    Quick question for You. What’s the difference between Air Crete and Shot Crete that Monolithic Dome Institute in Italy, Texas uses in their Domes????

  • @charlesquick3091
    @charlesquick3091 Год назад

    So I have a question.
    From the looks of your pictures it looks like you have to buy lumber, plywood, metal pipe, wire mesh, the material to mix the aircreete, etc.
    My question is is anything recycled materials or is it all new materials?
    The earth ships use a lot of recycled waste, seem more climate stable with thermal mass, etc.
    Now I will admit that aircreete looks more stable and suitable in a tropical environment if a person does not want a earth ship style home or even a traditional house...
    Respectfully.

    • @TheOffGridGuru
      @TheOffGridGuru  Год назад

      Good question Charles, when it comes to the sourcing of recycled/local materials, I would say that is very dependent on the project manager. Regardless of earthship or aircrete dome, the very act of sourcing materials takes time and storage space. Additionally, re-using materials often means more labor is involved. Therefore one must measure wether they have the time/space/labor to use such materials...
      Because aircrete domes only represent the shell of a structure and not the entire systems package, it's not fair to compare them to earthships. Once plumbing and electrical systems are introduced, it becomes more difficult ( and risky ) to use "found"/ recycled materials. Except for may old solar panels and batteries to get you going.
      Overall, Domegaia does not address systems the way Earthship Biotecture does. The ideal design of a structure should take into account the local climate, material availability, labor availability and so on... Hope that helps!

    • @charlesquick3091
      @charlesquick3091 Год назад

      @@TheOffGridGuru yes it does.... Like I stated I am just curious... The aircreete system to me looks like it would be great in a tropical climate... It would do great against the monsoons and hurricanes... I guess I have to admit that I am for recycling as much as we can and having to manufacture all new materials is probably faster, and maybe even easier, just not as earth friendly..
      With that being said you have given me lots to think about... Thank you.

    Is it weird to imagine pouring this aircrete into tires? I have never built an "earthship" or mixed aircrete or concrete for that matter so I have no idea what I am talking about. I'm just feeling like the process of filling the tires with dirt seems so needlessly labor intensive when the object seems to be "build with recycled materials". Couldn't you make a concrete or aircrete like mixture out of recycled or repurposed things and then wrap the tire in an envelope of recycled plastic and then fill it with the mixture? I mean, the end goal is heat retention with those walls right? It just seems like the dirt part is counterintuitive and introduces an organism filled, non recycled element to the process. Maybe that's just me.

    • @TheOffGridGuru
      @TheOffGridGuru  2 года назад

      We are not filling tires with aircrete.

    • @AaronSteinPittsburgh
      @AaronSteinPittsburgh 2 года назад

      @@TheOffGridGuru it wouldn't need to be aircrete. What I am asking is, isn't there some other thing you could *pour* into a tire other than dirt which doesn't bring with it all the microorganisms that dirt includes.

    • @TheOffGridGuru
      @TheOffGridGuru  2 года назад

      @@AaronSteinPittsburgh thanks for clarifying. Often the first course of Tires are filled with gravel for drainage purposes and it is common to fill tires entirely with sand if that is whats available.

      This style in South florida would work great! In NY you would need a heating system of some kind for the winter.

  • @ChadRiden
    @ChadRiden 2 года назад

    for me, the selling point of earthship tire walls is the thermal mass and the passive solar working together to create the man-made-cave-like temperature controlled environment. with an aircrete dome, how does it fare in extreme temperatures? for example the taos, NM area: would an enclosed aircrete dome out on the mesa need heating and cooling systems? it seems to me like yes it's well insulated, but it's not going to perform like a bermed tire wall would. am I correct?

    • @TheOffGridGuru
      @TheOffGridGuru  2 года назад

      Great observation chad, you are correct. It will not perform like a buried tire wall no. The round shape of the room will also create different convection patterns inside. An enclosed dome on the mesa would need a heating system but most likely not cooling, as it is mostly shaded inside (unless the design is hybridized for passive solar.)

    • @ChadRiden
      @ChadRiden 2 года назад

      @@TheOffGridGuru I would be interested in seeing such a passive solar hybridization. I've got land in unit 4 and will begin building in June. my initial thought was to start with an Earthship Hut and add styrofoam-aircrete domes and archways as needed to connect additional spaces. I'm now considering using super adobe earthbags to make the hut so it requires less taxing labor, but performs in a similar way when temperatures rise and fall. what do you think?

    • @TheOffGridGuru
      @TheOffGridGuru  2 года назад

      @@ChadRiden I would insulate the outside of the superadobe walls with aircrete and make the roof out of aircrete. The way you are thinking, you should watch my interviews with Alosha: ruclips.net/p/PLqp-SkZkzk5ywreFD3WZPjUZnZGES26p1

    can you do a aircreate dome in the same way thats done in the survival earthship?

    • @TheOffGridGuru
      @TheOffGridGuru  2 года назад +1

      I like your thinking, Yes you can replace the vault material with aircrete. but Im unsure about burying an aircrete vault the way they do to the ferrocement vault in the survival Earthship. I haven’t seen it tested yet…

    • @ronaldsahn9649
      @ronaldsahn9649 2 года назад

      @@TheOffGridGuru
      Maybe it doesn't have to be buried, it could be light enough to be put on in layers then coated, my understanding air create is good thermal mass and insulated, do a small earthship structure and if you need a little extra heat heat a small rocket mass heater, I also was thinking about using air create as a mass heater with solar hot water tubes going through hooked up to a solar hot water panel, the hot water heats your tank first then through the mass bench.

    • @TheOffGridGuru
      @TheOffGridGuru  2 года назад

      Certainly doesn’t need to buried if its only the roof that is aircrete. However if you are looking to replicate the passive performance of the simple survival you would need to incorporate mass into the walls.@@ronaldsahn9649 Aircrete is only insulation not mass. Any thermal mass coming from an aircrete construction would be in the form of an added layer of plaster or brick over the aircrete.
