14 Monitors on a Single Windows 8 PC with USB Graphics Adapters

  • ** IMPORTANT - the video shown above was a demonstration of what was technically possible at the time it was produced, however it is not a recommended or supported configuration by Plugable. To expand further, most modern Windows systems with built-in USB 3.0 host controllers have internal limitations in regard to how many USB devices can be properly recognized, even with the addition of USB hubs. Often adding a large number of USB devices to a modern USB 3.0 system will not work (this demonstration was done with a USB 2.0 only system). As a result, the maximum number of displays Plugable officially supports adding to a Windows system with our DisplayLink-based products is six. **
    Original description:
    --------------------------------
    With Plugable USB Graphics adapters and the latest driver from DisplayLink (7.5 M1), it's now possible to connect 14 or more monitors to a single Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 PC.
    Most users will only be using one or two additional monitors attached with USB graphics adapters. This is a new DisplayLink feature and is still in early testing. Users may see slow enumeration of attached adapters beyond the previous 6 adapter limit. Our 14 monitor setup took 15 minutes on each restart to bring all the monitors up, but was reasonably snappy after that.

    Man your company has such great support. I went and posted a long detailed message in your forum and your staff got back to me with a great answer quickly. I normally would never go to a manufactures website to do this because i get ignored to much but i could tell by your amazon reviews you have awesome support. For a non-technical person like me I would much rather pay a much higher price for a product with this kind of support. From what i can tell your prices are also great, so maybe raise them :) - Anyway i'll be buying a few of your products shortly, and I know if im having issues getting them working you will hold my hand to help me get it sorted out. And that's just with 14 screens, this couldn't really handle 1 to 2 screens if you're using them, but to see that 14 can be used that's great, but Google Chrome alone would blow through half your ram on that tiny cpu

      Thanks for asking, Unfortunately, this video is a proof of concept and not a setup we would recommend for everyday use. Additionally, our adapters are unable to create a video wall, instead they allow for each monitor to be unique. A video wall would need the display image to span across the array of screen, which our adapters cannot do we expect it to work with additional software. I am sorry that we cannot be of more help.

      Utilizing all of the individual displays as a single display is not possible with out individual USB 3.0 graphics adapters, as they do not support EyeFinity or any other applicable single display array system. Due to the limitations of USB 3.0, we do not offer any cable lengths rated about 3 feet. I hope this information helps, please let me us know if you have any additional questions by reaching out to us directly at support@plugable.com.

    just got 8 of the usb>VGA + 2 USB3 7 port hubs from your amazon site in the UK (delivered on 24 december 2015),
    only note i would say is you need 8gb of ram or even more depending on how many screens you have and what content is on each screen (using over 4GB on this laptop so it was making it choke a lot and thats just with 8 screens, not 14 as your showing), i think 8GB should be enough, but going to get 2x8gb just to remove ram from the limitation completely (if the laptop will take 2x 8GB) i may end up moving to a desktop system just with a massive UPS setup (power goes off often)
    next would be CPU again depends on how much activity there is on each browser on each screen (i am using a i3 Laptop at 3ghz with HT and seems to be holding up well)

      According to the specifications of the Dell Inspiron 5000 series, you have two USB 3.1 Type-A ports, and one USB 3.1 Type-C ports. You can use these ports to connect graphics adapters or USB docks.

      It should be noted that while this is possible under the right circumstances, we do not support more than six 1080P displays connected in such a way.
      If you could please contact us directly so that we can gather some additional details about the equipment you're planning to use that would be great. In order to do so can you please email support@plugable.com.

    Hello,
    I have an HP EliteDesk 800 G1 with I7 3.4gz, 32gb ram, 2gb Radeon GPU and 256 M.2 SSD installed. I was viewing your video and im interested in doing the same with my desktop if possible. I currently use it for live streaming and need to add about 6 additional monitors to so i can expand my live view to other displays. Would that be possible with the desktop i have and if so what do you recommend? Your help is appreciated.

    • @Plugable
      @Plugable  Год назад

      Hello and thanks for asking!

      While the adapters in this video (as well as our USBC-768H4, the 4 display version) could work in your setup, we would caution against using video on each display. The adapters in this video use a software driver to render your external displays, and this can quickly result in a decrease in overall performance.

      If you wish to use the adapters to add additional screens for more passive tasks, such as reading stream chat or similar this configuration should work well for you!

      My apologies for not having a better answer for you at this time. Please let us know how we can be of additional assistance.

    Are there any problems other than Latency?, Less colours?, less framerate?

    • @Plugable
      @Plugable  9 лет назад

      iskremape Thanks for asking - there's no loss of color depth. Framerates for motion video can absolutely effectively slow down, depending on how many pixels are changing -- all pixels that change must go over the USB bus. When no pixels are changing, no data is going over the USB bus.

    • @theonlybuster
      @theonlybuster 9 лет назад

      iskremape These work pretty well for simple desktop applications. But if you're hoping to extend the desktop for the purpose of gaming, it's only going to frustrate you. We use these USB adapters in my office and they suffice their purpose.
      Just make sure you get the USB 3.0 as opposed to USB 2.0 adapters. I've had quite a few headaches dealing with those.

      +Plugable
      I am running an NVIDIA Quadro K2000m dedicated graphics card, with 16gb RAM, and a i7 processor. I have 4 monitors running via this robust dedicated graphics card. I have been trying the plugable usb adaptors this week to try and get a total of 5-8 monitors. However no matter how many I use via USB the mouse jumps around instead of moving slowly rendering the monitor useless for me. It would be fine if it just had slowness on the USB monitors, but it actually slows down all the monitors even the DP monitors that are directly connected to my fast dedicated graphics card. It's almost as if the slow connection through USB forces all the other monitors to slow down to it's speed. The weakest link theory? I would love to hear if there was a solution to this problem. Does the refresh rate change to that of the slowest monitors? The only solution I can think of now is to get a second computer. Of course I would rather not do that if I don't have to. Is there any way to tweak things?

    • @Plugable
      @Plugable  9 лет назад

      Michael Gustavson Hi Michael, it sounds like something unusual is happening, perhaps related to the combination of DisplayLink + the special graphics card which has 4 graphics outputs. Could you send us debug info to take a look what it might be? Here's how: plugable.com/support/plugdebug Thanks!

We have one of the best hubs for both charging and data, it's our USB3-HUB7BC with 60W power supply: plugable.com/products/usb3-hub7bc and we have a USB 2.0 version which uses less endpoints so is better for large numbers of devices plugable.com/products/usb2-hub7bc Thanks for asking!

    If the pc or monitors were power cycled, would each one retain its identity when powered back on?

    • @Plugable
      @Plugable  5 лет назад

      Under most circumstances yes, unless the monitor isn't properly sending its unique identification information via EDID: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extended_Display_Identification_Data
      Or if there is a driver issue identity can be lost.
