I'd like to see you compare the differences in Fender and G&L pickups. It'd be cool to see what Leo fender's ideas developed into, what problems they solved, and what cons came with the changes. There's some interesting stuff like the Z coils in G&L which I'd love to understand more about. It might be interesting to see how the wiring changed too.

Very interesting video. I own an original 1964 Fender Jaguar myself and I was always under the impression that the claw was added for additional shielding and I have seen this quoted as a so called fact many times. Your overview of the pickups seemed to make sense of the whole thing. Thank you for this.

I like it. Learned something I didn’t know about the Jag. I’ve loved mine and it absolutely works in the lane it was designed for.
I’ve always thought the pup design of the Jag was another throw back to Lap Steel’s and perhaps the claw is related in some way to steel’s, but in any case really interesting how they share so many parallels!
Thanks! Cheers! (Finishing my MacAllen single malt)

I have a couple of old (63, 65) Jags and am aware of the theory behind the claws but never saw one with the guts out or never thought too much about it. Have you ever considered doing a video including Burns Tri-Sonic and/or Burns Rez-O-Matic pickups? Definitely out of the norm but IMHO, very interesting and outstanding in their own way. That Bourbon looked yummy! :-)

I'd like to see that Jazzmaster vs. P90, though it's something I've already looked into. One thing that would be interesting is the evolution of the pickups in Jazzmaster -> Jaguar -> Bass VI.
I agree with you that the A/B videos are kind of tiring. I'm more interested in the theoretical side, because it's more educational to know why something is different than to know how they are different. And yes, I think it's more useful to do the experimentation in person than watch a video of someone else doing it.
Keep up the good work, these videos are fun and educational.

As for sound samples, yeah, it'd be a pain in the balls to do yourself, but if you have recommendations for "Wanna hear the difference between these pickups, go listen to this song by this guy and that song by that guy." But even that takes time to research, if you don't have specific examples off the top of your head.

I bought a jag recently with the intent of putting p90s in it, but I’ve been surprised by the Jaguar pickups. Much more tele character than I expected, and they can handle distortion MUCH better than a strat pickup.

I know that the Stringmaster 8-string pickups are taller... not sure if the Deluxe 6 pickups are taller too... but, of course, they're RWRP, like the Stringmasters. I think pick-up comparisons are cool, like you say tho just play the guitars.

Ok but why does the jag have less mids, bass or "balls" compared to the strat?? Teles have more bottom end than strats but Jags have even less bottom end? Anderson blindfold test shows this also. Thanks so much for this

The scale of the instrument acts on the tone A LOT, my vintage Jazzmaster is as "badass" as a Strat or a Tele.

@@Madeguydo bruh this isn't even about jazzmasters, I have one too and it's pretty obvious even unplugged that it's closer to a strat and tele. Saw your earlier comment too, nothing to do with the cultural aspect just purely sound. This is about jaguars. I agree with you that scale length plays a large role, and the lack of lows may be attributed to putting lighter twangier strings on a shorter scale guitar. I can also see 1meg pots as a major reason, letting more treble through that human ears tend to focus on. But my question was more about the extent jag pickups might play in giving Jaguars that janglier more bitey character compared to strat pups, or even compared to the other attributes of a jag in creating the whole sound (my buddy has a traditional one and there's definitely a difference, even with 13s and the strangle switch off). I was simply hoping Dylan might have some insights into what makes a Jag sound distinct, given the importance of pup construction, scale length, bridge structure, electronics, etc.

cool i am on a youtube video! appreciate your answer, totaly understand! but i was more interested by how saddle or pick up are affect the guitar sound more than tone of only the pick up
i am more on the "reasearch part of" searching why a guitar sound in a specifique way!!
i know that the best way to choose a guitar is to test it , but that s was not my point.
i would like to know what the origin of the tone, what affect more the final sound, saddle wood pick up? totallly understand that you can t do it! buti allways want to ear a gibson with strat pick up or and gibson humbucker on a strat to see how much pick up change the tone!
but i know too that if i want a jag sound or a gibson sound the fastest way is to buy an original one! but my point was just to ear howevery part affect a guitar sound just on a sound "reasearch" view!i am interested by "how it work"

I have seen various makers try these exact “mashups” using LP construction with Strat pups and so on. Have a look at boutique makers like Fano and others. They’ve dug deep on these ideas. Several sound examples on the ol’ RUclips.
