would be nice to compare 2 pictures on the same focal length (eg. 35mm), one of them made with a prime and one with a zoom. i have not really seen that in any of these prime vs zoom videos. it feels like a missed opportunity.

@Long Johnson It's not just a matter of being able to shoot in low light, it's about being able to shoot extremely shallow DOF for a different look altogether. There is a very big difference between an 85mm shot at f/1.2 and f/2.8, for example.

It depends on the persons style. Originally, I got into photography/videography to capture examples of what Should be seen. Reach, macro, wide-angle, bokeh, AF performance can lead you to select the perfect lens for your task. You can't reach with a 20mm, you can't wide-angle with 200mm. You can't have great portraits unless you smear the background out with f/1.8 and say 135mm. You can't take photos of insects or things super super small unless you have a Macro lens. You can't take a great interior or Huge building exterior w/ little room to stand back unless you are say 14mm. I got a lens for Every single purpose. I used to have cases for Each lens until I got so many I just put them all in 1 bag. I used to carry only 1 lens in a backpack but you are limited to what it does best. I have 2 gimbals for video, a slider, and a Jib. I hardly use any of them anymore. I also have many drones as you need to be able to capture in the air.

I feel like to described what to get first a little backwards by saying to shoot zooms and then move into primes. I may be an outlier, but I started on a shoe-string budget and found that primes were the more affordable choice for getting those wider apertures that made my photographs look more professional. Then, as I acquired more money, I was then able to afford the Trinity of 16-35, 24-70, and 70-200 at 2.8 that would cover most common focal lengths but still provide a nice shallow depth of field at 2.8. I can’t tell you how many hired shoots I did with just a nifty fifty 1.8 over 4 years as I saved my money for the trinity.
That being said, I did really love letting friends or family use my gear and when they ask how to zoom, needing to explain that they can walk forward or back.
Good video though. I enjoyed the perspective from you.

@@lynettelove191 hey lynette:) happy that you ask / I try to help as much as I can. 24 1.4 must be a beast, but its not that easy to use. Things like distortion if you get close would be annoying for me. And 1 thing, only cause you buy 1.4 doesn’t mean you always use on 1.4 / this number tells only the quality of light and sometimes it just for high range people if you buy the originals. Your right, some of these people use it for landscape, but a lot for people too. But not that way you maybe you have looked for. If you really want that bokeh monster you should get a 85MM. You must only know if you always have that space. That was my problem cause i only wanted own 1 single lens where i can do all my paid jobs like event, portrait and street photography. I was already leaning more to 45-35 cause with this lens you can get the whole scene and still if you want nice bokeh you can get nearer without a big distortion. After having this one for a long time I could afford a second one that was the sigma 24-70 2.8 / I only bought it cause a videographer told me this is the GO lens for paid works. He was right but not totally. I had bokeh, but still for my option not enough, and the low light. I had big trouble at my last event cause it was light like in a cinema without light 🤣 just some spots where with lights.
      This made me buying a 85 1.8
It’s a great lens now for low light situations and it was close a 3rd price of that sigma. But if you have no space to stand away far enough (~3m) you are Fckd.

In my experienced, getting used prime lenses, even ones that are 10 years old, are just as good as the new ones. But zoom really suffers when you go with anything older. The exceptions in my experience (with Canon EOS R and RF adapter) is that the Canon EF 50 1.2 L is horrible on new cameras (I went with Sigma 50 1.4 instead) and the Canon EF 70-200 2.8 L is pretty much the same as their new RF version, just a bit heavier and a tiny bit slower to focus. But anything else, go new for zoom and used for prime.

You won't be able to see if the photo was done with a prime lens or a zoom, when you use the same aperture and focal length, unless you do things like I mentioned in my original comment.

    • @joylox
      @joylox Год назад

That explains a lot actually. I've tried a lot of older, used and adapted lenses from EF to RF for the R and R7, and the fixed ones seem to hold up much better. My favourites being the Sigma 50 1.4 and the Canon 100 Macro. The only zoom lens that held up to a 30MP+ camera that I tried was the 70-200 f2.8, which is known as one of the best Canon lenses, and for good reason. I was really surprised that the Canon EF 50 1.2 was one of the worst lenses I tried with the RF adapter, and that little tiny lens had so much praise when it came out. That's why I love having an in-person store that sells used gear, so I could trade things in and try out lenses on my own camera in person, and get a feel for what it's like before buying it. My dad sticks to Canon L series everything, but they're not always the best choice in my opinion when Sigma, Tamron, and others make great quality lenses. The only downside to me sticking with the R series is that they all need the adapter. But that came with my camera, so it's no big deal to me, as long as I know where it is (usually I keep it on my 50, and swap it as needed).

While the zoom lenses have indeed gotten much better, the prime lenses also got much better. They have tons of corrections and their sharpness is insane. The implies your prime lens can effectively zoom by cropping, and you will have the same sharpness as the zoom lens zoomed in, although admittedly you will not make the 35-150 range.

  • @thispak

If I had to choose the one lens to use for the rest of my life, I'm gonna stick with my Sony 35mm f1.4 GM prime lens for all situations. In my personal opinion, it's the most versatile prime lens available. Better than the 50mm because it's too tight for indoor shots such as events or real estate photography and it's a better option than the 24mm because it's too wide. The 35mm f1.4 can get the job done in any situation, you just have to move around more.

I agree. When I was shooting film back in the 70s-90s, the 35mm was my favorite "normal" lens, because it frequently let me "get it all in" when in close situations. That doesn't mean I wouldn't switch it out for an 80mm when I could, but my Rokkor 35 was a champ.

I'd definitely argue that starting with a 35mm or 50mm Prime is significantly better for beginners, I'd even go as far as to say starting with a full manual lens is the way to go, too. It helps you learn to use the lense properly and understand what all those fancy motors are doing inside as well as forces you to think more creatively about how you're going to compose your shot. Also keeps you from just pressing the shutter button a million times hoping something good comes out.
I think starting with a zoom lens is a huge part of why you see so many cameras end up online for sale.

Beginners doing what kind of photography with what camera. There is no one size fits all here. The whole discussion is humorous to someone like me who has been shooting for more than 50 years. We took great photos in the 1990's. No one told us that our prints were too soft. But the zoom lenses today are better than most prime lenses of 1990. With a little time perspective, its all so humorous.

    • @TheAliceQuo

You completely missed the entire point of what I was saying. Quality has literally nothing to do with it, but I can defend against your other points as well if you insist.
I'd argue your camera body is effectively irrelevant to the question unless you wanna argue about crop vs full-frame sensors, even then, just get a 50mm equivalent 🤦
And if you're a beginner the last thing you should be thinking about is "what kind of photography am I going to do". Buy a cheap, manual, 50mm lens, and expirament. Get used to your camera, it's settings, how everything works to create the images you want. Once your familiar with it your prime manual lens is going to push you to think creatively about what your photographing.
No beginner should go out and buy an 800mm wildlife lens, no matter how stubborn you want to be about it that's just a stupid idea, and for basically everything else, you can make a 50mm lens work without issue.
In-fact, I spent an entire year doing all types of photography with nothing but a $100, full-manual, 50mm, F1.2 lens when I bought my first camera and the only time it was restricting was in wildlife situations where physically getting closer was impossible, or I couldn't manual focus fast enough for the moving animal.

If you are totally clueless about your interests and have absolutely no idea whether you want to shoot architecture, landscapes, portraits, wildlife, landscapes, macro photos of flowers, or crime scenes, then of course just get any old thing and just start shooting a bit of everything to figure out how a camera and lens works.
On the other hand, if one knows where their interests lie, it may be advisable for them to consider what camera and lenses are best suited for what they are interested in from the get-go in order that hone their skills on suitable equipment.
If one first spends a bit of time educating themselves over the internet, there will be a lot less guessing and "just pressing the shutter button a million times hoping something good comes out."

You nailed my thoughts exactly when you said for beginners to buy a zoom lens and experiment with various focal lengths. I did not know that I can use Ligthroom to help determine which one I seem to be using more often. One big reason I bought the 17-70 was the constant F2.8 focal length but I can already tell that I would like to have a lens with F1.8 or 1.4 handy.

I own two 35mm lenses. One lens is a f1.8 aperture. The other is a f2 aperture. The f2 was a Christmas present from my daughter. I also own 3 zoom lenses that range from 17mm to 300mm focal lengths.. When I'm indoors, or shooting in low light, I mostly use the prime lenses. When I'm outdoors, I'm taking either landscape photos, or wildlife photos, so I generally use the zoom lenses. I do use my 35mm lenses outdoors, but only under certain conditions. So honestly I don't have a preference to which pictures are better because I basically use whatever lens is necessary to get a good picture. However I will admit that I like the pictures of the model on the beach best.

For portrait work you don't need to be fast most of the time with your distance to the subject. Thats where a zoom comes in handy like sports/wildlife (altough the latter is 95% 600mm or 840 with the 1.4TC for me on a 200-600). But for portrait or anything static, the primes rule. Better subject isolation, better background control and waaaay better bokeh

You introduced multiple inconsistencies that have nothing to do with the actual camera lenses.

56mm 1.4 from Sigma on MFT is perfect - light and affordable . Match that with a 25mm 1.8 and you are good to go. The 1.8 can stay on the camera all the time . For a zoom in MFT I would look to either the f4 or f2.8 pro zooms. Since I like to travel light then the choice comes down to what will fit in a Billingham digital camera bag . The days of using big - weighty bodies and lenses is something I only want in the studio and then perhaps a 6x7 digital body .
In conclusion - there is no perfect body or lens, only the combination that works for you and your style of photography . The key is to get out there and shoot as often as you can and select a sample of your best work and put it in a book . Don’t leave it to amassing images on line, as that is just like data and identical to just producing lovely negatives in the film days and not printing the best of them: all in all that is a tad sad , if you get my drift .
    Good video guys .

Now I only shot in prime lense 50mm and I found myself knew without looking at a camera to know what a picture would look like and when it wouldn’t work the way I wanted. It is so true that it forces you to think the distance and the scene itself. Many times I wish I had a zoom lense with me!

I have primes because they're faster lenses. I have lenses at f 1.2 and at 1.4 as well as 1.8. this allows me to shoot in lower light as well as even giving me more shallow depth of field. If you're doing straight photography the primes give you a smaller less noticeable profile.

YES, "You begin to think in those focal lengths." [5:45] This is one of my main reasons for choosing primes, and you're one of the few I've seen say this on youtube. Since I tend to mostly use 85mm-ish lenses, I got the Sigma 24-35mm f/2 lens for a single wide-angle lens with a fast aperture, still the same price as the Sigma 24mm or 35mm f/1.4. I got lazy and would zoom to frame the subject and lose track of the background, and then what was the point of the wide-angle lens, go back to the 85mm. Now I tend to use either the 35mm or 24mm and avoid confusing myself with 28mm or 32mm.

I find the modern high-end zoom-lens to be of such quality that the gap between Prime vs Zoom is being very narrow now unless you go with a crappy entry-level zoom or kit lens. That's why my current bag consist of:
    - Tamron 24-70 F2.8 VC G2
    - Canon RF 70-200 F2.8 IS
    - Samyang 85mm F1.4
The only reason I bought the Samyang was for the F1.4 and have my "official portrait lens" as otherwise I can have the 85mm into the 70-200mm already, and F2.8 ain't that bad already but also that prime Samyang is sooo lightweight and fun to use.

I currently use two cameras, and what I've been doing is have a 50mm and a 24-105, but the 50 is clearer, and f1.4 is nicer than f4 for some things. The big exception I'd say, at least within the Canon world, is the 70-200 f2.8 which is so beautiful! I like how with the R7, and likely other new cameras, it shows what focal length you have, so while I'm shooting with a zoom lens, I can see what it would look like and if I should switch to a prime lens to get that extra aperture.
In my opinion, the best time to have a zoom lens, is extreme telephoto for wildlife. If you look for an animal with a 600mm lens, and while you're changing settings, that animal moves, good luck finding that at 600. Where with something like the Sigma 150-600, you can zoom out, find the subject, and zoom back in again without walking around and making noise.

I use a crop sensor camera (Fuji X-T5), all off which have a 'crop factor' that makes zooms stretch further but also reduces their bokeh and subject separation. (The smaller sensor also means worse ISO results). Its zoom lenses have worse f-stop (aperture) than primes, so its zooms aren't great in low light and you can find yourself always trying to shoot at its longest focal lengths to try to squeeze-out better subject separation.
I SO much like using my premium Fuji 16-55 f2.8 but, for those reasons, I may one day be tempted over to full frame and an equivalent zoom on that.
