book better 😍 i cannot wait to see what is the meaning of that cover on The Veiled Throne

I remember I was folding laundry while listening to the audiobook and at some point I stopped folding and just sat in a giant pile of clothes for a few hours because I got so sucked in. I didn't move until I finished.

I'm in chapter 6 of the "Wall of Storms," and I could not agree more with everything you've said. After finishing the "Grace of Kings," I couldn't wait to jump into this book. I'm anxious to see how any character can evoke more dislike than Cersei Lannister (I'm concurrently reading "A Storm of Swords" ). Fonda Lee may have found a challenger for my favorite author in Ken Liu. LOL
Yeah! It's such a masterful second book of a serirs. The rest of the book after past 6 keeps getting better and better! You'll see why I hated one of the characters so much. 😂

Definitely worth giving a read. I'm still astounded by how amazing this was! I hope book 3 and 4 will be awesome, too!
I would recommend that you do. It’s very good. I’m on book to myself. It’s very very Asian. So you have to be prepared for that type of a story. But it’s excellent. As opposed to something like RF Kuang’s work that I thought was a bit boring and non creative.
The wall of storms is my favorite book in the series I was surprised how much I enjoyed it 😃

I think in total it took me like 12-15 hours, which was in two sittings. I haven't done that with a book since oathbringer, or a few of the early wheel of time books. I'm gonna start wall of storms tonight, and am super excited
The best part of grace of kings was when Kuni got Mata to drop his pants and piss off the wall to put out the fire, I laughed so hard, but it showed their dynamic growth together in such an effective way. Liu is a master.
I couldn't have said it better, this book is an absolute masterpiece. I honestly haven't been able to stop thinking about it and I don't think I will ever get over how good this book was, it's insane.
I love everything about this series, but I am especially impressed with Ken Liu's ability to write female characters. I mean, all of the characters are incredibly well-written, BUT THE WOMEN!! It probably just stands out so much because female characters in fantasy have really been done dirty in the past, so it's so refreshing to see them written so incredibly well here in this series.
Can't wait to read book 3 and 4 at the end of this month! I have no doubts that Liu will be able to stick the landing, he is just incredible 🤩
Yeah! With the two books in the series so far, Ken Liu already wrote some of the best female characters in thebgenre. I am so looking forward to reading book 3 early next month! 😄

I’m telling you this out of constructive criticism. You speak too quickly. It’s very fast. And by doing so, I think many of us will miss a lot of the significance of what you’re saying. You should just slow down a bit. I’m not sure that you realize how quickly you’re talking. I actually had to put it down to .75 to absorb everything you were saying. Please slow down.
Thanks for the constructive criticism. It's something I'm still learning to do. Every time I turned on my camera, I get super nervous and that's why I speak much faster than usual.
