Joe, thanks for putting this video together. Civil War is such a great game and we're actually just about to start a game. I haven't played it in years, so I needed to brush up on the rules, and your video was very helpful in jogging my memory.
Great video. Loved this game. I do think, that any cavalry leaders tactical rating effects the reaction roll for an army's reaction. I could be wrong, haven't played in awhile
Thank you. You are right! I completely overlooked that rule (which also makes perfect sense!) The reacting Army adds the Tactical Rating of the highest ranked cavalry leader. That would have been a +2 for the Confederates on account of Forrest. Huge difference! Thanks for the heads up! The game is just fantastic and has withstood the test of time.
Thank you for this. CW was my favorite war-game for over 20 years. I have played the full campaign more than 100 times. You do a great job of teaching this system. I am looking forward to GMT upcoming reboot.
Whitney Milam Thanks, Whitney. It is a great game. I am also looking forward to GMT's game. It borrows many mechanics from Civil War, including the dice roll difference mechanic, which is just brilliant.
Very nice job; I really enjoy your videos. I've been playing this game since '83 and have a VASSAL game going right now (turn 3) with multiple variations. It's still my favorite war game of all time.
Joe, [1] In your quite fine & most useful video, at about 11:14, you incorrectly stated that Bragg/AoM could not react into 2720. In fact, the rules allow the AoM to enter 2720. [2] Beginning at 10:11 you stated that Sherman/AoT will move from 2718 to 2719. 2719 is in the AoM’s Army Reaction Radius. This allows the AoM to possibly react, if it gets a proper die roll. [3] At 11:14, you correctly stated that AoM could not react into 2618. However, more specifically at 11:22, you incorrectly stated the AoM could not react into 2720. [4] ----- [a] Rule 12.3.12, s3, sets forth, “The Reaction Radius of the Phasing player’s Army is judged from the hex it occupies before it enters the announced hex.” ----- [b] Also, Example 12.3.17 covers the same positional situation as your AoT & AoM video example. This example also allows the AoM to react into 2720. ----- [c] In your video example, hex (2718) that the AoT occupies prior to entering the announced hex (2719) has no Army Radius into 2720. Thus, the AoM can react into 2720, if the AoM gets a proper die roll. ----- Reply as you may desire. Danke & Slainte, Richard Cuccia, richardcuccia@cox.net, richardcuccia@hotmail.com . Thanks for the detailed video. It gave me a couple ideas that I'm really looking forward to.
Seams like a good game

You make the combat look so easy - thanks!

Thank you, Indy. Glad yoU liked the video. The game is still great after all these years.
This is an amazing war game!
Great video! This really meets a need for rules video explanation for wargamers.
+krasnykavkaz Thank you. The game mechanics were pretty unusual when it was published originally. Great game!
great job Joe!
I wish they had a PC version of this game so bad.

You can't use the reroll option when rolling for leader casualties?
No. The reroll option is only used for the actual combat rolls.
Mike Stoddart no
I think this seies will be fun to watch, but seems a little fiddley for my tastes.
