Jaw-dropping stuff. To have reached that level of technical proficiency, *and* to have such sophisticated harmonic understanding, *and* to be able to swing, *and* to have assimilated the style, *and* to have the confidence to improvise, not only at such a young age, but to have accomplished all that in just a few short years (according to the story on _The World_, he started playing at six, and "got serious" at seven)... Beyond remarkable.
rloomis3 You said it ! Its the maturity of the constructions he is achieving ! I would love to hear him working a Beethoven Sonata - ......I think I am going to make a Barbecue from my violin ! Probably be the best sound its produced in years !
+JOE SMITH It's funny. I always make jokes after seeing bands like Snarky Puppy and wanting to set my drums on fire to heat my house. That said...This kid is a staggering example of what human musical evolution is and how underrated it is. His understanding of time alone, is unbelievably mature. Exploring harmonics like that, at his age, seems downright scary. I became a fan recently. I look forward to watching him grow. I'm glad he'll do it in the jazz world, as opposed to any other form of entertainment.
+Alwi Gadod and Mozart was Austrian , Paganini was Italian,Stravinsky Russian, and Jazz Prodigys?Gadi Lehavi another amazing young jazz pianist is Israeli Andreas Varady is Slovakian ..so whats is your point exactly?
I love My Favorite Things and in the past started my day listening to John Coltrane's version, I think that I will switch to Joey's version for a while.... wonderful music.
I can't hope to describe this kid's talent in a way that does it justice. He stsrts off playing "My Favorite Things"...but then his improv abilities showcase his skills in ways that show just how astounding his genius truly is. It's as if Mozart reincarnated, and decided to become a jazz pianist!
The first half of the video is a masterclass pm how to do a jazz standard with swag, the second half is how to groove like a pro doing a perfect progression of epicness and the ending is one of the best culminations of a piano groove i've ever heard.
if you ever try to listen to all the different videos of this song, you will begin to realise that he played it differently everytime..and each time ,you jaw dropped all the same..i love this guy..
One of my friends from Malaysia turned me on to Joey and now I can't get enough of this genius. I love his dynamics and his choices of material. I have to get my "Joey-fix" at least once or twice a day. What I really like best is watching other performers watch Joey and being amazed at his ability. His talent is certainly a gift from God and from God to us.
I JUST CAN'T UNDERSTAND THIS. How is this even possible? There is something going on here so far out of the ordinary that it begs explanation. What a beautiful cat he is!!!!!!!
Yeah, I think that’s the point-there is no explanation. We’re seeing here the very rare phenomenon of “genius.” Word gets overused, but this kid is the genuine article.
I heard this young man play this piece on PRI this afternoon and I was blown away! I only heard him playing at first and then came to hear he was only 11 years old. He is mature beyond his years in his attitude and his interpretation of the music he plays. He has a bright future ahead and I look forward to following his career path!
As someone with an appreciative background in music theory, jazz, and well musical "standards" I cannot explain in words how much hope Joey has brought to me as now I feel we're not completely musically doomed yet.
A perfect example of raw talent. My personal experience with this type of talent was playing with Larry Carlton, jazz guitarist, when he was 14. He was, at that time, studing under guitar legend Joe Pass. I played with Larry for several years and I was never confused as to who was the very best musician when we hit the stage.
I think the fact that he is 11 (or 12 now) is the most deceiving fact for anyone trying to redo this piece with the mindset that if a child could rearrange a song like this then i could also, and after an hour fighting with the piano they just collapse realising that it was done by an old jazz soul disguised as an 11 y.o boy, for example, me.
The first time I heard "My Favourite Things" was from "The Sound of Music," many years ago. A few days ago, it was "Sakamichi no Apollon" ("Kids On The Slope") with its jazzy take on the original source. Earlier today, it was Coltrane's take, and *right now*, I'm listening to this boy's version. I must say that it really is quite a good rendition, and the improvisation rocks, too.
I want to make an endless-loop recording of this piece so that i can listen to it 24 hours ... yes, even while I'm sleeping! You're incredible Joey! God created you as a gift for the rest of the humanity!
Wow I have always loved my Favorite things in its pure and simple form and have heard loads of jazz interpretations but my this one tops them all. Its like the ideas of a bunch of jazz pianists put together in one act. This kid is super genius
Bravo to Joey and a huge thank you to his parents and all those who are supporting Joey on his musical journey. What a bright light and amazing talent this youngster is.
Budding Jazz Pianist from Asia, Kid Alexander. I admire your ability in Jazz. I admire Bobby Enriquez of The Philippines.A Jazz Pianist of Oriental Class. I salute you both !
Oh Joey, what a sophisticated composition on “My Favorite Things”. Not only that, but you truly are a genius in composing a song in many different ways yet keeping them as your own stories and songs. Keep playing and God bless you Joey
Wow. That second solo was (especially) phenomenal. Truly I have never come across better evidence for the divine than Joey. More than any religious text or theistic argument, this boy's talent proves a compelling case for the existence of a power greater than ourselves.
The way Joey played the last minute made me think he saw the scene in movie where Julie Andrews character, Maria, sings the song to the Von Trapp kids ... during a thunderstorm. Bravo, Joey. Love your version of this song.
My only question is, how can he get any better than this?! I see this was posted 8 years ago, once I’m done listening I’m going to look up what he’s doing now.
Dear Joey Congratulation for your Grammy Award 2016 Nomination. Best regard to your Father Denny Norman Sila, since we were at the same PSKD 4 Junior High School(Jakarta, Indonesia)
HERE COMES JOEY ALEXANDER, EMILY BEAR - LOOK OUT! :) You're a teen- ager now and Joey's only eleven ... Not sure he was composing and appearing on TV at age 5 or 6 as you were on ELLEN, but he's on his way to the Newport Jazz Festival this summer, while you're heading to Stuttgart, Germany to appear at the Jazz Open 2015 (3 Nights at 3 different venues). So, no head- to- head jazz improvisation combat yet, but .... Who knows :0 !! :) Blessings, and GO, KIDS, GO!!!

Just proves that miracles ... don't always happen :) ]! These wonderkids are such an inspiring and valuable resource for our world :) :)
+derrick howlett I have heard the rendition of Over the Rainbow and My Favorite Things from both artists and I must say Joey has more maturity in playing jazz albeit younger age. The feel, expressions, the voicing, the melodies and improvisation he generates are beyond compare for such a young age. Just my 2 cents. Anyway, these two young musicians are truly blessings for our generation and the future of jazz.
Many commenters are making the assumption that he went through the normal course of learning and just sped up. I think it's a different case. The way he picked this up seems to have a different paradigm than most of us know. I don't know the extent of his knowledge of theory, reading music, or things that are more academic. The future of jazz is in safe hands.
Haha very true sir! So talented. great name too
We hope so. May he never fall to despair.

Along with the impressive harmony and rhythmic ideas, there's a remarkable "adult" sensibility and sophistication here.
Exactly
go read some satan literature. Age doesn't give wisdom.
Joey's playing is beyond the prodigy stage. He is inhabited by something supernatural.
@@marquamfurniture Feels like the spirit of one of the past jazz pianist possessed the young boy.
He already has it all and at 11 years old with a long career ahead who knows what he will come up with and be.
Absolutely stunning.
I keep coming back to this one. One of the best versions of this tune. Looking at the child playing it so masterfully is frankly bewildering.
