The Difference Between Fender Stratocaster, Mustang, and Jaguar Pickups
The Fender Stratocaster, Fender Jaguar, and Fender Mustang Pickups are a lot closer than you think. The history and variations in these pickups is also interesting.

I'd like to see you compare the differences in Fender and G&L pickups. It'd be cool to see what Leo fender's ideas developed into, what problems they solved, and what cons came with the changes. There's some interesting stuff like the Z coils in G&L which I'd love to understand more about. It might be interesting to see how the wiring changed too.
Bro, you are killing it with these videos, keep it up.
P90 vs Jazzmaster please
can you do humbucker versus mini-humbucker versus firebird PU? :) Love these
I second! Always been curious how the firebird compares with other mini’s
hey Dave liked your comment. It's exactly what I asked in another video of his of Dylan's when he was doing the tele pickups. Anyway all the best to you a happy New year and a healthy one and yep firebird mini humbuckers to regular mini humbuckers la la la love it all sincerely yours, but the blind guitarist
Great info. Love what you’re doing here Dylan!
Thanks for this really fun and most if all educational video! Dylan, you rock!
Dylan I am loving your videos! I enjoy the depth in the explanation. Keep it up!
I would appreciate a comparison between P90s and Jazzmasters p’ups next! Keep up the great work! Love what you’re doing with your channel.
Yes Jazzmaster and P90's, P94
Maybe also include any info on the old Gretsch single’s which were Hum sized and typically compared to P-90’s?
p90 vs jazzmaster sounds like an idea do it yeah!
Thank you! it was so hard to find any information on the difference between these pickups!
Filtertron vs humbucker would be cool.
Second this!
I requested this video in my mind and here you already made it. Perfecto
I’ve learned so much from your channel. Subscribed!
Great video! P-90 vs JM, HB vs Mini HB, blade vs pole, Lindy Fralin split blades vs z-coils vs other noise cancelling designs
Very informative and useful. Thanks, Dylan! Yes, please! A P90/Jazzmaster comparison would be great!
Very interesting video. I own an original 1964 Fender Jaguar myself and I was always under the impression that the claw was added for additional shielding and I have seen this quoted as a so called fact many times. Your overview of the pickups seemed to make sense of the whole thing. Thank you for this.
I like it. Learned something I didn’t know about the Jag. I’ve loved mine and it absolutely works in the lane it was designed for.
I’ve always thought the pup design of the Jag was another throw back to Lap Steel’s and perhaps the claw is related in some way to steel’s, but in any case really interesting how they share so many parallels!
Thanks! Cheers! (Finishing my MacAllen single malt)
Cool vid, technical yet easy to understand. This is a cool video series
Hi, Dylan! Thank you for a very, very good video. I have a couple of old (63, 65) Jags and am aware of the theory behind the claws but never saw one with the guts out or never thought too much about it. Have you ever considered doing a video including Burns Tri-Sonic and/or Burns Rez-O-Matic pickups? Definitely out of the norm but IMHO, very interesting and outstanding in their own way. That Bourbon looked yummy! :-)
I’m really liking your channel! For future topics:
-Why did Fender use split (p bass style) pickup for there 12 strings electrics?
-How is a Fender Wide Range different from a Gibson humbucker?
V informative thanks
Thanks... good info.
Great Video! Would really be interested in the Hum vs mini!
I always wondered how a P90 would stand up to a Humbucker. Great video, got me thinking about getting a Jazzmaster and installing Jag pickups in it.
Thanks for all these vids. Im so much smarter for them.
Thanks for the video. I'd love to see humbucker/Filtertron and humbucker/mini humbucker/Firebird comparisons.
Greate video!
Your style is beyond compare, so human, so... Fantasic
Cheers man..
I like these videos in this format without the a/b comparisons just the technical/construction etc differences. Would like to see humbuckers vs mini humbuckers and also something about Gretch style pickups, filtertrons etc. Cheers
Now you've got me wanting to put Jaguar pickups in a strat.
Great video. Thanks for the education.
Aaaaargh! Stratocasters have a unique sound because they have strat pickups… just get a Jag for when you want all those tones!
Thanks! Good video. Good informations.
I'd like to see that Jazzmaster vs. P90, though it's something I've already looked into. One thing that would be interesting is the evolution of the pickups in Jazzmaster -> Jaguar -> Bass VI.
I agree with you that the A/B videos are kind of tiring. I'm more interested in the theoretical side, because it's more educational to know why something is different than to know how they are different. And yes, I think it's more useful to do the experimentation in person than watch a video of someone else doing it.
Keep up the good work, these videos are fun and educational.
A video on knockoff pickups would be nice. Kinda like the seymour duncan invader vs the dragonfire crusader, or seymour duncan hotrail vs coldrails.
As always, Dylan, more knowledge I never knew. Love getting smarter with your videos, keep it up man.
bravo dylan! bravo
Love the out at nite last ditch get the job done! Michters nice touch.
Off the subject, I just bought some Bourns pots, absolutely love the operation over the CTS pots, thank you!!
All the cts pots ive used felt scratchy
Can you do something on wiring the 5-way strat switch for coil splits with HSS and HH type strats...I think you would be very thorough....love your channel by the way
11:00 good point! it reminds me to invest more of my time into practicing :)
Good video. Comparing DeArmond 200k pickups with various variants. Also Goldfoils, etc. For fun you could compare the 200k pickups vs the GFS equivalent, including Surf 90s.
Day 5 of Dylan Talks Tone deep dive. And this channel is indeed deep.
Hi Dylan, based on this video showing the difference of each pickup and the purpose of its design. What about your pickups ? Did you build a different variety of pickups that can match each output as the ones mentioned ? I am planning to upgrade pickups in some of my guitars in the new few months and I am interested to know the variety of your pickups. Thank you and great video as always.
Would really like to see humbucker/filtertron comparo.
Lipstick, Jazzmaster vs P90, Fender Wide Range, gold foils, mini hums vs Firebird... I'd love to know about all of it. Really enjoying these vids. Really interesting stuff.
As for sound samples, yeah, it'd be a pain in the balls to do yourself, but if you have recommendations for "Wanna hear the difference between these pickups, go listen to this song by this guy and that song by that guy." But even that takes time to research, if you don't have specific examples off the top of your head.
Another excellent video. Please can you do a comparison of the two main Rickenbacker pickups, the pre 1970 "Toaster tops" and the post 1970 to present "Hi Gain" . Why do these pickups sound the way they do? Btw just for info my '13 Ric 330's pickups read 10.71 K ohms in the neck & 10.72 bridge .
What about active pickups? fender vs emg vs Seymour Duncan. Some day maybe. You seem to know a lot about electricity in pickups, why they sound like they sound etc. P.S enjoying your content, tons of useful info, great job Dylan
I’m more a style over content kinda guy (no, not really), so I’ll just say that the ambiance, lighting and whiskey are a huge step forward in presentation!
LOL I will be incorporating it more! I like the shooting at night for sure.... and the bourbon
DylanTalksTone do you happen to know what the specs are on the jaguar pickups in the original Squier Paranormal Cyclone? And will jaguar pickups fit in a standard Stratocaster cover?
Hey. This is pretty close to what I had suggested. Wow.👍🏻
The one thing you glossed over was, the Strat is a 25.5 scale, while the Mustang and Jaguar ore a 24 inch scale. Less tension and that will effect the tone as well.
True, yes, but I think that would just confuse more than it would enlighten.
@@markferguson3745 yeah but it’s a really important distinction
@@fatninjacatmatt The reason I prefer Jags to Jazzmasters. It makes even more of a difference with alternate and drop tunings.
Another dimension to this is that you really need to put heavier strings on shorter scale guitars which also effects the tone too.
Great video!
So…have you ever put the Jaguar “claws” on Stratocaster p’ups…?
Just curious.
I'd like to see a P90 vs JM. I'm pretty sure I already know the difference, but I'd like to hear your take on it 👍
Love your review of Michter's compared to Talisker
I like the idea of humbucker vs mini humbucker vs TV-Jones
I just discovered your channel a week ago, and I've learned so much about pickups, and guitar tech in general. This video specifically, I've always wondered what was the deal with the metal bits around the Jag pickups, now I know! Great info, keep it up! Also, I personally would rather hear the gear and components talked about rather than hear sound comparisons. There are plenty of videos with sound comparisons. I know how they sound. I just want to know why they sound that way, and you answer that!
i like and watch all your vid's
Would love to see a video between p90 and jazzmaster pickups
I’d love to see a comparison between Rickenbacker Hi-Gain and Toaster pickups.
Fender Precision bass pickup compared to the Fender Jazz bass pickup. Bright and punchy in the mids on P-bass warm and rounder on Jazz. How'd they do it? My 30 year bass player mind is intrigued.
G&L MFD's please! The 'normal' ones and the jumbo ones. And, of course, filtertrons (how do they compare with mini-humbuckers?). How many glasses of bourbon per video?
Were you getting Jaguar and Jazzmaster mixed up sometimes? It seems the terms were being used interchangeably. I've never owned either one of those Fenders and am trying to decide which one I'd want. Are the pickups on the two really that similar?
How about looking at Burns Tri-Sonic and Split-Sonic pickups?
Just saw your post...you'll find mine echos yours. :-)
My first decent electric guitar was a Burns Split Sonic & I’ve been a fan of Burns Guitars ever since.
Yasss!
P90 vs. Jazzmaster
New to the channel--awesome videos man. I bought my first telecaster a month ago before I started watching your videos which has now furthered my new love affair with this guitar.
True - can you try 2 P90s in a sportster hard-tail should sound clean as they don't get ridden much thanks,
Could you explain goldfoils please? I'm very interested in them thanks
These vids are just great. Ever see Johan Segborns channel?
Don't mess wit' 'dat claw, man!
i gotta try that Bourbon.
How does fender make a single coil noiseless pickup?
Weren’t all of these also the first time Fender introduced rw/rp sets to give the hum bucking effect?
So which way does the claw go? Nobody seems to know
Do one on stacked aka noseless and hummbuckers, how are they different or the same ?
Awesome video, awesome channel, insta-subscribe.
I want a tele pickup in mustang size. Any recommendations guys.
P90 vs. Jazzmaster pickups please!
How come there is no humbucker with a jaguar claw? What is the deal with Lace Sensors and the "comb" thing in the middle? How come no one ever made a P-90 humbucker"? Tell me everything sensei!
How about single coil hum bucking PUs?
Where three magnets and coils sit side by side with complimentary three with reverse magnets and reverse wind.
P90 versus Staple pickup? Please. Thanks, Shally
The dou sonic pickups were flush and the slugs protruded thru the bottom plate.
I've seen some mustang's with the same pickups
p90 vs hb size p90
and what about Charlie Christian pups?
I think the nighttime scotch/bourbon videos are my favorite. If you’re into heavily peated scotches try bruichladdich port Charlotte, that’s my current favorite and it has some characteristics in common with Talisker.
I bought a jag recently with the intent of putting p90s in it, but I’ve been surprised by the Jaguar pickups. Much more tele character than I expected, and they can handle distortion MUCH better than a strat pickup.
I think the whole reason to buy a Jaguar is the pick ups, I would NEVER consider replacing them. They give the Jag it’s unique sound - that and the tone switches that allow so many variations in tone.
Man! I got a tele, 2 strats and an sg. But i really want a stang. Cobain would be nice but id settle on a classic vibe
The vintage modified and the classic vibes are really nice
A really good bare bones video without all the ekstra bling as fill up.
Standard vs mini humbuckers.. yes please. P90 vs Jazzmaster.. yes please. But personally, I'd like to know your POV & how you'd explain P-rails. I don't know of another pickup that made from coupling 2 existing single coils to create a humbucker.
We did all that.
Because you can't buy a Jaguar single size humbucking pickup I would like to build a humbucking pickup to put in my Jaguar. Can you take the guts out of a Fender Jaguar pickup and build the Jaguar pickup into a single coil humbucking pickup? To do this I would take the guts out of a single size humbucking Stratocaster pickup and put it into the claw of the Fender Jaguar pickup. Is this possible?
I think tonekraft just start selling flat top mustang bobbins. Fb group im in had the same kind of discussion going on.
What about the Champ lapsteel? Same as Mustang/Duo Sonic? I know that the Stringmaster 8-string pickups are taller... not sure if the Deluxe 6 pickups are taller too... but, of course, they're RWRP, like the Stringmasters. Junior Brown's Stevens Guit-Steel has the RWRP 6-string bridge pair, I believe he used vintage Mustang pickups.
The Telecaster bridge pickup is a near copy of the Champion Lap Steel ( which came first ) .
I had a japanese 1993 jaguar, it was my main guitar for 15 years, over time i had got a couple of others, and had decided i really wanted something with big high power humbuckers, and sold my Jaguar, then because i had to make some space, it was the single worst decision ever, it took me til 2 years ago to find something that i enjoyed as much, fender again haha, but i would still prefer to have my old japanese jaguar, nothing sounds better with a big muff and a morley wah... and an old mesa Mk2 A/B, which i had to sell because the housse next door wouls shake just turning the mesa on.
jazzmaster vs p90 vs humbucker size p90 ??
You didn't mention that mustang neck pickups are wound backwards (opposite of the bridge) or "rewound) to be quieter or noise cancelling when both pickups are on.
yeah that depends on the year and is not mustang specific. That's a fender wide thing
Humbucker Vs mini humbucker!
I would like to know how size of pole pieces relates to tone, signal strength, and signal focus (I.e one string sounding per pole piece) Earnie Ball and music man basses have huge diameter pole pieces. What would the net effect of pole pieces regular diameter but say 2” long? Thanks as always for sharing your knowledge
What does magnet mass have to to with above mentioned properties? Is there any reason a person would want to broaden the magnetic field to then try to limit, shape, or otherwise Manipulate it via shielding such as the “claw” you mentioned in the mustang pickups.
Or dial it back with pots/capacitors
I'm more of Rye guy, but Cheers!
P90 vs. Jazz please.
Old wide range vs. new wide range humbucker
I think pick-up comparisons are cool, like you say tho just play the guitars.
Ok but why does the jag have less mids, bass or "balls" compared to the strat?? Teles have more bottom end than strats but Jags have even less bottom end? Anderson blindfold test shows this also. Thanks so much for this
The scale of the instrument acts on the tone A LOT, my vintage Jazzmaster is as "badass" as a Strat or a Tele.
@@Madeguydo bruh this isn't even about jazzmasters, I have one too and it's pretty obvious even unplugged that it's closer to a strat and tele. Saw your earlier comment too, nothing to do with the cultural aspect just purely sound. This is about jaguars. I agree with you that scale length plays a large role, and the lack of lows may be attributed to putting lighter twangier strings on a shorter scale guitar. I can also see 1meg pots as a major reason, letting more treble through that human ears tend to focus on. But my question was more about the extent jag pickups might play in giving Jaguars that janglier more bitey character compared to strat pups, or even compared to the other attributes of a jag in creating the whole sound (my buddy has a traditional one and there's definitely a difference, even with 13s and the strangle switch off). I was simply hoping Dylan might have some insights into what makes a Jag sound distinct, given the importance of pup construction, scale length, bridge structure, electronics, etc.
@@hiroprotagonitis yeeeah, I kind of messed up there. I realised I was being a prick and just wanted to bail, basically. ¯\(°_o)/¯
P-90 vs Jazz master pickup vs Jazzmaster pickup, GibsonP-90 vs Moisrite P-90
yep just like date before me Dylan I'd like to see a difference between the firebird humbuckers mini humbuckers regular mini humbuckers and the difference between the echo mini firebird humbuckers and the ceramic newer versions or that's a tongue twister sincerely yours, Bob the blind bedroom
We just did that video.
cool i am on a youtube video! appreciate your answer, totaly understand! but i was more interested by how saddle or pick up are affect the guitar sound more than tone of only the pick up
i am more on the "reasearch part of" searching why a guitar sound in a specifique way!!
i know that the best way to choose a guitar is to test it , but that s was not my point.
i would like to know what the origin of the tone, what affect more the final sound, saddle wood pick up? totallly understand that you can t do it! buti allways want to ear a gibson with strat pick up or and gibson humbucker on a strat to see how much pick up change the tone!
but i know too that if i want a jag sound or a gibson sound the fastest way is to buy an original one! but my point was just to ear howevery part affect a guitar sound just on a sound "reasearch" view!i am interested by "how it work"
I have seen various makers try these exact “mashups” using LP construction with Strat pups and so on. Have a look at boutique makers like Fano and others. They’ve dug deep on these ideas. Several sound examples on the ol’ RUclips.
@@ChrisHendrix117 cool do you have some links?
have some have use strat pick up on a REAL gibson and not just same construction?and the opposite gibson pick up on a REAL strat?
Mustang looks good
You promised the internet? Don't worry. The internet will forgive you.
DeArmond single coil vs. Filtertron Humbucker
