- Bible Basics with John Bergsma | July 2024
Where does the expression "the dog days of summer" come from? In this episode of Bible Basics, Dr. Bergsma explains the history of this common phrase, the roots of "ordinary time," the reason there are so many Marys in the New Testament, and the special connection between the month of July and the Gospel of John. Gentleman and ladies, start your Bibles!

Greetings from the Netherlands. I have been Catholic for three years now. I grew up as a Calvinist in the Bible Belt, in the Dutch Reformed Church (Reformed League). I found you because I am interested in Qumran and the Septuagint.
Thank you. Love bible basics, from 🇿🇦
And loving it also from another Southern Hemisphere nation, New Zealand ❤
God bless you. From Bonfim, RR, Brazil. 🇧🇷
Wonderful! Very good and memorable - entertaining too♥️Thank you dr. Bergsma♥️😊
“It’s not a liturgical feast day, no matter what your friends may tell you.”
I love Dr. Bergsma’s sense of humor.
Thanks Dr Bergsma for a very clear explanation.
Bergsma is a good one to listen to. His Pints with Aquinas episodes are good.
Love it - thanks, Dr. Bergsma!
I always enjoy John’s teachings. What a blessing for us all.
Another great Bible Basics! Thank you Dr. Bergsma!
Thank you!
Enjoyable teacher!
Greetings from Croatia! 🇭🇷 Dr.Bergsma, can you comment on Mark 3,21? "And when his friends heard it, they went out to seize him, for they said, “He is beside himself.”
God bless you!
Great teaching! As always 😊
Great thoughts for the month!!!
Had watched this for the 3rd time and noticed that you did not mention July 26 as feast of Sts Joachin and Anne, the parents of Mama Mary.
In Blessed Anne Catherine Emmerich's visions, they are two different persons. There is quite a lot said about them. Of course, the visions are not at all infallible teachings.
Been waiting for that course on St Mary Magdalene, but it's still not out 😢 when will it be out, St Paul Center?
It's out now! :)
July 26 St. Anne and St. Joachim mentions?
I can't find the course referenced in the video on Mary Magdalene. Any suggestions on how to find it? I went to the Saint Paul site and couldn't find it.
Hi Leon! Thanks for asking! It will be released on Emmaus Academy later in July; it is not published yet! God Bless!
@@StPaulCenter Amen. And thank you. That's what came up in my prayers this week.
I have always heard Mary was such a popular name in the Bible as Moses’ sister was Miriam and she was held dear by all Jews.
Not wife, sister surely or am I mistaken? 😊😊
@@susannestorm9705 You are NOT mistaken! Thank you for pointing out my error. I have corrected my comment. Brant Pitre has said Miriam was a very popular Jewish name due to the relationship to Moses
Yes I was always impressed by the story of her leprosy, she was also the sister of Around of course♥️😺
Sorry my mobile is reading me, should be Aaron😊
Oh please Dr Bergsma, would you get onto a Joeinblackministries show with Fr Joe Krupp. You two would be awesome together!!!
St. Philip’s feast day is in May not July.
That's an old joke but an easy way to remember the difference between those two sects of Judaism. I count seven Mary's: 1) Mary mother of Jesus; 2) Mary wife of Clopas; 3) Mary magdalene; 4) Mary of Bethany; 5) Mary mother of James and Joses; 6) Mary mother of John Mark; 7) Mary of Rome (Rm. 16:6).
Thomas was not the only apostle who doubted Jesus' Resurrection! The other 10 apostles did not believe until they themselves saw Jesus!
How do you explain to an eight year old that the Bible contains truths and facts and that Jesus is not make- believe, which he's being told by a lot of kids.
Hi Leon! I think that your example in their life and how you live and speak of Jesus can influence how they understand Him. If you live a life that shows and speaks of Jesus in a way in which it shows that you believe Him to be real, then kids will pick that up. As they grow up, you can further catechize them about Christ and the Bible. I also encourage you to listen to the episode of our podcast series, Drawing Flame, on the Eucharistic Pilgrimage with Kris Frank. I think they provide a lot of helpful suggestions for teaching kids about the faith around the one hour mark. Hope this helps!
very disappointed about why the name Miriam was so popular. I thought it was because of Moses wife.
