Making a Sigilum Dei Aemeth out of Wax [Esoteric Saturdays]

  • About a year ago, I decided to make a Sigilum Dei Aemeth out of wax. In this video I describe the process of trial-and-error that let to this more or less acceptable outcome so you don't have to go through the same process (or at least use it as a starting point).
    What I wish I'd known:
    1) Use a single-piece silicone cake-mold (25cm/ 9.5 inch)
    2) Ensure it is 100% IMPECCABLY CLEAN
    3) DO NOT use a bain-marie.
    4) You need about 700g (0.7kg / 1.5lbs) of virgin beeswax.
    5) Melt the wax in the oven for around 15 minutes (be sure not to burn it, or let it start smoking)
    6) Do not let even the tiniest drop of water come close to the molten wax
    7) After trying around 7 times, I can say that flipping the cooled, solidified wheel over to smooth out the top-side ripples DOESN'T WORK.
    8) Pop bubbles on the surface with the flame of a lighter when the wax is still liquid.
    9) The wheel will shrink a lot if it's cooling from fully liquid, and a little if it's only partially melted.
    10) Drawing the sigil really is the easy part.
    Bonus 11) from @Kingsley Ravenscroft in the comments section: using a 1 piece metal tin and leaving the melted wax to cool down slowly in the oven overnight, he got no ripples. One, or the other, or both of these differences may be the magic ingredient... I'd bet on the slow cooling.

    What a piece of art! As a novice beekeeper myself, i wanted to note that the bees wax tends to crack when it cools too fast. To minimize that, one could let the wax cool in a warm room (around 25-30 degrees Celsius) or in a warm oven with the door closed (warm it to 200F and just leave the wax in the oven to cool very slowly). I’m wondering if it would also help with the wrinkling on the surface…. Thanks to your vidéo, I may actually try to make one myself next beekeeping season!

      For sure! I'm far from satisfied with the details of the outcome, but those niggles are completely overshadowed by the absolute delight of having completed a real Sigilum that I can hold, and, dare I say it, use! :D

      @@FoolishFishBooks yes! Some practitioners are ridiculously dogmatic in the construction of the Enochian materials, and if we were trying to actually receive the SYSTEM like Dee and Kelly did, I would understand replicating their materials exactly. But to use and have mystical experiences, I think Duquette's recommendation are totally adequate. I never found a red silk cloth with golden tassels personally 😉

    Using a fine liner pen for me was a NIGHTMARE because the tip got clogged with wax every few strokes. I highly recommend instead making a wash of black acrilic paint (a tiny bit of black paint in a shotglass full of water) painting it over the whole surface and quickly wiping it clean. The ink wash falls in the recessed marks/letters and the rest is pure beeswax. Thank you for this video!

    Great job, Mr. “Fish”! Before I have made my Golden Dawn style earth Pentacle (out of solid wood), I first made a beeswax one (in Duquette style), using a process similar to the one you described here. I used an aluminum mold with a removable bottom and the result was similar to the disc you showed: I got some smooth and perfect surfaces and no solidified bubbles at all. Then I used a drawing compass needle to transfer the figure from the paper to the disc surface, and reinforced the grooves and crannies in the same way. Your idea of reinforcing glyphs and letters with a fine-tipped pen is very good: the final result is better than mine, I have to admit it.

    What an amazing job you did, I love it! I am a candle maker and yes no water near beeswax (in candles the water droplets will pop and crackle... learnt from my mistakes). Beeswax needs to be heated at a higher temperature than other wax and can also be a little bit more temperamental. It can cool down quickly in some parts then others and this can cause bubbles and imperfections. I use a heating gun to get smoother areas in my candles and it can be a little frustrating as a perfectionist. I love the look of your Sigilum Dei Aemeth, it is rustic and real life looking those little imperfections make it more perfect. For transferring the Sigil you can use transfer papers and decals especially made for candle use but they can be a bit difficult so you did an amazing job, I am not sure I would have the same level of patience. I am curious did you use refined beeswax or unrefined? Unrefined beeswax does have flaws into the wax as it hasn't been cleaned (unlike refined beeswax) but it is the type that smells like honey and smells amazing.

So, while I probably cannot tell you anything you would't know on the esoteric side, I thought I'd seize the occasion to share something on wax-working which I hope might prove useful for your next sigil: go for a hear gun or even a simple hair dryer! They both melt the beeswax quite easily, and not having to work with a direct flame makes the smoothing work a lot easier :) cheers!

    I think the ideal way to dry it would be in a pressure pot, the sort that people use to set their resin casts, but most people don't own them, and they are rather expensive. But if you know someone who uses a pressure pot, perhaps you can ask to use it. Very tricky work. I've never made one of these, but I used to make a lot of candles as gifts for friends and family, and I discovered very quickly how difficult it is to make certain types of aesthetically pristine, ornate candles without pocks, bubbles, or imperfections.

    Is it required that the disk has to be constructed from wax exclusively as opposed to wood, perhaps? If so, what is the significance of it being of wax composite? I understand the value of putting the time, meditation, intention, & well, sheer effort into that which you create, but I would postulate that if hypothetically you invested the same energy into another medium one may yield similar results purely based on the intention invested in it. Forgive me if I'm missing something here, this is really just a general question of mine. Thanks for any insights, & otherwise great job on yours!!! Looks fantastic!

    An object I'm working on is an Illuminated Kabbalah Grimoire. After seeing this, I definitely want to add these in as pages. I'm also needing to research the 2 types of Enochian and align those with the Hebrew letter(by sounds, and by meaning/representation, separately) so I can add some angelic flair to it.
    The big inspiration for this is to replace the Grimoire I burned years ago. See, I used to have a demonic entity possess me, and through their teaching I practiced a dark magick. As I'm learning about Kabbalah, it's looking more and more like the demon's magick was a cheap knockoff. That being said, the channels should still work if used in a divine way and powered by the Priesthood. (I'm an elder of the Church of Jesus Christ and Latter-Day Saints) so I'm working on a Grimoire to go along with my Book of Lights.

    Now, take the cost of materials and any equipment purchased for this. Multiply the number of hours of labor you put in over the one year by the average value of your labor. Add that all up. The ones on Etsy suddenly look a lot less expensive...lol. To make this more painful, compare the quality. This is why I use Etsy.

    When I made my SDA last year, I found the inking of the characters to be the hardest part as ink and wax don’t like each other very much. Please can you tell me exactly what you used for the inking!

    • @FoolishFishBooks
      @FoolishFishBooks  4 года назад +3

      A couple of Sakura Micron 3 pens on the top (pens keep drying up and get coated in wax, so had to keep cleaning the tips and teasing out ink on paper) and a Sakura Pigma Graphic 1 fine marker on the AGLA underneath which didn't need to be so fine.

      I used a solid metal tin and didn’t have issues with the rippling that you found - not sure why... maybe the metal cools more evenly? I also just turned off the oven and left in there to cool overnight so it set really slowly.

      I believe buying this would be just as effective. John Dee's was wax. The one it was based on from the Liber Juratus was made of wood. But I'd say that making changes is something to be experimented with, but that may not yield the results you wanted.

    I'm working on one (at least) of these at the moment. I have used a brand new cake tin and let it cool from the oven. Do you think the wax is more likely to crack after multiple melts? Also, what did you use for ink? Thanks so much for this video!

    • @FoolishFishBooks
      @FoolishFishBooks  3 года назад +1

      I used Sakura fineliners for the ink (several which I ruined in the process), and I think the best thing to do to avoid cracks is to leave it in the oven as the oven cools down overnight.

    • @FoolishFishBooks
      @FoolishFishBooks  3 года назад +1

      No. The instructions from John Dee specifically require virgin wax.
      The main thing I would do differently is that I would leave it in the oven as the oven cools down (slower cooling process would avoid cracks).

    • @FoolishFishBooks

      I'm almost 100% sure that if wood works and even foam board I've heard work, then anything would work. These are simply the materials used by John Dee and Edward Kelly to receive the system. It's just traditional more than anything else.
