Nice job, Mr. Larsen. You put the screws to both North Korea and Alejandro Cao de Benos. One concern I have: I hope you did not put the Swedish Embassy personnel in danger. Those rabid pitbulls in North Korea are most suspicious and very vicious.
The first time I watched The Mole documentary I felt that there was so much that was implausible it failed to convince me. For instance, any group aligned with North Korea would be under surveillance by government intelligence agencies. According to an interview published by Vice in 2016 Anders Kristensen, the President of the Danish Korean Friendship Association, stated "I think we've had members, who were undercover intelligence officers". He is referring to officers of the Danish Security and Intelligence Service. Therefore Alejandro Cao de Benós would have to be mad or stupid to recruit an accomplice for sanctions busting from the friendship associations. The North Koreans would also have to be mad or stupid to involve the friendship associations in sanctions busting. Also why did Alejandro Cao de Benós suggest to "Mr James" investing in arms and drug manufacture when legitimate joint ventures with North Korea were not to be banned by the United Nations untill 2017. In 2013 Mr James could have been offered the opportunity to invest in something like a mineral water bottling plant. The most baffling thing of all in the documentary is the failure of Alejandro Cao de Benós or the North Koreans to verify the identity of Mr James and his bogus company Taga Investments. Equally incredible is the failure of Ulrich Larsen and Jim Mehdi Latrache-Qvortrup to devise a cover story for his bogus Taga Investments untill arriving in North Korea. Equally strange is the ability of Ulrich Larsen to enter the Danish KFA and become the KFA delegate for Scandinavia without anyone doubting his sincerity and commitment despite him being an anti communist who hates the DPRK regime and supports sanctions. He even managed to gain the trust of Alejandro Cao de Benós to such an extent that he was recruited as his partner for sanctions busting operations.
the risk and reward still checks out as far as north korea is concerned. the risks of being caught bypassing sanctions are much more preferable than the risk of economic collapse and revolt. north korea doesnt care as much about being caught violating sanctions in this way because theres really not much the west can do anyway.
@Tristan: You pose some very good question. I'm a skeptic by nature too, so while cheering for the mole internally, I also have some doubts. I can't believe the north korean intelligence agents didn't do a background check on Mr. James...is this normal procedure for a random multi-millonaire coming out of the blue and wanting to spend 50mil on a weapon deal while meeting high ranking officials inside NK? They never did a basic google research for Taga investments? Western countries constantly get hacked by NK gov't hackers, they're skilled by all means, but can't do a small background check? Nobody asking with which documents Jim Latrache-Qvortrup entered NK? Because if it were his official ones, I doubt they would believe him having 50mil USD aside as pocket money for a weapons deal after spending 8 years in prison for selling coke in Denmark. Also, Ulrich Larsen was supposedly a one man show on disability pension, how is he able to set aside all the money for the travel of him and Jim Latrache-Qvortrup, including the charter of the yacht where they met with Alejandro. I'm speculating hard right now, but something is fishy here. It could be realistic that Larsen was backed by the danish intelligence service and the documentary is some kind of low level addition or distraction. I could also be totally wrong here, just guessing
I think it went down just they way they said it in the documentary. But my best guess is that more people were involved that didn't want to be named in the documentary. Think about it, how would they find an ex-cia undercover agent without some kind of secret service connection? It's not like they walk around with a sign or write it in their bio on Instagram. My best guess is that they started it small just like Ulrich said and once they figured out the whole thing would get bigger than they expected, they contacted experts to ensure Ulrich and Mr James would be safe. Of course that's all just speculation. Maybe they just did everything like they said it happened in the documentary. Who knows? We can just be happy that noone got hurt.
