Bet this would make a great inexpensive repeater when out hiking or camping. You could also do the offsets and DTMF/DCS code and use Rattlegram to keep the commoners from know your convo.
Gonna try do deploy something like this over my place, last time I had to go to work, no more cellphone or internet by fiber working. With 3 kids better safe than sorry.
I did this about 25 years ago with some similar device from Radio Shack and an HTX 2M radio. I still have the radio (they were quite good radios), and I bet my junk box probably still has the repeater in it. It worked well, and I kept it around for emergencies. I think it even had a landline connection to create radio to telephone links, so,etching that was popular before cell phones.
Having had three SureCom SR-112s over the years. They are suppose to be able to save voice mail and transmit a prerecorded massage at a preset time period. I've never been able to make those functions work. My trick, which makes me no friends. Is set the radio on the SureCom SR-112 to the GMRS repeater tones and duplex frequencies. Walk or drive some distance away. Identify into the GMRS repeater duplex which feeds into the 2nd radio and the Surecom which retransmits the message back trough the GMRS repeater and back to me. Twice I've had repeaters owners who where antisocial become social and use naughty words and tell me where to insert my SureCom.🥶🥴😟

It is pretty much plug and play. It does have features for periodic announcements such as repeater id and such. That isn’t difficult and is programmed by using DTMF tones on a handheld radio
Linking is theoretically possible with simplex (parrot) repeaters with split ctcss tones. It would be a bit clumsy with latency from the time it takes to speak then repeat then repeat again. But possible. A better solution would be to use two full duplex repeater controllers with crossband repeating. VHF/UHF UHF/VHF or vice versa. I would also recommend using radios with better filtering as well. Baofengs are notoriously susceptible to desensitization. Now “Trunking” is a totally different animal. That generally requires a third RF control channel to direct communication over many different repeaters. Newer systems do away with this third RF channel and use IP links or direct fiber for control channels between repeaters. But yes it is possible. Not really practical for simplex repeaters. However in a make shift or emergency situation could you pull it off? Sure
