What a good remake of the old Samurai movie with Toshiro Mifune. Musashi already knew he could beat Kojiro before the duel. He used tactics and skill to defeat him. In the end Musashi cried probably because an excellent swordman died. But he had to fight him because it was officially mandated. I am so grateful to know a good part of the story of Shimmen Takezo/Miyamoto Musashi. During my training under my Sifu: he made me read the novel by Eiji Yoshikawa. What I also admired in the book was the Love story between Otsu and Musashi. What a great devotion of Love from a Woman!
Musashi really got under Kojiro's skin before the fight. First he arrived really late next he didn't even bring a sword. Those were big no-nos for a proud Samurai.
The whole series of 49 chapters is available on RUclips. I put them on a playlist and watched the whole thing over the course of a weekend. Great series
From what I'm to understand, Sasaki Kojiro's sword, a nodachi named The Drying Pole, or 物干し竿, was significantly longer than katanas typically wielded at that time. Musashi is described to wield and makes mention in The Book of Five Rings wielding tachis single handed--a sword a bit longer than a katana. There are claims that Musashi was 6' tall and because of his stature, used his reach and the length of his tachi plus a second sword to defeat his smaller opponents. From what I'm to understand, The Drying Pole of Sasaki Kojiro, and his famous technique, the Turning Swallow Cut or Tsubame Gaeshi (燕返し), struck from a great distance and was difficult to counter or defend with a typical katana or even a slightly longer tachi. So, from what I'm to understand, Musashi used the oar because it was longer than The Drying Pole, and it's because of this, when both men struck simultaneously, Kojiro's slash cut Musashi's headband, but Musashi's strike landed.
He beat him before it started. He purposely showed up late to the duel and unkempt to enrage and throw off his focus. He disgraced him by fighting him with a oar, this was a great disrespect. He used the sun to blind him and give musashi the upper hand. There is another story of a duel (can’t remember the samurai) but they dueled in a graveyard. One samurai got there early and dug the grave of his opponent. So when the other samurai showed up he was mentally defeated by seeing his grave already dug for him. Chess not checkers!!!!
@@maskedfishing7168 Yeah, the rumor to the legend states he showed up late to match the tide so he could readily escape Ganryu's seconds--men who certainly wouldn't hesitate killing Musashi--if he were to survive. In Musashi's many duels he would show up before or after the proposed time of the agreed duel, sometimes showing up exactly on time. All psychological warfare to gain whatever edge possible--especially considering these men are all intending to butcher one another, ANY edge you can gain could be the difference between life and death. The late hour matching the sunset is told of in some accounts of this duel, and that matches some of the strategies from the Book of Five Rings. Musashi writes, "If you do not know the spirit of your opponent, move his shadow." In other words, if motherfucker is a killer and likely to beat you, get the sun in his eyes. In Toshiro Mifune's performance in the Samurai Trilogy based from Eiji Yoshikawa's novelization of Musashi's life, Musashi does exactly this. He gets the sun to his back, effectively moving Kojiro's shadow and blinding him, only for Kojiro to reflect the sunlight back into Musashi's eyes with his sword. As for the oar, I maintain that it was the reach of this weapon that bore the initial intent for its use. There is rumor of Musashi dueling a man who founded the Jo Jutsu system, now Jo-do. This practitioner is the only man to defeat Musashi in a duel and it's because he used a longer weapon. The experience enlightened Musashi and gave him the necessary strategy to defeat Ganryu, Sasaki Kojiro, a duelist Musashi understood was perhaps a better swordsman. As you state, Chess rather than checkers, and indeed, here is the heart of it all. Though Kojiro is a better swordsman, he's not a better strategist and tactician. So, showing up late, hungover and disheveled swinging an oar was probably extremely insulting and aggravating to the traditions the higher ranked Sasaki Kojiro expected to be treated with. Like the Spartans of Greece, each warrior of Japan was expected to always keep themselves impeccably groomed because they expected death each day. It was considered rude to die and be gross and dirty for those left to tend to your remains. (See Daidoji Yuzan's Budoshoshinshu) So yes, showing up in this way was certainly disarming and an excellent strategy for surviving a fight that could have easily led to both men's deaths. I certainly appreciate your points. But I think Musashi knew full well his mortality was at stake. He was human after all, and no matter how much we can look back and immortalize the guy in legend, he was faced with an opponent that was by all means just as good at murdering people and had done so for several more years than Musashi since at the time of his death, Kojiro was 10 or so years older. Truly, the island could have been named Miyamoto Musashi, rather than Ganryu island, depending who died that day. Dick swagger can be a psychological edge, and both men probably crushed down all of their self-doubt and fear, but they both new they were about to die so I can't totally agree that Musashi beat Kojiro before it started.

It's virtually impossible that Kojiro could have spoken after the hit. That's fairytale to enhance the story. He died at once without agony. His skull must have been practically vaporized with such hit, a million pieces of bone.
People on the beach who wanted to see the fight watching them start to run away: "Do we follow them? They're going kind of fast, are they coming back? I forgot my bike at home."
Correct me if I got the story wrong, Musashi didn't want to kill Kojiro because he saw his younger self in Kojiro, after this fight Musashi became more pacifist knowing that he could have been killed the same way Kojiro did when he was younger and stopped being a killer.
Upon arriving, Musashi immediately noticed how the bodyguard's sandals were arranged. They had come prepared to fight on the beach with cords wrapped around the sandals to create cleats. The plan was to wait until one of the great swordsmen had died and then rush the survivor. Musashi managed to evade this tactic too.
How best to prepare for a sword duel? First, run a quarter of a mile on a sandy beach, that's good for your stamina. Second, hold your sword high up in the air using both hands until they go numb, that always helps...
Musashi used psychological warfare with him and wait for like four hours until Kojiro snapped. Cool ways to put destroy enemy nerves. But I know Kojiro didn't said it's magnificent, because he already died with his injury until musashi run to the boat when the samurai's tried to chase and kill him lol
@Mayur Baliga Yoshikawa's book is more accurate then the movie. The lenght of wooden paddle was of no importance in this case; Musashi showed to Kojiro that the soul+mind hardened weapon is better - in final - than pure talent and steeled katana...
kojiro fought with a longer than normal sword that's why musashi used the oar from the boat. being late was a tactic used to piss off kojiro and get him out of the right state of mind .
62202ify Well this guy got clapped from a hit from a stick. As well remembered that the front part of the skull is one of the top hardest part of the bone structure.

Forgive me for being ignorant. I have watched only a few of these videos. Are these productions inspirations for Rouroni Kenshin the Anime? I see some similarities between the two.
This is the most famous duel between most famous swordmen in japanese history. Inspirations for many japan sword movies. They made a statue for that. Watch ruclips.net/video/gdfHfvlqEus/видео.html
Formidable. I read about this fight with Kojiro in Musashi's "biography" written by Eiji Yoshikawa. Too bad the world lost a swordsman like Kojiro, who was superior to Musashi, but inferior in strategy (I read your five rings book), both could have created their own school.
if kojiro was the best swordman he wouldnt lose against musashi , kojiro was a brilliant swordman but musashi more he used his mind to defeat him , the proof he came with a buken instead of a real katana
@@wipolswalid7397 he also came way too late, tiring out his opponent before the fight even started, and attacked from where the sun light was, making it harder to see his movements
Musashi hacked that club out of a spare ore, during his boat trip to the beach. He also made a paper rope to hold his sleeves out of the way. He also jumped from the boat and dashed across the sand and immediately chopped Kojiro on the head, through down the club, then jerked both his swords out with a flourish while yelling loudly. He then ran back to the boat. All this happened in less than a minute
@@adamantiuscloudcat1799 Musashi used a wooden training sword, a bokken, for many of his duels and seldom a Jo. He was so good he didn't care if the duel was to the death or not and would choose to use a bokken regardless. In this particular fight he carved it out of the oar from the boat he used to get to the island and his opponent was actually wielding a nodachi, not a katana. Thus, any length advantage lay with his opponent.
that is one factor he won. but the most famous was he blinded kojiro using the sun. musashi's tactics was to come late in his duels usually at sunset to anger his opponents and cause rage. then leaping with the sun behind him making the opponent go blind so they wont see or counter the strike.
Probably Musashi...especially if it’s a scheduled duel. Musashi would use any means necessary to win. So him knowing Zatoichi is blind Musashi would arrange the duel where Zatoichi’s senses would be distracted but it won’t be obvious from the onset. Also. It seems Musashi was actually left handed. While he trained as a traditional right hand on top of left hand style he was very capable of holding the long sword in his left hand and drawing out his short sword with his right hand. Most dramas depict Musashi as totally right handed and when drawing two swords the long sword is in his right hand. Zatoichi will be confused with Musashi’s unorthodox dual sword style.
@@f430ferrari5 I’ve never watched any Musashi series or movies, but watched Zatoichi almost all episodes even two three times each, lol , so Zato is my favorite 😂
@@halildjencic1612 well Musashi is based off a real person. The evidence is his cave and his writings. Perhaps what makes Musashi the most famous is what he left behind in writings and paintings. Zatoichi is a fictional character. I don’t want to put down any blind person but if you’re not in a quiet room then it’s hard to use your other senses to help defend yourself. I’ve watched Musashi more than Zatoichi and I also like Yagyu Jubei. So we have all 3. Two eyes, one eye, and no eyes. 😂🤣 Some of the scenes of Zatoichi are great and there is comedy also in there.
Sadly the Japanese companies that own the rights to the movies and dramas force them to be taken down. Those Japanese companies invested heavily in the DVD era and want you to buy them instead. Korean companies have not a much better job in marketing their product. They offered free at the beginning. They used RUclips very well. Now all the old popular ones can no longer be found and you have to often pay via streaming service now.
Classic one strike, one kill. Magnificent is right. Not mumbo jumbo Hollywood or Chinese acrobatic clanking of swords. Even a Small cut from a katana would paralyze the area it struck.
Qing Han Musashi was standing in the water with his back to the ocean. In a fight, Musashi couldn’t back out and could only move right or left. Also the water would slow him down. So he need to get out of the water and ran to find a location that would give room to menuver.
A friend of mine who was full-contact kickboxer could jump up two metres, exactly like Musashi in this movie. But if I remember well, this sword fight was not done this way. The arrogant prince was armoured and had taken off his helmet while waiting for Musashi who was late. A japanese samurai helmet was a big contraption and he held it in his hand, thereby incapacitating himself. He expected Musashi to wait until he would be ready. Like gentlemen in Europe did their duels. Musashi only had the peddle of his boat in his hands and without any ado he immediately hit the prince with the peddle on his head, killing him. The lesson is to strike when the circumstances are propitious. The fight as pictured here in the movie, would not have been won by Musashi in reality. It is dramatised for the picture. The real fight lasted perhaps three seconds. That does not make a movie.
imagine growing up a japanese child hearing this story.... then when ur a teen and you see this movie and this scene... How disappointed are you gonna be seeing this shit. like really, thats how they portray the killing strike...

Forgive me for being ignorant. I have watched only a few of these videos. Are these productions inspirations for Rouroni Kenshin the Anime? I see some similarities between the two.
Empty Jar well they’re both based on the same Musashi stories
No. They are based on Musashi the real historic character, although this particular serie comes from the book of Eiji yoshikawa.
Kojiro was the better swordsman but Musashi was the better fighter
if kojiro was the best swordman he wouldnt lose against musashi , kojiro was a brilliant swordman but musashi more he used his mind to defeat him , the proof he came with a buken instead of a real katana
@@wipolswalid7397 he also came way too late, tiring out his opponent before the fight even started, and attacked from where the sun light was, making it harder to see his movements
And this is why I have brain damage? Next time I'll bring a stick to a sword fight.
lol
musashi's wooden sword is longer than kojiros..... thats the reason he won
Yep. He studied Kojiros technique.
Besides the Jo has more versatility, reach and movements than the katana. Musashi used it most of the time.
@@rougarou1559 Correct

武蔵と対戦した時、すでに小次郎は70歳を過ぎていたらしいね(•ө•)

only a true warrior cries after he kills his foe
kalai131 I think he's crying of the pain of his entire palm getting slashed by the katana
with happiness because he is alive
Yes, kalai.
But the pussies never get it.
Who’s better Musashi or Zatoichi?
Some of the scenes of Zatoichi are great and there is comedy also in there.
Musashi? 👁️👄👁️
Its a BattleShip?
IJN Musashi?
Why does we can find russians , americans , europeans complete movies on RUclips but its almost impossible to find good japanese samurai's movies ?
Sadly the Japanese companies that own the rights to the movies and dramas force them to be taken down.
Those Japanese companies invested heavily in the DVD era and want you to buy them instead.
Korean companies have not a much better job in marketing their product. They offered free at the beginning. They used RUclips very well. Now all the old popular ones can no longer be found and you have to often pay via streaming service now.
Superb Japanese Drama..
it's time to skin those historic martial art maters, whoever they were, wherever they were from
Was that a Sniper sitting on one of the coconut trees. After all that boat entry, standoff, staring ,running and buildup Sniper takes it all.
Musashi Polat Alemdar değil mi?
Шедевр киноиндустрии!
Classic one strike, one kill. Magnificent is right. Not mumbo jumbo Hollywood or Chinese acrobatic clanking of swords. Even a Small cut from a katana would paralyze the area it struck.
Arya Stark does not approve.
Sława Zwycięstwu! Hail from Poland
Why is this guy always coming ashore on a boat to fight?
After that fatal blow not even an angel would speak!
what I dont understand is why they start running?
Qing Han Musashi was standing in the water with his back to the ocean. In a fight, Musashi couldn’t back out and could only move right or left. Also the water would slow him down. So he need to get out of the water and ran to find a location that would give room to menuver.
Qing Han forgot. Musashi also wanted the sun behind him blinding his opponent.
Also, to get the High Ground.
Also to make a reference to the great Rocky Balboa and Apollo Creed sprints!
No mmater how sharp the swoerd it.s.
Musashi deliberately showed up late to piss kojiro off
Musashi was the Samurai equivalent of Mourhno and Kojiro was that of Guardiola.
Ummmm just no dude
They just talk,run and jump...then 1 died....
imagine growing up a japanese child hearing this story.... then when ur a teen and you see this movie and this scene... How disappointed are you gonna be seeing this shit. like really, thats how they portray the killing strike...
İs he Polad Alemdar from Kurtlar vadisi?
He didn't use two swords?
they both run to the left because it was windy there.
