Nice to see a Lightroom tutorial. I think it would be beneficial to have tutorials on the whole processing cycle using both Lightroom and Photoshop together. As always, great video. Thanks Aaron and team.
Just starting with Lightroom for the first time. Opened it up and had NO idea where to start! Thanks so much for this! Now, gotta find a video about what to do after I’m finished editing my pics.
A good video. Laconic. Well Structured. Delivered with humor. Provided me with the information I needed about using Lightroom to import pictures and then store them in a structure that made access easy. Recommended
One side point. I followed this approach after working with Lightroom without using catalogues. Of course, as soon as I created a new Catalogue, it used this and - HORROR - 'lost' the old one. If this happens to you, open file explorer, go to pictures, find *.lrcat click on each file until you get your old settings back. What I then did was to copy this file and rename it according to the various themes it contained and then deleted collections within these until I had something that represented the themes I wanted. Make sense?
Then of course, this opens the "can of worms" as you realise that you have a skit tonne of pictures in your catalogue (Oh THAT is why Lightroom has been so slow recently!) and end up using smart catalogue to select (colour) and delete (from lightroom only, not from disk). And yes, did check, when it says Lightroom it only means the current catalogue. The other one remains the same size.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS! So well explained, nice and slow, and helped immensely as I found this whole lightroom folder/collection/catalog thing very confusing (until this tutorial)!
Great video! There is one function I do miss in the programme; auto-backup. Let's say you import photos and videos from your camera onto your computer and into the folder LR is set to check for files, it should automatically save those or updated/changed files to a local and/or online backup location.
Hi there. Thank you for this great tutorial. Regarding making collections for 'favourite/best photos' how can these files be copied into a separate folder on my computer? Thank you
Oh, Aaron. I got into a terrible mess with this easy tutorial as a beginner. I had to delete LR and reinstall and start again. Thanks for the tutorial as I have started again I can now get some order to find my images instead of going on a hunting expedition each time.
@phlearn I remember that you organized photos in lightroom with the date and filename as (2021-07-18 Greece) and then you created 4 folders inside this folder as Capture, select, master, output. Does the specific collection technique you suggest do the same?
Brilliant tutorial. Just when I needed it. Setting up a new Mac and was just thinking of how I could better organise my files. (Last 5 years worth are a nightmare 😄)
I am sooo thankful for this video! I have a better understanding on what i was doing wrong. My only questions is, am I better off clearing out my current Lightroom (on my brand new computer) and start from scratch? I already started syncing and its taking forever, and i know it's not properly organized.
Started with a new installation of Lightroom and wanted to organize it the right way. This helped out a lot! On a side note - is that the artwork from the board game Parks in the background? I love that game!
Thank you A-Aron! Love all your tutorials. They've helped me tremendously! I don't bother watching any other channels for this content anymore. Just search "Phlearn lightroom/photoshop _____" now and poof, I get phlearnt! Thanks!
Thanks for another great video Aaron, I use a single catalog with smart collections for year then month then camera and it works pretty good for searching for 'old' work I'm only at 10k images so far so all is fast and fine.
Good post. LR has a powerful relational database under the hood that makes it all possible. I wish there was a way to convert a collection to a collection set - any ideas? P for pick should have been P for PHLEARN, Ha. Tip - don’t check “eject after import” when importing from SD card - had PC lockups when option was selected. Also, be sure to do file naming, and management from inside LR, not PC OS file handler.
Thanks for this video! I'm running into an issue when I move the HD folder to an external HD to back it up and remove from the computer HD. Once I go back into LR, I can't access any of the collection photos bc the directory path has changed. Should I just be storing on the image files on the external from the start every time I import? Thanks!
The libaries is what really pisses me off about Lightroom. Can't open a file, cause I did it before, and then have to work around it. Make it like PS, where you just throw a file in and it opens it.
Newbie question. When do YOU decide to delete "unwanted" images after shooting? Like the image of your foot that was accidently taken or if you took 10 shots of the same thing and you uploaded all 10 to lightroom and then decided the best one to develop and edit. What, how and when do YOU decide to delete the extraneous, unneeded, unwanted yet uploaded images?
Awesome tutorial and precise and fun and smooth and simple, great work all around and l actually finally worked out how to do it, cheers have subscribed and be learning a lot more, thank you :)
Arron, I'm so bad at this organization. I often go click on photos in a collection and then go to develop and get the message that the file cannot be found. ? Is that because I moved them from the original storage space be it hard drive, ssd drive or whatever?
My two photo sources are 1. Canon EOS 7D. 2. iPhone pictures in iCloud. My goal is to import into LR from iCloud as easily and as often as from a camera card. Is there a LR version with a process for this?
Hi Aaron... I have been a PS user for years, but after the last update I am looking to migrate over to LR for most of my organizing and pre-edit. A big issue I am find is that I have developed a lot of "Key words" in Bridge that I would like to move over to LR but I do not see a way to do that. As an example, I have the category "Birds" with subcategory keywords for each type of bird. Is there a way to migrate these keywords over to LR from Bridge? Thanks Bob
wow thank you... honestly i've been just going through my photos one "previous import" at a time and it was getting to be too unorganized when you do multiple shoots lol
I have Lightroom 6 version 9. It does not recognize the Canon .cr2 file taken with my Canon 80D. I’ve tried to copy them into LR as a DNG file bit it also will not work. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks for your contributions!
Hi, I know the question is not strictly related but I hope you guys can help me since I am still confused about LR photo storage. My old iMac is ready for recycling (10 y/old) and I am going to buy a new one. My budget is relatively limited so, here I am asking you: would it be a right choice to get one with SSD only (as much as my budget would allow me to get…) and storing ALL my pics on 2 external HDD (one for backup) or this will slow down Lightroom? In this case should I look for a specific HDD type or any would be fine? Would you otherwise recommend me to store the most recent images (like the one’s of the current year for example) is the SSD and the rest on the external HDD? I know for some of you these can be foolish questions but I would appreciate an answer 🙂 Thanks!
Thank you. Ive been watching a few videos on this topic and this seemed very clear to me but I take notes. There are many details and you make it look like it is brushing your teeth!! I have SO many folders on my external hard drive and you cleared up the difference between move, add, etc. Right now I do like to weed out my obviously bad photos for I import them into Bridge first since this is what I have been accustomed to do. I have been working on editing in LR but my organization is starting to get out of control and confusing. Do you have another video on cleaning up Lightroom and any pointers on deleting files etc? I will look.
Deleting is a process. You go into Library click on the photo/photos you wish to delete then hit the delete button on your keyboard. I don't believe there is a delete button within Lightroom although I may be mistaken. I've found this to be pretty easy. Good luck with the process. It's always a good feeling to purge all of the bad images.
Question - during my import it seems to take the date of last modify rather than the creation date. Is there a place to insure the date is of creation?
I have a question. I am getting ready to buy a new external hard drive to store all of my images on. Once bought, I will be transferring all of my images from their current drive over to that drive. Once I change their location to the new drive, will that affect Lightroom’s catalogs as far as when I reopen the image in LR, will LR put the previous edit on the image or will I have to re edit the image?
Quick question. When you go to importing your photos, do you import everything from your card and then organize them, or do you just import the photos you want to do something with? right now I'm just importing the photos that I want to edit but I have no organizing sequence. I want to figure out a better way of organizing - obviously why I am watching this video - but I just don't know what the common thing to do is. Only import photos that I plan on editing, or import them all and deal with what I want to edit from there.
a question on organizing: so if you have a few cities, countries, would it be ok to have multiple folders in collections with "people", "architecture" etc? or let's say you have a few folders from 10 trips to Greece :), what is an efficient way to organize it with Lightroom? to be able to find something fast in the library. are you giving also tags and categories to each picture? Re storing pictures in the folder "pictures". once on a PC laptop I lost all folder content from "pictures", which was a shock (still not sure how it happened), fortunately I did not store a lot of my own images there, mainly various pictures from the web, so it was bearable, yet still some research & inspirational material for different work was lost. so I personally would recommend rather creating a different folder.
This might have been the best tutorial EVER on ANYTHING. No bs, no unnecessary stuff - brief and precise - exactly how I like it. Good job sir
Simplicity is the key. You kept it simple and consise. Thank you for you efforts.
Another enjoyable video from PHLEARN, thank you Nace.
Aaron, you are such a good instructor!!!!! THANK YOU!!!!!!
Works right up to when you need to search for images in different catalogs. I'm a single catalog guy. 100's of thousands of images, no problem.
Bob Koss that will slow down LR alot
M K only if you have wooden PC
@@MK-hz2bn Once upon a time, when god's dog was a puppy, was true. It isn't true in current versions.
@@MK-hz2bn That used to be an issue many years ago. No longer.
@@Gmon750 What is the fix? I use an external harddrive and it tense to be real slow If I put it all in one catalog.
Excelent tutorial! that's what i was searching! thanks
I should have looked at this 3 months ago! Awesome tutorial!
That was just fantastic, thanks a lot. Well articulated and clear.
Nice to see a Lightroom tutorial. I think it would be beneficial to have tutorials on the whole processing cycle using both Lightroom and Photoshop together. As always, great video. Thanks Aaron and team.

the man, the myth, the legend himself...aaron nace!!! if our brains were computer hard drives id download your lightroom and photoshop folders
I love this tutorial. It's clearly explained and very easy to follow. Great job, Aaron!
Point and shoot tutorial, thanks Aaron.

Amazing video. Very clearly explained. Thanks!
Great simple tutorial. My catalog is a mess and this video will really help get it under control.
I know the feeling, My "catalog" is a disaster!
Super Thank you !! my English its not the best but its so easy the way you explain everything

A very nice tutorial to organise my photo's!!! Thank you a lot
I going to subscribe, you had me at PHLEARN! new to Lightroom, how will I organize all my photos. I think I've got IT, thank you.
So clear, best explanations found over ...a lot of them here ! Thank you Aaron :))
Easiest to follow, informative and simple but very effective. Thank you :)

Thank you so much. It is great to watch this video just before I m beginning with my new LR Classic Cc installation
Thank you for explaining things so clearly, Great tutorial!
this is great! if i import images from two years ago, how do i organize them by date? and, if i have images from greece from three different trips?

Just incredibly helpful! Thank you!
More Lightroom tutorials please 😀
Thx But I did not do this at first can I go back and redo this with the pic I stored on pc. The section you did on finding them was a bit fast for me.
GREAT video!!! You have helped with an ongoing problem.

I have my photos saved on my LaCie SSD drive. When I choose a destination folder, do I simply choose the same folder I imported then from?

Hey guys, this might be a silly question but where are the edited photos stored? I'm just deciding if I want to purchase this software
So collections are part of folders? Or are they the same?
As always, a pleasure to see and learn something new. Many thanks
I noticed you mentioned the meta data is to be placed at time of import. Can this be done after the fact? NEWBY

So, Import option doesn't physically import the images, right?
Deleting an image from catalog, also removes the file from my storage?
That helped a lot! Thanks!

Hello what if the date on the camera was wrong when shot and you want to add them to a folder that is the right date
Love Phlearn. I show your videos to my students but for some reason now there is no sound when I share to my class TV. Can you help?
