Magical Trees in Polymer Clay Tutorial

  • These little trees are such fun to make, and the magic? Well, that would be the colour changing lights inside! So, sit back, relax, and watch as I take you step by step through the process. Then have some fun and make your own 😊 NB: Never use a naked flame next to Polymer Clay, only battery tea lights, that is very important!!
The music from the video is English Country Garden by Aaron Kenny and Waterfall by Aakash Gandhi, both available from the RUclips Free Audio Library.
If you like my work, then please do have a look at my website, www.fionaabel-s... and follow me on Facebook / fiona.abelsmith and Instagram. / fionaabelsmith.artist
I also have a number of Polymer Clay Tutorials to buy, both in my Etsy shop, PolyOriginals - www.etsy.com/u... where I have more tutorials in a PDF format, and as a video tutorial here - polyoriginals.t...
To find out how to condition polymer clay, here is a link - • Conditioning Polymer C...
Here is the link to creating Skinner Blends - • Basic Skinner Blend Tu...
The Staggered Stencil Sets should be available from Polymer Clay UK’s Etsy store - www.etsy.com/u... Although the store is having a short break at the moment. In the meantime, and until they are back, the largest circle I use is approx. 7.75 inches (20cm) diameter on its outer edge, the next size down is approx. 7 inches (18cm) on its outer edge, so you can draw some yourselves.
I got the battery operated colour changing Tea Lights from Amazon, but I am sure they are available from stores all over the place, so just hunt down the best offer. Search under ‘Battery Operated Tea Lights Multi Coloured’. Remember - only battery ones, not real flames!
    The circle sizes I use are approx. - 7.75, 7 and 6.5 inches (20, 18, 16 cm) in diameter.
The tree colours are, going from left to right: 1. Green (Emerald Green, Tropical Green, Peppermint and Aqua.) 2. Blue - (Windsor Blue, Pacific Blue, Peppermint and Aqua.) 3. Sage Green - (Emerald Green, Tropical Green, Gold and White.) 4. Purple - (Plum, Raspberry, Lilac, and Rose.) 5. Dark Blue - (Brilliant Blue, Emerald Green, Mint and White.) 6. Red - (Cherry Red, Indian Red, Gold and White.)
When I condition the clay using my pasta machine, I use setting 3, I do the Skinner Blend through setting 2, the very thin sheet for the translucent clay is put through setting 8.
If you do not have a pasta machine you can roll the sheet of clay between two even stacks of playing cards. Setting 8 on my machine is 1 playing card thickness, setting 3 is 5 cards and setting 2 is 6 cards thickness.
Thank you so much for watching.

I love your art. I have a technique to share that I learned from a friend. The big bake-in bags made for roasting turkeys are great for curing polymer clay in ovens. I can get a pack of three at the Dollar Tree and they usually last me three uses each. I don't have to use a tile for most pieces, but I put my pieces on parchment paper and slide them into a bag, securing it closed. I put the whole shebang on a cookie sheet. The heat of the oven causes the bag to "tent," which is quite handy. I leave the pieces inside the bag to cool completely, which means the toxicity remains on the inside of the bag. I think the shield you made for your trees would fit inside a turkey bag. Also, the parchment paper prevents a shiny finish on the back of my pieces. Let me know what you think.

    • @FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals
      @FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals  Год назад

Thanks so much - I think that's genius !! You need to spread that far and wide😉 I must admit to making this little one for the trees as I have a very big one - bigger I expect than the bake-in-bags for when I do my large sculptural pieces - so I thought I would scale it down for others to see. But your idea is wonderful, thanks so much for sharing it 🙂

Hey there Fiona, just wanted to pop in & leave a comment for the algorithm since i've not watched any of your videos for quite a while. The past 2 years have been extremely difficult & i've had no inclination to create anything. Among other things, i was evicted (not my fault), & in the process, lost various belongings which included all my craft supplies & equipment. Am not in a financial position to replace any of it & won't be for quite a while longer. So, watching craft videos only induced depression & feelings of frustration. Out of the blue, this one appeared in my recommendations, so i thought i'd give it a go & am glad i did. I truly love all aspects of your presentations & this one was true to form, most excellent. Your soothing voice got me through it & left me only slightly sad that i'll be unable to do any crafting for a while. Thanks muchly for sharing your incredible creations through such lovely tutorials.

Those are really beautiful but there is a lot of process there. I just started my polymer clay adventure so I might try this next year.

It is always good fun when you are at the beginning of your polymer journey, so absolutley, do them as soon as you feel you are at that point. Have fun when you do. 🙂
