Nikolai Mordasov - Jazz Miniatures [30 pieces]

  • Опубликовано: 26 июл 2024
  • All the pieces are presented quite simply and concisely, the piano texture allows them to be widely used in work with beginners studying the piano course both in a children's music school and in a college. The pieces not only pose technical and rhythmic problems for the player, but also contribute to the expansion of the musical horizons, introduce the fundamental elements of jazz music (phrasing, swing, improvisation). The miniatures are arranged in order of increasing difficulty and are interesting to work in the classroom.

      Ah! Makes perfect sense now! They're charming little pieces, though my slight criticism was how basic in fundamentals they appeared. Funny too because I'm not a jazz major, but rather classical, so these will definitely come in handy as a great way to learn some fundamentals in jazz performance.

      Then you'd probably be astonished by amazing sympho-jazz by the great russian composer Georgy Firtich. He used to be my best friend, but sadly, about 7 yrs ago he died of cancer. I wish people knew more of his music, because he composed a bunch of music for symphony orchestra (even ballets), a lot of vocal pieces, piano pieces, chamber music, etc. ...and literally tons of movie soundtracks. Sometimes i remember our meet-ups, and when i do, i miss him a lot. He was much older than me, but we used to get along pretty well. Sounds unbelievable, but in his young years, he was lucky to work with Leo Theremin (the inventor of Thermenvox).

    Very fine work ; a great introduction to jazz music. It is quite amazing to see how the binary semiquaver can swing (as in piece num 1 for instance). A very intersting enhancement could be to add chord symbols and to suggest a fingering. Anyway, thank you very much for sharing ! My intention is to go throughout the whole set of proposed pieces ;-) спаси́бо

    Oof, this might be adjacent to jazz, but there is no swing present at all🥲 It’s not being felt or written like jazz. And there are much much better ways of notating “near swing” than dotted-eighth-sixteenth. For example, take the oft-used shorthand of eighth-eighth equal triplet-quarter, triplet-eighth, and write your piece in compound meter.
    This gives a classical musician a highly inaccurate introduction to jazz, which we would normally start teaching by teaching swing. It does provide exposure to some common voicings and licks, as well as harmony, but these are less essential to what jazz is than, say, swing, improvisation, song structure, chord symbols, and feel. Those are all lacking from this body of work and make it unsuitable as a passport from classical to jazz.
    I suppose it is totally worthy of merit on its own as it’s own thing. Not my taste, but taste is subjective. But if this purports to be jazz, or to teach jazz fundamentals to classical students, at that I take offense, for that it is somewhat objectively not.

    • @PianoScoreVids
      @PianoScoreVids  2 года назад

      Good points. I played other sets of contemporary Jazz miniatures, for example by Milan Dvorak, where he gives also written instructions per piece. There he explicitly writes to swing almost everything either with that triplet feel, or to not swing it at all.
