This is my perspective as well. Also, dude is highly qualified with all his STEM stuff. Imagine how horrible he must feel being overqualified for his 4 hr day at a zoo restaurant...
He may not have been able to find any other available work as nobody with those types of degrees may have openings.
Tons of people go to school to get good degrees, and then find out that the job they got it for isn't in demand, or employs quickly and easily. I imagine that's put a bee in his bonnet...

Imagine having a kid that got a degree in a STEM field, which tend to be some of the most difficult degrees to pursue (coming from a biomed major), and then having the nerve to call them lazy all because they're stuck working a dead end job after putting in all that work to get a piece of paper to say that they can work far more interesting jobs. This parent simply doesn't appreciate or understand their kid is what it sounds like. Nor do they appreciate people working in the service industry.

Eh, not really. I’m not gonna downplay how grueling a service job can be, I know from experience, but it definitely doesn’t compare to the military most of the time. The dad likely has had much tougher schedules than anything his son has dealt with.
That’s not to say the kid shouldn’t have the right to complain, though. I’ve worked two week shifts before and they suck balls. Just because they’re not as grueling as a military work schedule doesn’t mean it’s a do-nothing job.
Also, to @niles8576, could you not interrupt, the adults are talking.

It’d be different if it was just a part time job on like a 4 hour shift I’d work everyday in that case, but what the guy op referring to is being asked is kind of unacceptable.

For story 2 I call bull shit on the dad, he said he worked 16 hours straight for 4 weeks. As so eone in the military there ain't no way that would happen, cuz that would mean only 8 hours outside of work and most of that would be asleep. Not to mention, unless he was in the airforce, he would also need to still be doing physical training, and even if he wasn't for his own personal reasons the time those who did would be taken up. And that those who I know that don't do pt aren't at work until first work call. So that sounds like a load of crap too me. Cuz ik officers aren't doing that and if he was an NCO it wouldn't get that far either and lower enlisted always leaves before their leaders soo, that's cap. Also saying no days off, so unless he is talking about deployment or rotation, which is a different animal, then that's a lie cuz we always get weekends on a very rare occasion do we come in on weekends and have a 3-4 day weekends atleast once a month

Story 2: I may not know a full routine for a military person but I have some ideas from JROTC in high school. The service is a clockwork type of routine and you are working with everyone around you but you are not handling random people with their demands. Also, how is having a job doesn't count as work? If you get paid to do something, it's work. What do you do at a job? Work, that's right.😡 If op's son was just walking around not attending people and not get paid, then it wouldn't count as work. Odds are, he has to give the customers drinks and food not just talk to people on what they want to order. Working for customers is draining and if his son has to deal with obnoxious customers then he will be a lot more drained than before. He plays his games to decompress from bullshit that people throws are him. Now I have another reason not work at food. Yes, I said like that because if I said "work for food" would make me sound like a starving idiot. Op needs to talk both of his kids to see where they are coming from and see that it's a battlefield when it come to working to serve customers. It's one thing to get orders from your bosses but it's nothing when you have them and random people also giving you orders. The son tried talking to him but op isn't getting it so that's why his sister has to tell you about it. Hell, my dad busted his ass working 2 jobs and he didn't criticized me and my brothers on our choices for jobs and saying that they aren't work. Like I said, op needs to talk to both of his kids and see, no, actually listen on what they are saying or else he will not only drive away his son but also his daughter. this guy really pisses me off.🤬
Story 3: Now for something that's lighthearted in comparison to the last to. Lawyer up and divorce that POS and make him regret his choices and then move on. Don't look back and grid him to the ground. I am no lawyer but I think you have a solid case to not only divorce him, keep the kids, keep everything you have and get payments to help with the kids. Fight hard and then move on.

IT story: I do agree to not feel bad for the dude. He knew what he needed and he should of kept his nose to the ground. He wanted both the status of being the guru but luxury of coasting by. That just doesnt work.
However, yeah OP could of known the dude would of croaked. He knew early on shane needed the retirement for his medical issues and was told the dude was on oxygen. So yeah, OP shoulda known that getting this dude fired woulda had him die.
So should OP feel bad? Nah. But should OP have known this woulda happened? Yes.

Well, OP stated they didn't find out until *well* after Guru-Dumdum was gone that he had medical issues that would turn fatal. If anything, the dude should have known that if he were to take a risk of losing his job, that he would end up losing his retirement package. Anybody would rationally assume that such a person would apply for government assistance and possibly look at getting a different job to hold them over until welfare and Social Security checks come in.
So no, OP is NTA under any circumstance. Nobody knew the guy was gonna go belly-up until well after the fact. Especially since Guru-Dumdum admitted, to OP's face, that he wanted him to be fired purely out of spite and not lack of merit.

@@MilesEdgeworth129 I did not say OP was an AH. I just said it is naïve to assume the dude wouldnt croak. OP knew about Shane’s plans and medical issues. It is stated in about 2mins in OP is told by Mel about the serious medical issues and the fact shane uses oxygen. So it is not like OP did not have this information.
Also government assistance takes quite a while to get on. Chances could be Shane died while waiting for it.
Again, none of this makes OP the AH. Shane wanted to coast by but also be the guru. This does the work and for his greed and pride he got fired and ended up dying. That is his fault.
I just feel OP is just a tad bit naive *if* he truly thought shane would of not died.

      @MilesEdgeworth129 10 месяцев назад +1

@@DanielGonzalez-qk6sd But is it really his fault? He followed the correct procedure for reporting workplace misconduct, and appropriate action was taken to keep the business in good standing. It's not his fault Shane necessarily ended up passing as a result; if anything, it's Shane's own fault for doing stupid things at work. If your job is your only means of survival, then you'd better not do anything that would jeopardize it.
Naivety has nothing to do with it. It's about doing the right thing. In the words of Leonard Nimoy, the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few or the one.

The second story. I have to say that both the OP and his son are the jerk. The OP is a jerk because he doesn't seem to recognize being a server as an actual job or simply sees it as temporary job that his son has before getting his dream job that he studied for but a job is a job, even someone who walks dogs for a living or mows lawns, you provide a service and you get get paid. And I say the son is a jerk because he constantly complains to his dad about the annoyances at his job and it sounds like the dad is just fed up with hearing it, also the way the son is reacting for being told that he has to work 12 days in a row says a little bit about his work ethic. Does the son think that if he has a job in stem cell research that their is no chance of him having sleepless nights or having to work overtime or even far more hours than when he worked as a server ?

story 1: The coworker 100% did that to themselves. That 'good ol' boy' mentality just doesn't fly in the modern tech world. You do the work to skill up and keep up or you fall by the wayside. It is a requirement for my job that I either renew or gain a new certification every single year along with skilling up on everything up and coming. I get the concept of being close to retirement and burnt out, but being a complete arrogant pos gets what you deserve. OP was even nice enough not to rag on him for obviously knowing nothing that he should have known and instead gave him a very good crash course that he could have used to his own advantage. Don't stab your team in the back because no one else is gonna be up with you till 3 in the morning when the fires come.

Story 1: I understand why OP was shocked about the outcome of this story, but it's not his fault. Shane did what he did, and he was then simply faced with the consequenses of his own actions. OP has to look out for himself, it wouldn't be fair if he had let his career get ruined just to save Shane's butt over a situation which was Shane's fault. Bad things happen to bad people.

Now the dad and son story I will argue on due to the fact the son said he does the bare minimum at his job. I don’t downplay servers because when I worked in retail I saw the worst of people. I believe that there is more onto the story like is the son actively looking for work in his degree field because the way it sounds he’s just coasting. The dad might be trying to light that fire in him. I would be working hard to try to find a job that I went to school for and worry less about having a weekend.

Ok what I think is wrong here is story number 2 because being a waiter is still a pretty bad job and its not that hard but it is time consuming and so repetitive that you start to mentally fatigue and it explains the kids bad attitude but the dad is right if you're doing nothing you might as well try and get paid instead, but that not was the kid was doing he was enjoying his free time he needs a break too the dad is not doing a good job helping his own child by helping them feel better about anything at all if anything its adding salt to the wound for his apathy for his next long shift

The father is definitely a jerk for downplaying the job of his son and disrespecting what he does in his free time. These older people need to stop complaining about the Xbox and PlayStation.. like we are not in your childhood where you played kick the can or watched old timey shows. It's perfectly reasonable for him to want to unwind on his console..I mean some people actually rely on consoles and computers same as how when they say to pause an online game. Shit is annoying. The father needs to take these words seriously stop acting like a child and act like a man.grow up and get with modern times. Your opinions don't make things a fact he should definitely apologize because honestly the son is not acting entitled the father is

In the story with the older worker, the younger worker should have made the older worker admit to the company what he did, and publicly apologize, rather than show the conversation. It may not have ended in his firing.

Story 2. I agree that mom was in the wrong there BUT the son is in the wrong to! I am regularly in a 12 day work period. I work in farming and this is also hard work. I work on weekends, holidays and days like that. I usually take holidays from the pig farmer I work for. He is happy that I do and he is happy to pay more for that! When I do my 12 day work period I work nearly 60 hours a week at the most! I have been working on farms where I dislike the boss so I quit there and began on other farms!

12 day work period is illegal in many countries like Finland. its inhumane to force someone to work over 40h a week or over 5 days a week. to me working more then 40h a week sounds like torture as employers can't make someone work over 40h a week here i Finland.

I think it's fair to not want to have to work 12 days in a row at a job you hate. I'd ask my boss about it too. If it came down to my job or weekends off though I would work the 12 days. I'd also spend my evenings and lunch looking for a new job.

I don't agree with your conclusion about the dad. His son is freeloading off of his dad, complaining about work & acts like yhis is how life is going to be...always relying on daddy. His dad let him stay while he finds a good job & saves money. He's wasting his degree & is obviously a little too comfortable living like he is. He needs to man up. His dad should've went about it in a different way, as it is harsh. But it sounds to me like the son is acting like an entitled brat when he should be trying to find a job in his field.
