It's great to hear Karen talking for herself! She's my favorite singer of all time! Her voice was beautiful, pure, lovely & sweet. She had tremendous style in her singing. What a great lady &:wonderful person!
Richard went in rehab on January 10, 1979. Richard did do the preadmission for Meninger's on December 12, 1978. Karen flew out to London on December 11, 1978 and then to Topeka Kansas on December 12 then did the taping for the Bruce Forsyth show on December 14. Richard had the DTs (shakes) from Quaalude withdrawals and was shaking really bad. But there was actually a coin toss before and I really wish that RUclips would allow direct links again as this is a long story... But Karen agreed to do the Bruce show if Jerry Weintraub agreed to let Richard take the time off he needed to go to rehab. Jerry agreed and Richard went to rehab on January 10, 1979. As far as the coin toss, it was either Richard or Jerry that flipped the 1971? Eisenhower silver dollar and after being flipped the dollar went on the floor and Jerry picked it up and covered it on his wrist. I had told Karen "say heads I win, tails you lose" but Karen said, "Heads, I always call heads". While the coin was on Jerry's wrist Jerry said to Karen, "I'll do anything you want if you agree this is heads and do the show. The toss was if Karen called it (heads) Karen would do the show and if not (tails) the show would be cancelled. Karen asked Jerry if Jerry would give Richard the time off for rehab and Jerry agreed. Then Jerry took his hand off and it was tails, so like Karen said on the show "we tossed a coin... and I lost". But by losing, Karen actually won one for her brother.
How nice to hear Karen speak without constant interruption or overpowering from Richard. Standing on her own, yet soon to be headed into an unfortunate marriage.
8969DEINZE, thank you so much for sharing these historic and informative interviews with the Carpenters. Karen's priceless interviews are especially touching since she left us far too soon. The Carpenters' musical legacy is extraordinary and timeless.
30 degrees in L.A. I can't imagine how L.A. residents felt about the drastic temperature change. It is 13 degrees in West Virginia right now. There is also a heat wave in Maryland; 15 degrees ⛄🎄😎
I love all about KC...GOD!!I'm so in love with this woman...I'm only 20,and a tomboy just for KC...I LOVE YOU KC...I WANT TO RE-MARRY YOU...HAHAHA..NO KIDDING I LOVE KC
No one realized it at the time, but Karen's trip to England sans Richard was the beginning of her solo career. In an alternate universe, her solo album saw release, and a HEALTHY, HAPPY KC maintained a dual solo/Carpenters career throughout the eighties and beyond. Perhaps she got married and had kids. Perhaps she didn't. But neither Richard nor Carpenters management - nor worst of all, HER BATTLEAXE MOTHER, AGNES - dictated terms to her on how to run her life. Unfortunately, in THIS universe, she only got a TASTE of that freedom---A&M refused to release her album, which crushed her; she rushed into a marriage with a disingenuous scumbag; and she ultimately succumbed to the damage anorexia nervosa did to her system, brought on by psychological neglect from dear old mom. REST IN POWER, KC. YOU DESERVED BETTER. 🥁🎤🎶🤍
As far as I know it was done for Rolling Stone magazine on March 17, 1980 and then I think the album was shelved on March 25th so it is probably in the Rolling Stone archives probably never to see the light of day.

That's about the time Rich was in rehab and Karen covered for him. What a wonderful sister❤
You failed to hear that 5 members of the band had the flu also
Yes he was in rehab at that time. They probably came up with that little white lie between them.
