Awesome historical clip. Bill Bryson's Audiobook 'One Summer 1927' does a masterful retelling of the Lindbergh saga, especially detailing all the failed contenders.

Chamberlain did a fantastic job of landing with no left main gear. He held it off as long as possible to slow it down. He kept the right wing down and landed on the right main. You can't really see, but he was probably kicking some left rudder at that point to try to keep it tracking straight. First rate.

Cool! Early flight tests at Dutch flats with more and more weight added--although not enough to equal the 450 gallons he took off with in NY.

Imagine hallucinations and sleep deprivation and urinating on yourself and even flying blind sometimes...thru fog and such. Evidently he was created to do what he did. He seemed more connected to a a flying machine than people, anyway. His mother did that weird piece to him as a child by being so cold and detached. Bless his heart.

Yep, Lindy was really loaded down..prob overgrossed, but, the skilled pilot he was, he got off & under way successfully!! We lived right near the old Roosevelt Field where Lindy took off from. 1949-1967.. Lots of history in that area, of Roosevelt Field and Mitchel Field!! My bro & I are always in awe watching the newsreel takeoff footsge of this iconic, historical event!!

I think it was a very good and compelling and fairly accurate version Hollywood did when they made "The Spirit of St Louis". Granted Jimmy Stewart was about 20 years too old, and he knew it, but he begged to play the part. It is one of my all time aviation movies, it always makes me cry a little....

I was very lucky to get a summer job at the McDonnell Aircraft plant in St Louis in 1973 when I was 19 years old. Little did I know but the operating replica of The Spirit of St Louis used in the movie was kept in one of the hangars at McDonnell Aircraft at the time. It was a bit of a shock when I would have to go out there for some reason and see The Spirit of St Louis tucked away surrounded by F-15's and F-4's.

    Sensationelle Leistung!
Die Geschichte der Familie Lindberg ist jedoch äußerst tragisch und kein Mensch sollte jemals die Erfahrungen machen müssen!
