The Earls of Morton, a branch of Clan Douglas, are related to Clan Hamilton through marriage. When James Douglas, the 3rd Earl of Morton, passed away in 1550, the title did not pass to his eldest daughter Margaret, who was married to James Hamilton, Duke of Châtelherault. Instead, the title passed to the husband of Elizabeth, the youngest daughter of the 3rd Earl, who was married to James Douglas of Pittendreich. This connection was made to secure the alliance of the powerful Angus Douglas clan.
Today, the relationship between the Earls of Morton and Clan Hamilton remains one of historical connection and shared heritage. The current Earl of Morton, Stewart Douglas, and the current Duke of Hamilton, Alexander Douglas-Hamilton, are both descendants of the Douglas family, which has a long and storied history in Scotland. While they are not directly related by marriage as they were in the past, they share common ancestors and a deep-rooted connection through their family lineage.
