I don’t know if everyone watched the whole video but their master plan is to have more properties to lease. Meaning you and your family still won’t own anything.

    • @moosepasshippie

Unfortunately, that is the only way it will work. If you own it then you can sell it to the highest bidder.

That’s an important point! The best part of buying real estate is to build wealth. My parents originally bought a condo unit for 200K. Years later they paid off the mortgage and used the gains to help us upgrade to a better property to support multi family living. You wouldn’t be able to build that kind of wealth with a leasehold, thus insuring you’ll be stuck in your current situation for life!

The state should have always always thought of their own people and finding homes and ways to house them besides Hawaiian homestead land which by the way the homes are being built so cheap they fall apart after the second year with the way the internal Construction is built. Yet instead property is sold to Outsiders from different states or countries acres of land wasted on Outsiders Investments! For Outsiders personal gain.

I am not a local..but toally agree. Locals need to be first no questions end of story. my mother had lived in Oahu back in the 60s and always told me that locals and natives got priority on housing so I grew up thinking I couldn't, which made the Ilands even more special IMO (this might be misinfermation on her part or maybe thats how it was back then). Now as an adult I see its a freaking free for all based soley on MONEY (that no normal person has). no no no! Instead of paying more and buying local ., even the dairy farm closed . Milk shipped here cheaper than what could be produced. Just think if we grew or vegetables and fruits and dairy products inflation would not be so out of control .Need to increase cattle and other livestock . Need to stop people moving here . Too many people have been left poor and desperate, that's why crime is up so much. Things weren't perfect last century but it felt so much more humane in the late 20th century than it does now. Tourism was supposed to just be an alternate income source for towns and cities, not a way of life that lead to gentrification of entire cultures. @@beretaniastreet6384 I really don't know as I was still at the UH. My parents were working class. My father never graduated from high school as he had to work at a young age to help support his family. I can't remember the exact year they sold the house to move to Hilo but it must have been in the late 1970's sometime.
I don't know if Hawaii property taxes are like other states because I moved to California after the service but the actual property tax is not the problem. It's all the pile on stuff they add depending on your local city council. Where I live, it's an unincorporated area of Los Angeles so we are not an actual "city" so the taxes are fairly stable. My GF lives in another city where her property taxes are crazy due to add on stuff every year.
Interestingly enough, many decades ago, a politician in California did a study and found out that California could actually get rid of property taxes and still survive. You know he wasn't popular.
