They were so close to retaining the cup as well. Should they have won the penalty shootout against Arsenal they would only have had to overcome Hull in the final.

Beating Manchester City - again - at the Etihad in the quarter-final as well, as a Championship club! If they'd retained it, I think it would arguably have been an even greater and unlikelier achievement than Leicester winning the Premier League.
@@char6364 Hmm I wouldn't go that far. FA Cup is easier game by game than the 38 games you have to do well in the prem, against consistently better teams also.

Perhaps, but I think you could certainly make the argument.
The only relegated team to win the FA Cup in 150 years and the only team to finish outside the top-half of the Premier League and win the FA Cup other than Everton since 1980. Although Everton finished only three points outside the top 10 when they won it in 1995, then were three points off the top-four the following season so arguably they finished in a false position.
Couple that with (had they won it again) becoming the first team to win a major trophy outside the top tier since West Ham, again in 1980, and you have a massive, combined statistical anomaly that, in my opinion, at least contends with Leicester winning the Premier League with the 11th or 12th largest budget in the division.
One of the most beautiful football stories I saw bar Leicester, truly wonderful....i remember this glorious FA cup and Wigan relegation escapes so well, truly a great club that doesn't give up

They were 8 pts behind 17th in 11/12 with Liv, Arsenal to play away and Chelsea and Unites home, in 10/11 they were trailing wham 2-0 and won 3-2 and surviving winning away at stoke at the last day 1-0
Being a Wigan fan, I hated being in the FA cup since we always got embarrassed by lower division clubs since we never put a strong team out. That year we played Bournemouth in the first game when they were in league 1, they smashed us and we scabbed a draw at home, just narrowly got a win in the replay. Martinez got criticised for not respecting the FA cup in the papers and on sky sports. From that first game I couldn’t believe we won it, you’d never dream it judging from that first game. Loved the FA cup ever since.
@@mast3rchief536 Especially next year when again Wigan were Penalties won away to reach a final again, after that beating centurion city side and reaching Quarters in 2018 but sadly got beat by Southampton, truly amazing FA cup runs by Wigans
@@ballabol2019 yeah they smashed it that year, league 1 and we beat 3 pl teams including Man City. Played amazing against Southampton but got so unlucky.
Callum McManaman was unreal that season!
I remember the comparison of the worth in total of the players of the opposing teams. Something like hundreds of millions (City) versus tens of millions (Wigan). McManaman's pace had me in awe. Absolute scenes as a Wigan supporter

I met wigan through PES and nowadays I follow the club on social media so it's always on the inside, it's really cool to know that they managed to defeat the great Manchester city and make Wembley Trembling with the goal. Hugs from Brazil to England and to wigan fans🇧🇷🇬🇧

As a Macclesfield fan, I’m glad we at least went out to the winners and got the to the 4th round for the first time ever, well done to Wigan though a massive fa cup story

They were always punching above their weight, them winning the FA Cup versus one of the greatest squads in footballing history is a near miracle.

I've come here to mark almost 10 years since Wigan Athletic won the FA Cup in an epic Cinderella story. What a history that should be remembered by all football lovers in England and in the world. Perhaps, Wigan Athletic is the only team in England who won the FA Cup and were relegated from the Premier League in the same season (2012-13) After that, it didn't happen again, until now.
When they came to Goodison they was outstanding. Annoying because that’s probably the best chance we had to win a trophy since 1995 but fair play to Wigan they deserved it.

Fa cup hasn’t have many underdog winners like this in the last 20 years. They relegated that season aswel. And never came back to the PL since. What a story and probably the best relegation season any club had.

Why a drill beat?
One of my pet peeves in football is when a player scores a winner, or just an important goal in a final, and he goes to celebrate HIS goal just to have his teammates pulling his shirt stopping him from running. Let the man have his moment
It's a team game. He doesn't want to celebrate alone... he runs off to the fans as well. I was at the game, and I was getting kissed left, right and centre by random fans. We were celebrating it as a team as well lad.
