How thermal shock can cause flange leakage
Learn more using our Free engineering content: www.engineerin...
In this video, we discuss how sudden increases in operating temperature can result in leakage at flange joints. More specifically, you will learn how thermal transients inside a flange joint can lead to loss of bolt loading and hence loss of gasket seating pressure. This will be illustrated by a Finite Element Analysis using the FEPipe software by Paulin Research Group.

Hey Luuk, misschien leuk om een short te maken waar je het in een nutshell uitlegt. Verder wel een interessante clip!
Bedankt voor de suggestie, Thomas. Dat staat zeker op onze radar!
So, using longer studs at joints which experience rapid temp changes can reduce this effect?
Please do a video on flanged joint analysis and touch on this subject.
Hi Joshua, you are correct. Longer bolts help to distribute the enforced displacement over more length resulting in lower stress.
How about the bolts whoch are tensioned?
Hi Ashish, thanks for asking. So the bolt in this video was tensioned as normal when the thermal shock happened. Also, if you te-tension the bolt there is much less control over the status of the bolt. It could be a temporary solution until replacement is possible.
So the flat face flanges are worst case in case of heat expansion??
