    Hollywood needs to learn that CG doesn't make a good movie. You have to build a compelling story with engaging characters that the CG complements. It all has to make sense for anything to be meaningful, otherwise it's just noise.

    • @RBeeMedia
      @RBeeMedia 5 лет назад +17

      CGI is a tool. The script, the story and the acting as the materials needed to build the whole thing. You should use CGI to HELP not do everything around CGI

    • @TrangleC
      @TrangleC 5 лет назад +2

      Yes, but then you have people complain that they want less human characters and less story and more monster fights in their Godzilla movie.
      I think there is room for both kinds of movies.
      Sometimes you just want the spectacle.
      Who goes to watch a movie like "2012" for example for the story or the characters?
      Criticizing a movie like that because it doesn't have enough story or character development, is like criticizing a ice cream sundae for not being nutritious enough.
      What you get out of a movie just differs from movie to movie. It doesn't even have to be just the extremes between serious drama and spectacle extravaganza.
      Even smaller, "quieter" movies can be all about the optics and the art style and the such.
      Take that Robbin Williams movie where he plays a dude who dies and then is in heaven. Forgot the name and too lazy to google it.
      Who watched that movie for anything else but for the optical treat of seeing a painting inspired version of heaven?
      Saying a movie needs a good story and CGI has to be a complementing tool and can't be the main attraction is just wrong.

    • @davidmcgill1000
      @davidmcgill1000 5 лет назад +6

      @@TrangleC It depends on the genre of the film. Nobody wanted to watch any of the Jurassic Park films for the boring human story. The whole point is to watch dinosaurs cause havoc, but there can't just be dinosaurs. The human story has to be there to explain why there are dinosaurs at all. Finding the balance between story and action is key. King Kong didn't start with an ape hanging off a building after all.

    • @TrangleC
      @TrangleC 5 лет назад +1

      @@davidmcgill1000 Yes, but in the end it is all subjective and relative.
      At the very least, dismissing CGI as just a tool that can only be there to support the story is too much of a sweeping simplification.
      There have always been movies where the story and the characters are the supporting element, only a thing the special effects, which are the real star, get hung on.
      And such movies can still be great and become beloved classics.
      You mentioned Jurassic Park, an even more extreme example is the original Blade Runner movie.
      It is a detective story where the detective basically does no detective work and where the antagonists have a goal, but then just get told they can't reach that goal and just give up.
      It basically has no story, no real character development, barely follows an act-structure but instead just meanders towards the end, the two characters who are having a love story, have no chemistry with each other and the protagonist acts more like a robot than the replicant characters.
      But none of that matters, because the movie oozes atmosphere, thanks to the special effects, art style and cinematography. Most people never even notice the flaws with the story and the characters.
      Long story short, my point is just that special effects, production design and just optics in general, can be the most important part of a movie and that doesn't automatically make the movie bad.
      It seems we agree on that point.

    • @TrangleC
      @TrangleC 5 лет назад +1

      @GMan5090 Both the original commenter and the first replier claimed that it is an absolute that CGI can't make a movie.
      I'm saying that is not the case.
      Where do you see a inconsistency with my argument?

    I have a nostalgic soft spot for the first one too and not just as a regular consumer who was too young to realize how dumb it was, but I also had kind of, sort of, around a few corners and by a few degrees, a family connection to it.
    Roland Emmerich had a lot of ties to the Film Academy Ludwigsburg, which is a small town in the south-west of Germany and the capital of the county where I was born and raised. When Emmerich made ID4, he took a lot of students and other guys from that film academy with him, to work on the effects. My uncle, who wasn't that much older than me and was more like a big brother to me, wasn't studying at the academy, but he was working as a camera assistant at the time and had a lot of contacts and ties to the academy. He knew many of the people who worked on ID4 personally and he was pretty proud of the movie and the fact that his buddies had made it to Hollywood and had worked on the biggest blockbuster in existence at the time.
    He dragged the whole family into the theater, paid for all our tickets and it was the first ever local premiere I ever attended, so it was a big deal.
    The whole thing makes me very melancholy, because he died at a relatively young age and this was one of the moments we shared that stuck in my memory.
    I know the movie is dumb and I know how stupid it is, but I have to admit, it always gives me a bit of a pang when I hear people like the Red Letter Media guys shit all over it, hehehe.

The plan of bringing the aliens down was brilliant, the emotion shown in both before they arrived and after was so convincing sand you can feel it. That speech Pullman delivered in the 90’s film is still strong, I still get goosebumps and movies me to cheering. As for the second film, all I can say is that it could’ve been better. The problem with it is nobody asked for a sequel. They made a massive AAA blockbuster budget hollywood sequel- to a 20 year old movie that while massively popular, nobody ever asked for a sequel to. So that alone was a massive strike against it. Plenty of people saw it as yet another "hollywood is out of ideas and therefore mining old movies for sequels" and then saw all the cgi, lackluster casting, and their eyes glazed over and they skipped it

      From what I understand Will Smith was negotiating in his contract to come back for Independence Day 2. Within the contract he was stipulating that for his involvement it would require that his biological son play the part in the film grown-up and he would have pretty the Hefty price tag Associated to it. And at the end of the day producers are the budget never made an agreement to sign him back on for that. Not to mention the previous film the two it done together after Earth in 2013 was not a successful film so they're more than likely they didn't want to take the risk bringing on Will Smith's son who does not put butts in seats.

    Hollywood doesn't seem to want to consider the many science fiction books out there that would make great sci-fi movies. There is so much untapped, potentially good flicks remaining in books only. They seem obsessed in making sequel after sequel, or redoing other movies and old story ideas, rather than looking at the treasure trove of material that has only been read, for now. When they remake old movies or sequels, they seem to fail or are rarely or barely successful. A couple of books that I think would be refreshingly DIFFERENT stories, styles and ideas to consider, "Genesis" by W.A. Harbinson, and all of the stories in Larry Niven's Known Space series starting with the novel "World of Ptavvs", "Protector", "Neutron Star" thru "Ringworld" and "Ringworld Engineers". Then there's many Arthur C. Clarke stories like his sequels to the movie hits "2001: A Space Odyssey" & "2010" like "2061: Odyssey Three" and "3001: The Final Odyssey". And with the recent strange object called Oumuamua, that entered and left our solar system in a bizarre way and being compared by many to Clarke's "Rendezvous With Rama", why hasn't anyone capitalized on that one? With today's CGI, these stories and more would be a perfect time to do now. I would like to see a Pierson's Puppeteer come to life on the screen so long as they use Bonnie Dalzell's renderings.

They're all filming simultaneously and are already paid for. Pretty much out of pocket. Basically, nothing is stopping this train of films, they're coming whether people see them or not.
      These are films no one asked for, and is just Cameron making films that he wants to make. If it doesn't make money it won't matter since at the end of the day Cameron put out his work and vision that he wanted to make. It's just Cameron being Cameron. Only people it'll really matter to are the studios/distributors, but at the end of the day, Cameron is still rolling in the money.

    I'm honestly disappointed that we won't get Independence Day 3, because the first Independence Day movie had so much potential as a franchise. I didn't hate Resurgence, but it was certainly not as good as I hoped it would be. Even so, I still enjoyed Resurgence to a certain extent. Now we'll never get to see that intergalactic war between humans and those aliens, with humans finally defeating those aliens once and for all (obviously). Also, if I remember correctly, they left the fate of Will Smith's character unknown but thought to be dead just so that they could bring him back for Independence Day 3 if he changed his mind. Honestly, if they weren't going to make an Independence Day 3 movie to turn the Independence Day franchise into a trilogy, they should have never made a second Independence Day movie in the first place, because the first Independence Day movie was a perfect movie on its own. The first Independence Day movie didn't need a sequel. Not every movie needs a sequel. Not even every financially successful movie needs a sequel.

The huge effing planet-grabber was so STUPID! It had its own gravity, and we’re worried about the molten core, ultimately? Then HOW THE HELL DID IT PULL AWAY WITHOUT DISTURBING EARTH’S ORBIT? BLARGH!!!🤬

      I still don't understand how can any producers read the script and give it the okay! The only good part was when the leader or queen of the aliens came out she was huge that part was good the rest of the movie totally suck ass!
