    This manages to be not just a “list of the cool knew words,” but also, an explanation of which new words are the most strategically significant and why. The point about ZUKE being an immediate improvement on ZEK if you have a U you need to dump was great. From a production quality standpoint, showing the placement of the words on the board in order to demonstrate their strategic significance and how hard they could hit is a fantastic touch as well, particularly with YAJE. Awesome stuff.

    It's interesting to know that the words were already in the Collins dictionary. It's also funny to see Jedi here because I ended up being able to play that word today on scrabble go despite it not being a valid word on Scrabble Complete (which also lacked qi but thankfully it has a custom dictionary feature). I also see "emoji" and "hygge" being promoted on the cover which are also cool inclusions imo.

    Maybe the most surprising new addition in the "how was this not already here" category is "headbutt". I understand words like "shoutout" and "dogpiled" not being in the Scrabble lexicon until now despite being in the actual lexicon for a while, but "headbutt"? That's been a word for a century. Merriam-Webster puts its first known usage at 1925.

    I would be interested in a video on The Checklist. By this I mean that every Scrabble player has a list, mostly unstated, of things to do every turn. I'm wondering what those are for a high level player. For example: 1. Check opponent's strength. 2. Check current tournament standings. 3. Check current game score. 4. Count remaining tiles. 5. Evaluate rack for bingos. 6. Estimate opponent's likely rack. 7. Evaluate board available spots..... etc. etc. There's a great deal to keep in mind and I suspect I'm missing a lot of it.

    • @wanderer15
      @wanderer15  11 месяцев назад +2

      You've covered a ton with that list already, but don't underestimate how much time #5 and #7 take before you even begin to take all the other stuff into account! Finding words on your rack and places to play them is the bread and butter of the game and takes up a lot of time, both within each individual game, and outside the game as preparation (learning the dictionary, etc.)

  • @Ceruleanst
    @Ceruleanst 11 месяцев назад +8

    ZUKE would given you a 47-point ZA hook in your game against Wirtual 3 months ago. I commented at the time that I was "surprised you missed it" because I thought it was legal already, and I even checked online first but I guess I believed the wrong site.

    • @wanderer15
      @wanderer15  11 месяцев назад +5

      The Merriam words were added to their online dictionary a little while ago, but it takes time for other licensees like the Scrabble Go mobile game, playscrabble.com web game, etc. to get an updated copy of the list as part of their licensing deals. Similarly, tournament organizations have a little delay in between source dictionaries updating and the tournament word list updating.

    The biggest problem I have with updates is that there is no guarantee how long a word list will be in use before a future update. I primarily played competitively during the period when the 4th edition was in use, and this long period of stability made it possible to effectively learn the entire list. This no longer seems practical due to frequent large- and small-scale updates, and is the primary reason I stopped playing.

      Merriam-Webster added a bunch more words to its lexicon right after publishing the physical 7th edition book - if you go here: www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/pwn - you'll see it, but it didn't make it into the book in time. However, it is now valid in the tournament list maintained by NASPA. I know, it's confusing/messy...

    Hey Will, how come FART is not allowed but MILF is?
    Surely the latter is more offensive to people.

    • @wanderer15
      @wanderer15  10 месяцев назад

      Good catch. I was a little imprecise there - MILF is coming to the official tournament list in North America, which has slightly more words deemed “offensive” than Merriam’s. I don’t think MILF will make it into Merriam’s list, but your point about FART still stands - it’s absurd that it’s not good in MW.

      That's "lolly", and it's been a word since the beginning.
      Speaking of which, "lol" should also be a word now, if they accepted other internet terms like "meh", "pwn" (which is just a misspelling of "own"), and now "amirite".
