    I loved this, thank you. I ordered two of the books you mentioned in the beginning. I visited a psychic (for fun) who said I was an important spartan woman in a previous lifetime. Now, I don't know about all that lol, but it got me interested in the history. And it's funny all the things you mention. I'm of Greek origin, I play the piano, I've raced several half marathons (this gave me motivation to sign up for another), I have a doctorate level degree in nurse anesthesia, and I always joke with my husband that I would like 2 husbands. It's weird! Great documentary, thank you so much. This lifted my spirits. The only thing missing was a martini for myself. Hahahaha.

    So this might’ve been something I heard but they say Spartan women carried a switch blade on them in case their husbands got abusive and the cuts and scars they would carry showed disgrace and I thought that was immaculate ✨✨

      Notice how we TODAY, are regressing back to Ancient Pagan, Sparta, ( and Ancient Pagan Athens in some ways) , rather than the one and a half thousand years later in the Greek Christian, Roman Empire, led by glittering Constantinople, which had progressed in countless ways in almost every aspect of life. They also created a governing system that helped them rule the longest running empire in world history….. so why are we regressing backwards?

    Do you know which famous Athenian said and is recorded saying "Only mothers should be midwives, as they know which infants are to be placed on the hill." Some in Athens thought it would inspire women to have perfect looking infants if they see and hear the infants placed on the hill suffer before they die. I do not know but maybe this is where the sacrifice on a hill came from.

    • @ThePacificWarChannel
      @ThePacificWarChannel  5 лет назад +2

      In Athens the father decided if the child would live or not. The "hill" could very well come from Athens. I'd like to add modern scholars believe the numbers were very low for infantcide in Sparta or other greek city states (Athens).

    There is significant evidence that Xenophon's "pro-spartan" writings used factual distortions (which in all honesty is simply Ancient Greek writing, they all did this). While reading his earliest pieces on Sparta towards the last, you notice his opinion changes rather dramatically, many have accused him of becoming disillusioned with Spartan customs. I would point out personally what I notice from his work, his praise or blames for individual traits and or collectivities. While its true Xenophon wrote that Spartan's found pederasty an "abomination" (I think this adds more to your homophobic claim) its widely argued that Sparta was the first to formalize pederasty.... (honestly scholars still bicker over this today and the issues of homosexuality). Simply put Spartan men were unique...they had to be with men in a barracks till they were 30...it goes without saying this increased the homosexual encounter rate significantly compared to other Greek city states.
    As for the shaving of the head, Plutarch wrote of this and as we know Roman customs crept into his writing. The importance of women hair in Roman rituals (veiling and unveiling rituals for widows) is relevant and makes him a questionable source. Your mention of "evil spirits" refers to the "evil eye". From the scholar Sarah B. Pomeroy "An abduction rather than a joyous spectacular wedding ceremony may serve to ward off the JEALOUS EVIL EYE. The shaving of the head and dressing of the bride as a man (Plutarch. Lyc. 15.8) may have been part of a rite of passage that signaled her entrance into a new life. As a maiden she wore her hair long and uncovered, as a wife wore it short, and covered by a veil. The bride's costume may have also helped to ease the husbands transition to procreative sex from the homosexual intercourse to which he was accustomed"

    • @Thullin00
      @Thullin00 5 лет назад +1

      Widespread homosexuality was simply not a thing especially not in sparta.
      This is a distortion of history made by people with political bias.
      Read Platos Symposium
      Homosexuality was very tabo in Greece and not accepted socially.

    • @ThePacificWarChannel
      @ThePacificWarChannel  5 лет назад +7

      @@Thullin00 Homosexuality and homosexual relations are two completely different things in Ancient Greece. One was expected to take a wife and have offspring regardless of what sexual actions they took during their life before marriage. Humorous to state someone with an agenda would distort such a subject, kind of how you did not disassociate homosexuality and homosexual relations in making your point ;). To further point out, Sparta was often mocked for its over tones in homosexuality, this weird idea that its "very much not a thing in Sparta" is absolutely unfounded. Don't worry, the Persians were just as homosexual as the rest.

    • @Thullin00
      @Thullin00 5 лет назад

      I meant homosexual relations i missworded it.
      Ofcourse it has taken place in every society to some extent but it was very very taboo and frowned upon in Sparta and though it was a while ago since i read a lot about Sparta i believe there were even severall Spartan kings that were forced to abdicate the throne because they were caught in homosexual activity.

    • @ThePacificWarChannel
      @ThePacificWarChannel  5 лет назад +2

      @@Thullin00 Now you see your not wrong, its just complicated. Sparta like most of Greece underwent changes during the ancient times (most significant is Rome's ascension as the Mediterranean power). Policy changed particularly as a result of overbearing Rome and yes homosexuality norms changed to. Even before then, homosexuality was "taboo", but its often misunderstood. The only way I can think to describe it is, having a actual relationship with between two men and two men had sex. It's almost as if homosexual sex was the same as masturbation honestly, was fine if it occurred, but don't forget to get a wife and have a heterosexual life. It was actually very appalling to outside people how the Greek's treated sex (Persians particularly saw it awkwardly). Even more, while you might notice I am only speaking about men, women was a whole other very very odd story. Search the island of Lesbos and laws of women having relations on women it gets a lot more confusing.

    • @Thullin00
      @Thullin00 5 лет назад +1

      I guess we just have two completely different views on how the situation was.
      In most of classical greece and in particular sparta from what i gather homosexual activity was very taboo and frowned down upon according to my interpretation of it and you differ in that you believe it was kind of a casual act that people didnt really care about.
      I suppose there are bits and pieces from text that could support your theory but i think that the evidence that points to my view on it is more overwhelming. Xenophon said that homosexual activity was not taking place in the agoge.

    Sexuality is not a choice and the girls cut their hair to keep evil spirits from attacking them on their wedding day. Please read Plutarch and Xenophon. Brasidas is one of my heroes and Kynisca and her racehorses is one of my favorite stories. I respect gay men, but really, straight men and women do exist and we don't need trickery to be attracted to each other. Two Spartan queens gave their lives supporting the return of land to the disenfranchised Spartans.They were murdered by Leonidas II for supporting the reforms of Agis IV.
    And evidence suggests that Gorgo's son and Spartan king was gay. He ruled for over twenty years and no one knows anything about him. The Spartans in spite of the modern belief that military men are all gay, the Spartans were terribly homophobic.
