The first time I ever played one of these was at Guitar Center Hollywood in 2008 and I fell in love with it immediately. I've had a Guild D50 and Martin D-28 in the past but there's just something about these guitars...eventually, I bought a 10+ year old used one. I play it almost every day. The D-15 is, without question, the best guitar in the world in it's price range.
I've just bought a second hand one (D15M) and I'm in love with the thing. It's the warmest sounding guitar I've ever played but it also has great resonance and note retention. It's absolutely perfect and super cumfy in the hands too. A lovely wee beastie.

This guitar is incredible! I have a taylor 210e, a martin dxm and a martin d15m. There is no compitition the taylor 210e sounds about twice as good as the dxm and the d15m sounds at least 3 times as good as the taylor which I hardly play anymore.
Hey Shawn, I too have a D15m. To me the rich, full sound of the D15 is hard to beat. My buddy has a D28 but when he comes over all he wants to do is play my D15!
Well............... pardon me while I was mesmerized by the sound. For years my brother has been telling me I HAVE to get a Martin to play country/Bluegrass. This has come closest to convincing me. A LGS has one used for $ 500 w/out a case. A bit worn but sounds great..
Thanks so much for all of your Martin videos. I have watched dozens of them and they have been of invaluable help in letting me experience how the guitars really sound! This guitar is one of Martin's best, in my opinion.
I have this guitar and put in LR Baggs M1A soundhole pickup and the sound is phenomenal. Plus, the cream colored pickup in this hog looks vintage and awesome. I recommend it.
Replying to an old thread. The D15m is the introvert of the Martin dreadnoughts. Not that loud but with a sweet almost hifi tone. The D18 is the outgoing older sister. Bright and loud, nice woodiness. The D28 takes on the D18 base and is a touch sweeter with tons of overtones.
I have a 98 that has a three piece back. Martin factory for some reason. Sent to martin for neck reset, and they confirmed what others said that worked on my guitar. The pieces are straight line with middel piece smallest. Not the 35 traditional. Martin wanted my guitar at the time. They were as confused as I was and could not explain. I love the D-15 series.
Does it really need binding when its all mahogany and not different woods pieced together? I personally like the stripped down look, but opinions are opinions.
Played one recently at a local shop…. Sounded great… neck felt terrible. Wondering if this is just an adjustment issue? Action was high and felt stiff….any thoughts ?
Question: I bought a used 1997(maybe ‘96) D-15M. I believe it has Sitka somewhere. The top looks natural and nothing has the weird zebra pattern. I’m trying to price it out of curiosity, and there is frustratingly little online that doesn’t lead to a 19 year old dead forum it’s an ad for Martin
Been playing since I was 13! I am 29 now! Dropped guitar for a few years due to responsibility's. Now I purchased this guitar on Sunday. Could help but grab it up. Sounds so sweet with the solid mahogany top. When they stop making these it will be hard to find a solid mahogany top that has this sound. Has a true unique tone to it. I love it. It is not all twangy like a Taylor. Has the most beautiful mids and lows. In my opinion that's where it is at.
I'm an 82 y o guitar player and on retirement. Luv this Mohog D15. But don't luv it but not as much as a D15M costs. I'm repl the bridge pins, saddle and nut on my DRS1. Ebony bridge pins, saddle and nut with deer antler bone. Then I'll see if I like the D15M more'n my DRS1. Martin rep said Martin uses Tusk components acct Tusq works better with pickup. I play Bg. Whatta I care if I never use a pickup?
Thankyou so much for making this video. I saw the video for the 00015m and have wondered about the dreadnaught in the 15 series. This was really helpful :)
Very impressed with the range the guitar projects. Those high and bright came right out when asked to. Yet the deep resilience was steady as your hands.... something I envy a bunch. I would like to hear that guitar with a pick-up in sound hole. I have a Hohner that really would like to have that neck... ha ha
Wow, I didn’t know what to expect from an all mahogany guitar. I expected it to be more woody and dark, but this sounded surprisingly sweet and nice mid/highs. I guess I’m brainwashed to think that all tops need to be spruce to sound sweet. I’ll definitely try and find one to play at guitar center just to confirm what I just heard. All my guitars are rosewood and spruce but I need to give this one some consideration.
A very nice sounding guitar. I was able to play a dss15m at my local music store. This guitar has a great sound and Tony played it very well. I own a martin d18 and I'd love to have the 15m or dss15m to complement it.
Just bought one today at my local Martin dealer. Very nice guitar, feels very solid and sounds awesome!! very loud and resonant. I would recommend to anyone looking for a good touring guitar, reliable and relatively cheap for a US made instrument ...
Some web sites say the DC-15ME is exactly the same as the D-15M but with a cutaway and built in pickup. But others say the new 15M has upgrades over the DC-15ME. If so what are those upgrades? Why did Martin stop making a C+E version of this guitar? Is it because people people prefer putting their own choice of pickup in over the shadow pickup that came with the DC-15ME? I like a cutaway but its not a must, and I'd like the option to plugin but one can always get a pickup installed, I wonder if there's any reason to pick the 15M over the the DC-15ME (which can still be found). Comments are greatly appreciated.
A friend of mine has one made around 2001. Anyone here have any idea of it’s value? He bought it to learn on and never did. It’s in great shape and has the case with green interior. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!
A have a Martin D-15, the strings are very tight. It's also time to change them. Someone can tell me which Martin String could fit better on the guitar? There are so many... I thought about the LIGHT ONES, 12-53. If you could help, thanks. I bought it for 650$ CAD about 10 years ago. The guy wanted to buy a Takamine. A real bargain.
Tony, I have a D-28 and I love the fuller sound it has when playing, especially since I'm more of a fingerpicker rather than using a pick. How would you say the D-15M compares to the D-28, sound-wise, and considering this preference of mine? Thanks in advance.
Hi, Levi. I once asked this same question posed by SicknesssDwellls and received the same response. Now, don't get me wrong. I look forward to the Acoustic Letter and enjoy Tony's commentary, but you might reconsider and have him add variety to his playing. For instance, Andy of PGS has a repertoire unsurpassed when compared to other online music shops. It is obvious that he prepares for each video and is their greatest marketing tool. Please allow Tony more freedom and let's hear those guitars!
I have one of these and I must say my neck appears considerably darker than this one. Did they start using different wood in the last couple years ? No mine is not one of the depression era models. Its the D15M.. Really disliked the strings that were on it ( I bought it used ) so I used the Martin bluegrass, medium bottoms, light tops. Completely changed the tone of the guitar and unless the other strings were completely worn out, the change was quite dramatic. That said, I also played a few Martins at the LGS there were strung with strings that just sounded dead. To each his own I guess..
@@bptdns22 Sorry, didn't see your reply.. Yes, absolutely a D15N. I've since tried the light gauge Martin MA140's and M2100 as well as D'Addario E somethings for acoustic.. Hard to pick a favorite.. Probably the light gauge simply because it's easier on the fingers.
This guitar has 2 different fingerboards now. Could you tell me how they differ. I bought mine a little over a year ago. Same guitar at Guitar Center is now being sold with a different fingerboard.
East Indian Rosewood is now being using on the fingerboard of this guitar Your guitar could have a "Morado" fingerboard which is very similar to Indian Rosewood. Not much difference in these materials really..... just an alternative to Rosewood -Chad
Been offered one for €600 from a friend who owns a guitar shop (at half the price in the shop) Reluctant to give up on my old Washburn but this sounds sweet. The Washburn has a more bass driven note to it.
After a couple of days playing around with it would be stupid not too. Story behind it the previous owner screwed it a bit and my friend had to restore it. They'd stripped the lacquer off the neck for some reason. So he said I can have it for what he paid the person for it and the cost of repair. Good deal I think for this sweet sounding guitar.
I"m still trying to find the interview but Dick Boak of Martin said the D15M is the best Martin they ever made, not kidding if you have the link please send , thanks and Peace !
Im looking into the 00-15m, but they don't have it in stock at my local store. They have this one though, and i was thinking of trying this one and ordering the 00-15m if this model pleased me. I was wondering how would this compare, i expect a louder sound, but somewhat similar in this one, and im pretty sure im set for the 00-15m.
Prisms Edits I would no way buy a 00-15 based on the d15m. they are very very different, I would really recommend trying a different store or looking around till you can find one to play.
Have no idea what the fingerpicking stuff was, but the flatpicking stuff near end was bluegrass style. Look up bluegrass guitar lessons on RUclips. There’s a good guy called lessons with marcel. Good luck
The bluegrass flatpicking which begins at 2:34 is a fiddle tune called 'Big Sandy River'. I first heard it played by Bill Monroe and the Bluegrass Boys with Kenny Baker on fiddle. Here it is: ruclips.net/video/LHi97G7xprM/видео.html
D15M is nice and priced accordingly for M model. However not the rich sound of the 28 and 35. I know they are different creatures which must be diff between sitka spruce and bracing. Is there much difference in the volume's ?
+Bad “1952telecaster” Mann I tried the retro strings...... didn't do it for me. However, the 80/20 D'Addarios worked great as did the now defunct Martin 545's. Plus, no other Martin guitar will smell like this one out of the case.. and that's a good thing. Eat your heart out HD-28's :)
+Camden Boren SO true! Never over the span of 30+ yrs playing guitar have I ever had one single component of the overall guitar 'system' make such an immediate (dramatically) positive impact! Read a little blurb about JP's somewhere just before buying new strings, so I figured I'd try a couple sets- but still bought a stack of the ones I'd used forever. That stack's still gathering dust. I immediately put Pearse strings on all my acoustics, and was equally amazed by the results. It's the very embodiment of the old electric guitar adage "lifting a blanket off the amp"- without the amp. The response, clarity, note definition (especially big open chords that can be chaotic) was like a new guitar every time. Perfectly balanced tonality across the board.
@@coolikedat9983 Yep, I tried those as well... they sound pretty good for a short period of time and then go dead.. as in nothing. The deadest strings I think I ever tried. Too bad, they did sound good when I first tried them.. The Martins and D" Addarios simply sounded more mellow with age, not dead.
to blimithy blimey, i do believe you're right about the m standing for mahogany, but my question is that i have a martin d15 with no m after the 15 but it is still all mahogany, i'm not sure what i have. it is a 2001.
Hi Jeff, the newer D15M has a few upgrades from the older model in that it now comes with a bone nut and saddle as standard whereas i believe the older model had a corian nut and tusq saddle. The M also now comes with polished ebony bridge pins whereas the older ones had the plastic pins.
A year late, but if it's still of interest, the M signifies mainly the fact that the new 15's are made with a wood Martin refers to as genuine mahogany and the old 15's are made with an African mahogany called sapele.
Ah, you're right Charlie in that some older 15's were made with sapele but many of them were made with genuine mahogany also. I've had two earlier 15's both made from mahogany.
The video doesn’t do this amazing instrument justice. Go play one in a store. I regret spending 800$ on a DRS1 I should have spent the extra cash and bought this sex machine.
interesting point of view. I played the DRS-1 and the D-15. I enjoyed the chime of the DRS-1 better and so I went with that one. The only guitar that I felt surpassed these two was the D-28. That guitar is just....something truly special by Martin. I'll probably get one before year's end.
Thank you for the video! Is this guitar acoustic/electric? I have been seriously considering purchasing this particular guitar but I need to be able to plug it into an amp for love gigs. Thank you!
Sounded a bit muddy. Might be the mic or gain settings rather than the guitar itself. Or maybe it's because the pick guard still has the protective plastic on it? 😉
+Jonas Ahlstedt I have the D15, and it's also mahogany. After playing the D15m, I can say that although there wasn't much of a difference, it was a tiny bit brighter.
How would you recommend amplifying this guitar for live performances? sound hole pick up, mic it, etc? if it's a pick up which one? if mic, what kind? thanks.
You asked 5 years ago but ı can recommend now, cause saw you one minute ago. The Lr baggs m1 or 80, dimarzio black angel is can be good for this bassy old school badass. Never buy a piezo. Piezos kill basses and mids, then guitar transformates a banjo. Fuck all of them. Soundhole magnet pickups is always great bud.
I got to say that there is a reason why this is one of the cheapest solid wood Martins. After owning this for 10 years, and listening closely, you might observe that the highs are sort of tinny, the mid range is sort of absent, and the bass is a bit indistinct. I'm talking about for a Martin, mind you. I think Mahogany is really a specialist sort of guitar. It has great mellow leads - at one time I had the action set low and it compared with my electric guitars. It does mellow finger picking quite well, and it sounds better with a capo up the neck. I think for full chords it lacks clarity, and I think that is why spruce is a preferred wood for most guitar work.
For the serious musician, I would get an all solid wood spruce top guitar. Either Blueridge, Epiphone Masterbuilt, maybe a Fender. If you can get a Seagull in a spruce top, then fine, otherwise no. Get a regular Dreadnought. If you can't afford all this, get a Big Baby Taylor. If you can't afford that, then I would get the solid top Yamaha. And if you can't afford that, I would get the laminate Yamaha. If you want something cheap, I bought a Savannah SGP 12 NA last month that is amazing. It doesn't do mellow strumming well, or fast leads, but for finger picking and blues it works great.
Diana Ariana - you'll love Blueridge guitars. If you can spend a little more, then go with a br-140a, br-160, or br-160a. To get an acoustic guitar with better tone and playability than one of the BR models mentioned, you'll need to spend about 3-4 times more. The all-solid wood models from Yamaha are also very good choices (if you want electronics). Playability and built/consistency are usually where Taylor and Martin beat many brands in the sub $1500 category but to get the true unhindered good tones from Martin and Taylor, people have to pay $2500-3000 or more for a new guitar. I hope this helps.
It does help! Thank you. I was also advised to look at the Yamaha A-series AC1M Small Body. Out of the Blueridge 140 B and that one, which should I go for?? (keep in mind I am a beginner lol) Thank so much for your input!!
I have a D15m now I'm looking at the DC15ME because I want an acoustic electric, do they sound the same? should I just put a pick up in my D15m or pay the extra 500 for the DC15ME? what do you think Tony

Mike Piercey Well nevermind, i bought the d15m. it was and still is by far the best guitar i have played. Love it
+Prisms Edits Hope you got your 000-15m, it is the best playing guitar I have , and I have a Gibson j45, Martin HD28, and the 15 is sweeter.
+Becky 57 Happy you like it , I Love mine.
You made this d15 more beautiful the way you play it. What are the title of these songs you played, I’m kinda new learning guitar.
Here it is:

D15M is nice and priced accordingly for M model. However not the rich sound of the 28 and 35. I know they are different creatures which must be diff between sitka spruce and bracing. Is there much difference in the volume's ?
Me again... I ended up buying this guitar used. What strings will bring out a bit of the mids and high's. It has phenomenal bass without even trying.
+Nate Ngzcaz I use 11 gauge, tried 12s and 13s but didn't like em
Is mahogany that much different from sapele? Or would you say they have similar sound and tonal qualities?
Both woods have very similar tonal qualities....
Hey, I love the guitar ( Because I have one) and your playing. Is the first riff you play a song?? If so what is it called?
Last Steam Engine Train
Thank you
That is a very nice sounding guitar, thanks for the video
WHAT IS THE INTRO SONG. I NEED TO KNOW THIS. cause its good.
What is the intro song?
Tony. Will you do a review of the new D15m Burst? Please!
James Hafner We will try, the next time we get one in stock.
Sounds like this guitar would suit my kind of music - acoustic country rocking blues.
to blimithy blimey, i do believe you're right about the m standing for mahogany, but my question is that i have a martin d15 with no m after the 15 but it is still all mahogany, i'm not sure what i have. it is a 2001.
Can we see a Celebrity Death Match Tony vs Spoon Phillips
Would pay for it
The video doesn’t do this amazing instrument justice. Go play one in a store. I regret spending 800$ on a DRS1 I should have spent the extra cash and bought this sex machine.
Hey friend dont regret that you buy the drs 1 ,you wanted it in the First place so you like it .Just buy the d15 too cause every guitar is special!
interesting point of view. I played the DRS-1 and the D-15.
I enjoyed the chime of the DRS-1 better and so I went with that one.
The only guitar that I felt surpassed these two was the D-28.
That guitar is just....something truly special by Martin.
I'll probably get one before year's end.
@TownesVanZandt this is the d15m not the d15. Big difference
Ok, I desided to buy this one!
Thank you for the video! Is this guitar acoustic/electric? I have been seriously considering purchasing this particular guitar but I need to be able to plug it into an amp for love gigs. Thank you!
the guitar does not come equipped with a pickup but one can easily be installed in this and most other acoustic guitars.
Sounded a bit muddy. Might be the mic or gain settings rather than the guitar itself.
Or maybe it's because the pick guard still has the protective plastic on it? 😉
1:46 what is the name of this blues?
Whats the difference between the D15 and D15M?
Mahogany
+Jonas Ahlstedt I have the D15, and it's also mahogany. After playing the D15m, I can say that although there wasn't much of a difference, it was a tiny bit brighter.
What is that tune at 2.34 ?
The bluegrass flatpicking which begins at 2:34 is a fiddle tune called 'Big Sandy River'.

@@pedroguitarshow Sorry Pedro, I can't put a name to it. Perhaps you can somehow get in touch with Tony and ask him?
That first riff was so sick.
Do you know how to make bar chords
How would you recommend amplifying this guitar for live performances? sound hole pick up, mic it, etc? if it's a pick up which one? if mic, what kind? thanks.
You asked 5 years ago but ı can recommend now, cause saw you one minute ago. The Lr baggs m1 or 80, dimarzio black angel is can be good for this bassy old school badass. Never buy a piezo. Piezos kill basses and mids, then guitar transformates a banjo. Fuck all of them. Soundhole magnet pickups is always great bud.
I don't understand that on a cost and quality basis why you wouldn't buy a Larrivee every time.
Is there a difference between a Martin d15m and a Martin d-15m dreadnought anyone? Or is it the same guitar?
+James Jones Both are the same guitar.... the "D" means dreadnought.
Didn't think I was going to like this guitar so much. But I actually really do.
Could you compare this to the Sigma SDM-15/DM-15?
that's already on youtube.
Thanks a lot Tony for helping me find MY acoustic guitar! Cheers'n'beers from Germany
I think for full chords it lacks clarity, and I think that is why spruce is a preferred wood for most guitar work.
moreanimalspirits you sound like you know what your talking about what guitar do you reccomend (at the price range) for a serious beginner?
For the serious musician, I would get an all solid wood spruce top guitar. Either Blueridge, Epiphone Masterbuilt, maybe a Fender. If you can get a Seagull in a spruce top, then fine, otherwise no. Get a regular Dreadnought. If you can't afford all this, get a Big Baby Taylor. If you can't afford that, then I would get the solid top Yamaha. And if you can't afford that, I would get the laminate Yamaha.
If you want something cheap, I bought a Savannah SGP 12 NA last month that is amazing. It doesn't do mellow strumming well, or fast leads, but for finger picking and blues it works great.
moreanimalspirits i was just looking at a Blueeridge BR-140, stika spruce mahogany sides, was concidering to purchase monday. :) was that a good pick?
The d 15 m is so expensive now, it’s actually gone up in price more than 500. Sounds nice and full.
Where is this guitar built? I have heard it is an import.
Edward Hampton
Nazareth, PA
I have a D15m now I'm looking at the DC15ME because I want an acoustic electric, do they sound the same? should I just put a pick up in my D15m or pay the extra 500 for the DC15ME? what do you think Tony
Check out the k&k mini
