As a Scotland fan he was the opposition player you loved to hate, but as he's moved through the rest of his career I just have so much respect for him. One of the best commentators by far but shafted by the BBC for speaking the truth too clearly. As others have said his autobiography is one of the best and his other writing is also extremely insightful. He does himself a disservice here by saying he's not erudite - he's actually one of the very best with words.
As a victim of physical abuse as a child I understand Brian’s desire to prove himself and cope with low self esteem which still blights me in my late 60s. Having played rugby for nearly 20 years ( not to any great standard) I recognise its importance in helping to express what could not otherwise be expressed. When Brian commentated I understood where every word was coming from and he (mostly alongside Eddie Butler) described the intricacies of physical engagement as no other has done. Huge respect.
Irish fan here, but I absolutely love Brian Moore!! Hard as nails, so humble and down to earth! Says it like it is and man do I love his commentary!!!😂😂😂 he's brilliant!!❤❤🙌🙌
As a Scots Man I would say he is 1 of my Favourite English players all gave 100% so total respect for speaking up obviously backed him when he put on a Lions shirt. Top man.👏👏🏉👍
As a Welsh rugby fan, always had huge respect for Brian, as a player and a person, in later years loved his commentary a long side Johnathan Davies and the late great Eddie Butler and there was no bias he said it as it is, brilliant.
I kinda caught the backend of Brian’s playing career but knew he was a hell of a competitor. Growing up I’ve enjoyed his commentary and miss it nowadays as I feel he bought his no nonsense honest and frank approach to it, it had you hanging on every word as you knew it made sense and was coming from someone you respected. Enjoyed listening to this
Wow really enjoyed that. A great Rugby man to be admired and respected. A horrific start to his life which he overcame and an example to us all. Loved his not articulate enough to say how he felt about putting on his England shirt and then not being able to put on that shirt. That conveyed to me how you felt didn’t need no more words . Cheers Brian . 🏴
A real warrior in very good English side that won 3 grand slams which its not easy to win England may have won the world cup but for me this was great era for English rugby 🏉🌹🏴🧐
Fearless player and takes some bravery to share this story, well done Brian Moore. Loved watching you play for England and wish I could have seen you at The Stoop and Richmond.
I had the huge pleasure of meeting Brian in Argentière a couple of years, when he was writing for the Times (?) and watching the 6 Nations. He was reserved, but very polite and put up with us whooping and hollering as we watched games. Massive respect for him as a player and a human being.
As a Scotland fan and former Hooker Brian was always in my opinion one of the best to pull on the number 2 shirt. As a pundit he always called as it was and the majority of times I agreed with him. I do miss him and Eddie on Six Nations games.
Top bloke Brian Moore, I played with him a few times at Quins before he retired. He surprised me when I first trained with him just how good his hands were... His reputation was that of a blunt instrument but he was so much more... didn't really get the credit for his game around the pitch.
Hooker is one of the most difficult positions too play, you are a front row forward and do the nitty gritty, you're also expected to be a rugby footballer with all the skills that requires, throwing in at the line out. Brian, you were one of the best, thankyou.
My goodness, it all makes sense now. I am of a similar character in terms of being chaotic and making bad decisions at times. I did great in rugby as I could take out how I was feeling from being abused, in a controlled manner. Ironically as well, this was Liverpool, a world renowned football city.
As a Scot, I ‘hated’ Brian Moore as a player - simply because he was so good at what he did. But I have immensely enjoyed his commentary which comes with the insight only a top level player could bring. I will add his book to my Christmas wish list ! Huge resect and gratitude.
Loved mooro ....great player .....and had such a great ability to get under the skin of the opposition. . . Could upset the Scots Welsh and French with consumat ease.... .QUALITY TRAIT
Brian watched, supported you and that team , loved every time you played France they hated you 👍you would have got the mud slap and muddy fingers up your nose if I had played against you 😆😆 front 5 brotherhood , well played mate 👍
Greater player and a deep thinker. Not an oxymoron with respect to the members of the front row where immediacy of action / contact seems to be pivotal. Stay well Mr Moore.
i used to stand on the touchline at harlequins in the 90s. Brian moore along with micky skinner and peter winterbottom were a match for anyone in world rugby
A bit of a ‘maw’s’ comment Brian, but you didn’t beat Scotland on your first cap at Twickenham in ‘89, it was a 12-12 draw, & yes I’m a Scot & you’re a good bloke!
I miss Brian and Eddie Butler arguing like an old married couple about, eg, whether or not something was offside, or worthy of a penalty, or Brian reminding Eddie that the game is governed laws, not rules! I also remember him saying during the early stages of an England v South Africa game at Twickenham, when Robbie Fleck was running around with a red haze and thumping people late, that "somebody is going to have to stick one on Robbie Fleck before somebody gets seriously hurt". Those who haven't played in a game in which an inadequate referee doesn't keep discipline, so your team's "enforcer" has to do it for him, will probably not understand that comment and have viewed it as confirmation that the game is simply violent. This is not true. Obviously it sometimes is violent, but there are occasions when you simply have to take the law into your own hands. As a fly-half, it was never me, of course!!!....
I was physically abused by my father. Nasty stuff. Stays with you. Affects self-esteem. Left home joined the army. They taught me that nobody will ever touch you again without paying a heavy price. Self-esteem remained an issue but what the army gave me is self-confidence. They’re not the same.
He was an idol to me in my formative years of playing rugby, and i probably copied his 💩housery a bit too closely 🤣 often ending in an interlude in the game so everyone could straighten their ties ready to start playing again after a punch up 😂
Shit! Shit - I had no idea Brian had been abused in childhood, how awful! All the more credit to him - always thought he was a great man, great player, great commentator but most of all a great man! I can’t believe it... that’s knocked me sideways I must say! Blimey... hope they got the bastard!
Massive respect for this guy. His autobiography was incredibly moving, loved his commentary with Eddie Butler, and his advocacy for women’s rugby.
Always been a fan of Brian Moore. Huge respect for telling your story mate. Im sure it will resonate with people all over

He's a superb commentator isn't he, very decent man. A man to admire. Much love to our Irish friends in this great game of ours.
@iain075 one of the best man!!👌👌 appreciate the last part part of this comment too brother!!❤❤🙏🙏🇮🇪🇮🇪🤝🤝
As a Scots Man I would say he is 1 of my Favourite English players all gave 100% so total respect for speaking up obviously backed him when he put on a Lions shirt. Top man.👏👏🏉👍
An absolute rugby legend, in my opinion, and well done for telling your story, I know how hard that can be
Huge respect for your honesty, your commitment to English rugby, and your bravery

I was at a Rugby dinner and Scotland and British lion Finlay Calder, couldn't praise this guy enough. Said he was very committed and tough.
Always rated Brian and his knowledge of rugby is incredible . As a Scotland fan I remember his debut at Murrayfield . Great guy .
A great guy and player. I used to love his commentary with Eddie Butler

A true legend
Absolute legend of English rugby. 💪💪💪
Thank you for this. Perhaps it could have had his thoughts when faced with the All Blacks and the Springboks. His honesty is noble.
As a Scotland fan and former Hooker Brian was always in my opinion one of the best to pull on the number 2 shirt. As a pundit he always called as it was and the majority of times I agreed with him. I do miss him and Eddie on Six Nations games.
Mass Respect 2 Brian ❤ Him when I played.Real Humble Hard Hard Man 🙏
Pure rugby legend on and off the pitch ❤

I’m Welsh but I always loved this fella great player
GOD DAMN LEGEND 🏴💪
Great player and the guy I looked up to when I played as I was a hooker too. Very smart man, I wish he was still commentating on men's rugby still.
Hooker is one of the most difficult positions too play, you are a front row forward and do the nitty gritty, you're also expected to be a rugby footballer with all the skills that requires, throwing in at the line out. Brian, you were one of the best, thankyou.

I’ve always admired this man. Nuff said.
Brilliant player.

When I think back to England union team in my childhood, his is the first face I see. Unrivalled passion, unbridled aggression.
Greater player and a deep thinker. Not an oxymoron with respect to the members of the front row where immediacy of action / contact seems to be pivotal. Stay well Mr Moore.

That wasn't his first cap at Twickenham that was two years previously when they beat Scotland 21 v 12 .
Brave guy in all senses.

The chapter on his abuse made me weep.

Brian if you see this we all love you mate! Get back on the tele :)
Top man.
English rugby is Brian Moore
He was an idol to me in my formative years of playing rugby, and i probably copied his 💩housery a bit too closely 🤣 often ending in an interlude in the game so everyone could straighten their ties ready to start playing again after a punch up 😂
Biggie legend Brian Moore

Rugby was such a great sport .sadly not anymore
Bit of a loony on the field? Surely some mistake 😅😅😅
Not articulate enough... Only someone as humble as him would thibk that. Miss the double act commentary with Eddie butler
poodle
Great competitor. Just wish he’d leave his political views at the door
Missed in commentary also eddie butler. Perfect.
Should still be commenting on games now him and Eddie butler were a class double act shame real men are being pushed out of these commentary jobs
Top man
