I’ve never thought to tell my kids to find a mom if we’re separated. Man that’s freakin genius, my wife would be all fangs and claws to take care of any kid hers or not.
I thought of something similar last time we visited the Texas State Fair. I told our daughter to find an elderly couple or "grandma" if she couldn't find someone in uniform. I figured an elderly person is less likely to be involved with human trafficking.
While driving I would play “I Spy” with my kids. They loved it and it taught them to pay attention to details. Thanks Mac. I’m going to use your advice with my granddaughters.
As a Father of two toddlers I really enjoyed this clip! You can’t start early enough educating your children on the realities of life and preparing them as much as possible to be able to make quick sound decisions. Basic Parent Stuff 🤜🏻
Great question, great topic. Situational awareness is on the top of the list always and need to be thought as young as possible! Great idea making it a game. 🗽✌🏻
You can also tell kids to find an Auntie. I’m like a Mom, but cooler and I have experience in insane situations, including helping lost, hysterical little kids. The business card trick is great and works for most kids. My nephew was that kid who could lose his head if it wasn’t attached, he could turn around and my business card would disappear from his pocket. I wrote my name and cell phone on the inside of his arm for him to show the police officers or moms. You can wash off ink or marker pretty easy during a bubble bath.
If "Perspective" is the key, then "Perception" is the lock. Knowing which lens to view the world through, and which things to view, are critical for anyone no matter the age.
Good stuff. A few weeks ago I zoned out snacking in a crowded parking lot, and was brought to my senses by a man at the passenger's door wanting directions (weird). It turned out o.k., but I kick myself for not seeing him come up.
I have never had such a solid plan for my next trip to Walmart. Usually I know 2 things I need, check for ammo that I don’t need but will buy anyway, and maybe grab something from the camp section (Mountain House biscuits and gravy, lower price and more calories by volume)
....+1 for the Judas Priest pic on Pats’ wall 👍.... I have been a fan for Many Years... Makes me feel old just thinking about seeing them when they did their 50yr anniversary tour of their British Steel album... They sounded awesome, and put on probably the best show I have ever seen them play.... I saw them not too long ago and again, they totally kicked ass!!.. I really like pats taste in music and muscle cars 👍...
Another cool thing to do in the car is teaching them vehicle makes and eventually models. Of course they know their colors, so that'll help with vehicle ID. But randomly my 6 year old will randomly say, hey there's a lot of Toyotas (or whatever) on the road! Or Cool Ford! Etc.
Again, Pat Mac is the the SHIT!!! I have always tried to teach my daughter's situational awareness but unfortunately I had a wife (ex-wife) who never understood the importance of what I was trying to impart on my kids as a police officer dad. I wish I had had the foresight to teach it that way.
Funny you mention state fair. When I would take my kids and neighborhood kids to the state fair we’d always wear blaze orange ball caps but I really like the idea of a business card
I do the same to my autistic daughter all parents need to do the same and teach there kids to stay off the cell phone.and at a Walmart!!! Need we say more there are more easy people to pick off today .I could make bank . Also add to don't be some one who sees something and does nothing. That's my petpeve. Good question and great reply thank you.
I would also make them lead, without warning, we just walked out into walmart parking lot take me to the car I'm following you, they have an o shit moment next time they are prepared, also helps them to make decisions when they don't know, so the right answer after not knowing where the car is, is figure it out what do we do cause we can't freeze and we can't stay still, we gotta move, another good way is when you are out driving tell them to direct you home, you drive they tell you where to go
Right on Pat "Situational Awareness" is #1 skill that all Mom's & Dad's and kids of all ages need to master !! You are so right when you say that it is fun to make it a game when they are young. But what advise do you have for honing SA skills for a teenager? My kid is now 14 yrs old and all I get is "I don't care or I know watch my 6" I'm at a loss of how to drive home the point that SA is a must have skill??
I did something similar to this with my older daughter (and am doing it with my younger daughter) for driving situational awareness. About a year out from them starting to be behind the wheel I would ask questions about it being clear on the left and right to turn onto a road, should I stop or continue on based on when the yellow light came on versus where my vehicle was, do they think the car in the lane next to me is a risk (based on seeing some vehicle swaying).

Boss Sentinel. I have taught my girls similar things, but I’m still preaching safety and preparation. Never stop.
That’s awesome man!

I do the same thing with my kids. It's very analogous to being situationally aware. A good jumping-off point.

Pat Mac is a good dude with a good heart.

How lucky are Pat’s kids?! It’s so great and cool that he taught his kids all this stuff.
Awesome topic!! Pat Mac for Prez!!!

Being out of Raleigh, I used the find a mom example from the state fair to the karate today.
Thanks Gentlemen!
Nice... this s the first thing I teach everyone !!

Thanks! And because of your teaching, I started teaching my 4 daughters the 5-25 beginning at about age 5.

I used to write my mobile number on my childrens arms in permanent marker when visiting big places like theme parks and fairs.
Thank you
Very good idea. I also teach things like this to the little ones in my family.
Great stuff, thanks. 😉👍

Hell yeah Mumma bears are for real!
Priceless advice. Excellent teaching method. Great Dad Pat. I did buy Sentinel and great tiebacks in this short vid.
I like the idea of making it a game. That must help prevent instilling an unhealthy level of paranoia while giving them the tools they need to react
This is gold. Can’t wait to start doing this.
This is really good stuff

Great tips. Keeping it playful is the key.
Anyone ever seen that episode in The Wire where Mcnulty is teaching his son’s surveillance?
Here’s a clip of it: ruclips.net/video/27xMioYzOyQ/видео.html
Yeah through the market if I recall, that was a decent show
KEEP YOUR HEAD ON SWIVEL...
Very well put.
That’s sage advice for the wee ones. “Cooper’s Color Codes of Situational Awareness” is a bit advanced for such young minds.
This is awesome!
