I wonder if they got permission? It's probably not that uncommon of a name, but, using it in a combat related story could possibly be copyright infringement. Too close to a Clancy style story for comfort.
CODA- Ratchet to just before the first cave mission. The Galactic Marines Commander pokes fun of Jack's knife. He says "so just what is a KA-BAR any way ? Big toothpick ?" Jack says "back on Earth in the 20th Century, a relative of mine was one of the first SEALS; he passed it down and here 500 years later, it is still drawing enemy blood in combat. The Marine Commander looks into Jacks eyes with a smirk. Jack says nothing, but the Marine Commander senses that Jack knows how to use the KA-BAR, and if he tried to even touch it, Jack would draw HIS blood. Now ratchet forward to the second cave op. Jack hangs back covering the Galactic Marines as they exit. DRAX an Honorable Soldier is the last one out as he covers his men's SIX. Jack's enhanced passive dark-vision HUD shows the blip of an enemy combatant charge his energy weapon and raise it towards DRAX. Instinctively and without hesitation, Jack swims between the enemy with his weapon at the ready and DRAX taking the hit. With his last/dying move Jack eliminates the enemy soldier with his KA-BAR. DRAX swims to Jack who is coughing up blood and seawater. DRAX looks at the dying Jack as he takes his hand, then gives him a salute. Jack's last living act is to pull his KA-BAR from the enemy soldier. With a tight bloody last smile, he hands the KA-BAR to DRAX hilt first then dies. In the aftermath of the operation, a quiet, contemplative DRAX approaches the office of his CO. In a low, humble, and measured voice, he says to his Commander, "in light of his actions. I strongly recommend that Jack Ryan be the first Human to be awarded the G.M.H. for actions above and beyond the call of duty. Furthermore, I respectfully suggest that we establish a GSEAL TRAINING ACADEMY, staffed with Human and the Galactic SEALS. COMMANDER DRAX is then tasked with hand picking and training these instructors. The ACADEMY is officially kmown as THE JACK RYAN ACADEMY FOR ADVANCED MILITARY TRAINING." During the first day of open water training for a fresh batch of recruits at the ACADEMY, COMMANDER DRAX is clad only in a 3/4 inch wet-suit with his KA-BAR leg strapped. His wet suit, devoid of technology shows patched signs of previous combat; energy blasts, bullet holes, and blade slashes. The only markings on the suit are the GSEAL Crest, and the English letters spelling out " RYAN". Rumors abound that in a few confrontations, upon learning that GSEALS are coming, enemy forces surrender unconditionally. As he rises for another day, Commander Drax muses to himself, "the dream; why now, why today ?"; as he wakes, his eyes fall on the dusty ten year old paper calendar on the wall of his otherwise 25th century barracks quarters. A tight, small smile spreads across his face as he realizss that ten years ago Jack Ryan saved his life at the cost of his own. He dons his Galactic SEALS dress uniform straping the ancient KA-BAR to his leg. With a strong, purposeful stride he nakes his way to the cold, grey mausoleum at the center of the Academy's grounds. With the eternal flickering, two GSEAL guards bearing ancient M1 GARAND battle rifles. The M1's are not relics of 20th Century Earth for show. They wear the marks of countless battles here in the 25th Century; their EN-BLOC magazines loaded with .30-06 M2 Ball Ammunition. The Guards stand to attention at his approach. He silently stands before the Guards who offer their M1's for the traditional white-gloved Rifle Inspection. After a nod of approval, he removes his Beret and with a sense of purpose enters the crypt. Kneeling, he unsheathes his KA-BAR, resting it at the foot of the solitary grave. Commander DRAX in a low voice reads the grave's inscription; "HERE LIES COMMANDER JACK RYAN US NAVY SEAL, THE SOLDIER'S SOLDIER; MAY HE CONTINUE TO WATCH DOWN ON US. THE ONLY EASY DAY WAS YESTERDAY". As Commander DRAX exits, a solitary FIRST BATTALION SCOTS GUARDS Piper sounds 343 Hymn to the Fallen, and FIRST CALL which is followed by a 21 GARAND Salute. Down at the ACADEMY'S waterfront a corporal whispers to the new Team's Leader, "He's late; what's wrong ?" Then he hears the sound of the Pipes and the GARAND Salute as it echoes across the ACADEMY. His responds, "OH !" and KNOWS that Commander DRAX will soon arrive. As Commander DRAX is looking out over the new group of recruits as he speaks "WELCOME to the first day of Hell Underwater". One of the rookies pipes up asking where their armor is. Looking at Commander DRAX, he is about to wisecrack about the ancient "TOOTHPICK" strapped to the Commander's leg. But the rookie's Team leader shoots him a stare that would freeze and boil water at the same time. This makes the rookie think better of it and not speak.
