Building 1,018 lb Wagon Wheel For a Chandelier | Engels Coach Shop

- This 1,018 pound wagon wheel will be turned into a chandelier. This is the final building process, including hot setting a 553 pound steel tire in an open fire. This wheel is made using a red oak hub and ash for the spokes and felloes. The Borax rear wheels weighed 1,080 pounds, but used a white oak hub and red oak spokes and felloes. The overall dimensions however are the same. The steel tire is 1" inch thick and 8" wide.

Many of you are interested in the tire bolts and rivets I use in my videos. Since I use a large number of these, I do keep them in stock. An email to dave@engelscoachshop.com will get you a list of available sizes and pricing.
In response to a number of requests for the tools and supplies I use here in the shop, I have compiled a list as an Amazon Associate. I have used Makita tools for almost 40 years, but am not sponsored by, nor endorsed by Makita. Perhaps this list will be of service to you as viewers, as well as provide a means to help support this channel.
These are not cheap, home improvement tools. I use tools hard so I use high quality tools. These prove to be less expensive in the long run.

Undoubtedly, but, definitely, I’ve enjoyed every second watching & learning , while , the Master Craftsman is in hi-performance.
Very hard worker God bless you my dear uncle
Nice work greetings from Russia
This kind of classic craftsmanship is very rare these days . Thanks
Always a joy to watch a skilled craftsman do this sort of specialized work.
Blessed with talent, patience, know-how, humility and equipment. I envy Dave's personality traits.
What I specifically admired about you in building this wagon wheel is the fact that even though you knew it would never be used as an actual wagon wheel, you built it to the highest standards that you would had it been going on a heavy wagon. That sir, is was a true craftsman would do. I am in awe of your skills, and at 73 years of age I'm still learning all the time. Thank you for a fabulous video.
I wondered if knowing this would never be used on a wagon was depressing for him or does the pride knowing they *could* be used override that feeling?
maggs13
Durnik is proud of him!
@Telleva You have no idea what you are talking about. The large metal tire was heated so that it would contract tightly around the wheel and keep it tight.
@Telleva the wood chips are used to hold the wooden wheel sections in alignment during assembly and to hold it all together in one piece before the metal wheel is installed. No glues or adhesives are ever used. Just friction and the principles of expansion and contraction.
The most interesting man in the world does not drink Dos Equis he makes hand crafted Wagon Wheels.
Thank you sir.
WELL SAID !!!! And nothing I can add ...
Nope, makes complete wagons. And, does a damn good job!
steve
I don't always click on to wagon wheel videos, but when I do....
This gentleman is a true craftsman
Yes he is a great life in shops with old sķils men and women at all the world .

Just "WOW " America needs you now....And we don't even have minimal trade schools any longer....Where did we fail as a nation?....I'm going to watch this again....and again...and again !!
A true craftman, havent seen this done for over 60 years. my compliments, admiration and thanks.
I time I watch one of your videos, I am in awe and amazed at the work you do. You are truly an inspiration to us all, thank you as always for the great videos
**BEAUTIFUL+++ WHEELS!!!**
OLD SCHOOL TOOLS! WHAT A GREAT JOB! TEAM WORK MAKES THE DREAM WORK.....
I have been a woodworker for a large part of my life, mostly antique furniture, cabinets, and carpentry. My hat's off to you. Super awesome craftsmanship.
You are an amazing craftsman, my daddy who is 84 years old still working as a blacksmith, and he is a great craftsman too! Keep up and stay healthy!
Beautiful ancient artform. Wonderful indeed!
I love watching the machining of the spokes for the fellas!
It’s amazing to watch: no wasted effort or motion, just pure skill and gorgeous craftsmanship. I hope you have some journeymen learning from you, because it would be a pity to lose your level of experience. It deserves to be passed on. Thanks so much for the gift of watching you work!
There is somethng immensely and indefinably satisfying to see when slots finally fit together, another job well executed. Thanks for bringing us along.

This true wood work. Thanks for making beautiful video.
What amazing work... wood, fire, steel, sweat. This has been so satisfying to watch!
I just watched the Woodwright's Shop episode where he makes a small wheel for a wheelbarrow and he said that you shouldn't think of yourself as a wheelwright after making such a small wheel. After seeing the complexity of a much larger wheel I understand what he meant. Great content!
I was a Wheelwright Apprentice back in the 70’s, we didn’t build anything near this large. I sure wish we had. Beautiful work Sir.
You are a real master. I admire you!
Sir....As it is Good Friday, I'll just say " God Bless You...your hands...and your genius head!!!
I feel truly blessed to watch you & the amazing craft you have kept alive.. God bless...
Ditto!
Every time this old carpenter looks at one of your videos I'm more amazed by your wonderful jigs and exceptional skill, hats off.👍👍
enjoy always no mater how often i watch him
Amazing. I’m a glass man by trade. This video was pure greatness 👍👍
This is by far the best video I have ever seen on RUclips. This guy is a genius, turning out a work of art, singlehanded I had a friend who passed recently who made wheels like this, although smaller. I loved helping him put the tires on the woodwork. Congratulations to the camera person, for giving a precise view of the work as it progressed.
A work of art! I have worked with my hands all my life and can appreciate your efficiency of motion. Functional art!
I do hope you are teaching these skills to others. Just wow, I’m so glad there are still craftsmen alive and well. You are incredible!
I just discovered your channel. You and your skills are a treasure. The way you take the time to clock all the nuts so they orient the same. That level of detail is rarely seen.
Absolutely inspirational!!!! As a blacksmith I’m thinking of how they calculated for the forge weld laps…… 😳🤯
The Master Craftsman demonstrated the basic, essential ingredients to achieve perfection in any job. Thanks
Really Interesting work 👍👍👍Super video Well done 👍👍👍Beautiful hand work 👍👍👍
Your love for vintage wagons reflect the ultimate beauty you bring to light. Keep up with your dreams !
A terrific exhibition of craftsmanship, precision, and plain old hard work. Thanks for the time and effort in making the video. An absolute joy to warch!
I'm in awe. I grew up down the street from a working blacksmith shop . Alec Campbell was his name. He passed in 1971 at about 78 years old, still ran the shop as a hobby till the very day his heart gave out on the walk home for lunch. Building and repairing wheels of all sorts was a major part of his work. I wish I had been a little bit older to fully appreciate his craft. Thanks for sharing sir.
A million likes for your workmanship....
Just have to give you a huge thumb up for the expertise you have in doing this work 👍 And although it is for a chandelier you have taken no shortcuts and it is equally suitable for a cart and that can carry many tons. I am now a great admirer of your craft..
I really hope that there is someone out there that is taking the time to learn your trade and the skills that you have gained over the years. It would be a crying shame if your skills left with your passing and were lost to time. What you have is a knowledge that a very few possess, and I pray that there is someone out there that is saving them by learning them from your and others that still have them.
A master wheeler. You make it look so easy.
I think Jimmy Diresta got me onto your work, and boy is it mesmerising just how efficient you have made the entire process. I really love the use of jigs to make light work of some of this, I am sure even before power tools similar jigs would have been in use. I can't wait to look back through your body of work.
Absolutely beautiful. Most take for granted what they see. They never get to see the work and love that went into creating something like this.
Beautiful work
Mr. Engels is a true craftsman!
I’m wondering since these were going to be decorative pieces, especially being hung overhead, why not make the tire out of aluminum? I know you like to be authentic but decorative verses functional could be done differently. I am new to watching this channel and Love watching your methodical methods.
There was never a wheel so tall that did not stand in the shadow of the man who fashioned it!
Your humblest admirer, Robert
With his wealth of knowledge, he sure is larger than life.
So true of words. How fitting.
gayest thing I have read in two years hahaha
@@ldlink3935 LOL
Another day in the shop, fun fun✌❤
I'm glad you drew that X on the piece of the steel tire you planned to cut off, or I'd never have been certain which side was good and which was waste material!
Kinda makes you wonder how the old boys did it back in the day
without power tools, Welders and such... I guess just good old
elbow grease, Ingenuity and common sense did the trick...
Hats off to them old boys and to you Mr. Dave.
Dave, and women were glad of it.
(Heard that on Jay Leno's car videos.)
steve
@@EngelsCoachShop That's right Mr. Dave...
Excellent craftsmanship, a talent most will never have.
You show off😜
Best looking wheels I ever saw!
Just think of the ingenuity that went into designing the tools to make that wheel. wow!
Beautiful work. My son and I loved watching you make these wheels
Hard work-no comment!!! Bravo...
A chandelier!!!!!!!! 😳 for who exactly Andre the Giant?
Absolutely stunning work!! 👊🏻👊🏻
Rewelacyjne wykonanie, ciężka ale piękna praca GRATULUJĘ !!!
I am envious of the skills this man has. This looks relaxing yet stressful. I like that you have been doing it so long that on your mind you have the marks and the cuts planned. Well done master woodworker and artisan.
I can’t believe what I’m seeing, awesome workmanship.
Totally magnificent work on that wheel
I've watched every one of your videos from beginning to end, and they still never fail to fascinate me.
Incredible craftmanship, I'm an Engineer but I really admire the work and skill that goes into these wheels, top quality.
Yeah
A Masterpiece of Work.
Thank's for the video.
Craftmanship lovely to see this !
All ready for: the Gunsmoke version of Phantom of the Opera.
Always fascinating to watch you work Dave. Your work, my pleasure.

Another beautiful job. Those were one hell of a set of wheels.
Awesomeness all I can say IS FANTASTIC
Marvellous awesome example of creative technology
Wow, you did an amazing job on that wheel. I love watching real craftsman at work. Thank you sir for filming this for us to enjoy.
this is so much of an art by its self
Very creative , wonderful and amazing skills...
Stay blessed.
With best wishes.

Vcs me fizeram feliz 💯
Simply astounding - At times during the running of the clip, I had to remember to breathe.
A real craftsman. I takes years to perfect his skills. Drills an 8 -10 inch hole , and it comes out perfect on the other side. Cuts a square edge with a skill saw - - -
I've done the wiring on hundreds of genuine and knock off wheels for Comb's Rustics here in Oklahoma. I actually took some of your techniques and built my own Chandelier out of pallet lumber. Using a torch to "antique" it and then putting metal rustic scenes on it. It came out pretty convincing. One thing I can tell you is when it sold for $1400, I haven't done it again! I don't know how many hours I actually spent on it.
Wow ! What craftsmanship. What a pleasure to be able to watch the video. Thank you so much.

Wow, I didn't know that wagon wheels was still a thing. Loved watching you create. Thank you

You are a true great craftsman. Thank you for the video.
A 1 thousand pound chandaleer. What every rich Californian moving to Montana needs hanging in their "Great Room" so their LA friends can see how successful the new Montana ranch life style has become. But I guess they provide jobs for old time wheelwrights now that oxen driven wagons are a thing of the past. Gotta love them durn California folks, inadvertently providing work for hardworking craftsmen and women in our state, where otherwise $$ would be scarse and natives would have to ranch and live on venison and canned garden produce to get through the winter months. Bring on more more rich folks from Commiefornia.
181k.
This is my first time that I saw how this kind of wheell is made. This was a great work. Congratulations. Iván Rodríguez from Costa Rica in Central América
It is an impressive job I really recognize the experience of this professional. My congratulations from Spain.
Absolutely beautiful!
Kind regards from Panama, I have learned a lot from your video, here in Panama, many years ago the peasants used wooden carts pulled by two oxen (domesticated bulls), which used wheels very similar to the one you make, only they were a Little more small and thin and honestly I had no idea how they were made, excellent video are you an artist ... hopefully the new generations learn and continue doing beautiful work ...
Simply stunning.
I can just imagine a house worthy of these as chandeliers.
